Chapter 1 - Prologue: The Lake That Heeds your Call

Sounds of great calamities had struck. My hands—covered in blood—the sickening melody of war. I saw it… A dark sinister silhouette resembled a general of mayhem—her eyes landed on me, it felt darker than the abyss, her sword ready—to strike! My alarm clock made a rhythmic mechanical sound. I woke up. The first thing in the morning was braiding my long dark hair. It was a pretty unhealthy routine, but that was all I could do. It's not like my room was messy, I only clean it once a month, what even is there to clean.

"KIEL!!!"

I heard my mother call me for breakfast as usual, I sighed. Another day of hell. my face had contorted to a frown of disappointment. I walked downstairs, clothed up and ready to face the dangers of today; with eye bags that contrast my youthful appearance.

"Didn't I tell you to chop that braid off? It's the reason why you always get made fun of, it makes you look like some teenage girl."

She looked at me with extreme cooking fatigue. My breakfast was ready on the table, I looked at the bacon and eggs. I didn't really like eggs all that much because of the texture—I guess I can live with it. I knew she was right about my voluminous braid, but I loved it, it made me feel—myself? After I ate my breakfast, I trampled down outside, my braid was getting kind of heavy. When I finally got there I waited for the bus to school, I twiddled my thumbs fidgeting with my pen that I forgot to put in my bag. my legs shook as I waited for that yellow hunk of metal. I had heard the engine, it had finally arrived, I walked inside—the only relief I felt was the feeling of sitting on that dusty chair, accompanied by the dagger-like stares of disgust. My eyes set on the back. I knew it was saved for me. I sat down and just tried to distract myself with the scenery that was just beside me. It wasn't ugly it's just that the world looked so pale… devoid of any color I still smiled anyway, it kind of felt comforting to me that I wasn't the only lifeless entity in this sickening world. I sighed, ready for the day to end… I scrolled on my phone to pass the time 'the average lifespan of a person is about 80 years'. That's a pretty short time if you think about it, so why does it feel so long? I should be an old man by now.

It was the usual… I hung around the library after I got beaten up by jocks for lunch money like some stereotypical American high school movie… Finally the bell rang, I got up, leaving for home. I covered my bruises with the cheap bandages the nurses gave me, the sound of a light drizzle filled my ear, it was about to rain; I didn't care. I walked around the school. If I was going to get wet anyway, why should I avoid the rain? While I was walking around I saw something from the corner of my eye. It was the lake near our school. That huge sad puddle now emanated a strange aura, a luminescent glow that shone like a true diamond.

I walked outside in awe. I wanted to get a closer look. I ran as fast as I could, the moist grass underneath me had produced sounds that I'd heard when I went to shower in the rain when I was younger. I crouched down for a peek. I loved it, it gave me a bit of hope, it was such an interesting phenomena. I wanted to take a picture so I took out my phone and snuck a few shots. I was so drawn to the lake that I didn't see the land below me warping. Before I knew it, I was engulfed by this beautiful phenomenon… This wasn't such a bad way to die—right?

I could breathe? I was within a tunnel of light filled with eyes.

"How strange… is this where I'm destined to be till the end of time?"

I looked at the eyes one by one, who seemed to know exactly what I'm going through, looks of pity filled their faces. I felt a hand grab on my back. I was immediately dragged backwards, my vision blurred… every sense was melting away into oblivion.

"Mom… I'll return someday, this time… I'll listen to you… regret? I can't believe this is the last emotion I hold onto before I die…"
