Chapter 5 - Joy Turned to Sorrow

A small, handsome young man stood in front of a black lizard. To the lizard, he appeared to be about the same size.

He had enchanting black hair, and his sparkling black irises were striking. He also had a domineering presence, an untold aura.

"You're a guy?" the black lizard asked, its jaws opening wide like a pipe.

"Close your mouth, or flies will get in," the small, black-haired young man snickered.

The black lizard quickly shut its mouth in embarrassment before its expression turned frosty.

"How dare you trick your host? You've violated the law," Daniel complained.

He had assumed the system spirit was a lady. It turned out the system had played him—it was male.

"Which law?" the male system spirit rolled his eyes. "You need to go to a hospital; you must have some mental issues."

Daniel was instantly triggered. He lifted his lizard body and charged at the system spirit.

Using his Claw Skill, he swiped at it—only to be shocked when his attack caused no harm. It was like piercing through cotton—so soft that he couldn't do any damage.

Frustration boiled in Daniel. He had been played, yet he was helpless to do anything about it. He snorted and began reassessing the system spirit.

Why was this guy so handsome? And how did he make such a feminine sound earlier? Daniel narrowed his eyes suspiciously.

The system spirit noticed and looked at Daniel in confusion. "Why are you staring at me like that?"

"Tell me, are you gay? No worries, I am a good keeper of secrets," Daniel asked, squinting.

Silence filled the cave. Then, a loud cry erupted.

"God forbid! I reject it!"

Daniel blinked at the outburst. He calmed his heart when he saw this.

He had no problem with a Harem System or a Demonic System—but a Gay System?

Alas, that wasn't his thing.

Looking at the system's reaction… it felt oddly familiar.

"F*ck off! How can I be gay? I'm a full-fledged man, forming my own harem of beauties!" the system spirit snorted.

Now Daniel was even more confused. He eyed the system spirit warily.

"Where did you learn to talk like that?" Daniel asked.

This system had tricked him once already, and now that he thought about it, this behavior felt strangely familiar.

"From you," the system said sheepishly.

"Wait, what do you mean?" Daniel frowned. He had no memory of teaching the system anything.

Unless…

The system spirit coughed when it saw Daniel looking at him warily. Then, it burst into laughter.

"No need to be so on guard. Our fates are tied. If you die, I die. There's no reason for me to harm you," the system explained.

"As for why I talk like this—it's because I was created based on your personality. I know almost everything about your life on Earth."

Daniel found this hard to believe. Was he really like an open book to the system?

"Hmph, prove it," Daniel snorted, his lizard face scrunching up.

The system spirit smirked and taunted, "Do you want me to spill your secrets? Fine."

"I'm sure you remember a girl named Joy," the system said slyly.

The mention of that name pricked Daniel's heart. His mood sank slightly, and the system noticed.

"Hmph, who's that? I have no recollection of that name," Daniel scoffed, feigning ignorance.

The system spirit snorted internally. "Let's see how long you can pretend."

"That fine young girl from your 300-level year in university—the one you had a massive crush on. She was like your dream girl, the perfect one."

"The moment you laid eyes on her, you fell in love. Tch, what do they call it again? Oh, right—love at first sight. Even though she was in a different department, you always found ways to talk to her."

Daniel's eyes widened in shock. This was his deepest secret. It was embarrassing, and ever since then, he hadn't been as interested in women.

"Don't worry, I'm just getting started," the system spirit continued slyly.

Daniel coughed, flustered.

"Back then, whenever you thought about her, you'd hug your bedsheets, imagining they were her, before falling asleep."

"Then, one day, you couldn't take it anymore. You decided to confess your feelings. She told you to meet her at a restaurant."

"From her name, Joy, you thought joy had finally arrived in your life. You were so excited you started jumping up and down like a frog. Even strangers could tell something was wrong with you."

"Ahem, that's enough. Speaking of which, I suddenly remember now," Daniel's lizard face forced a smile.

"Ah, but I want to continue," the system spirit snickered.

"Why the hell do you want to continue?!" Daniel roared.

"Well, someone might be listening, and they might want to hear the whole story. It's bad to leave a story unfinished," the system spirit pouted.

Black lines appeared on Daniel's lizard face.

He tried to stop the system from speaking, but since he couldn't even touch it, let alone hurt it, he was powerless.

"Where was I? Oh, right!" the system spirit grinned.

"You wore your best clothes, checked yourself in the mirror at least a dozen times, and made sure you looked perfect before heading out."

"But when you arrived at the restaurant, you saw her… hugging another man."

"Your maiden heart shattered on the spot," the system spirit giggled.

"You confronted her, asking why. She told you he was her boyfriend and that you were beneath her—blah, blah, blah."

"But that wasn't the worst part. On your way home, you encountered a rat, a cat, and a dog—each one taking turns biting you."

At this point, the system spirit was rolling on the floor, laughing uncontrollably.

Daniel's face burned with embarrassment.

How naive he had been back then.

In the end, he hadn't met Joy—only sorrow.
