Chapter 18 - Ailment

Thankfully, they hadn't gone too far. Longwei gave a pile of napkins to Yu Han as he frantically drove back to the Capital. His forehead was constantly sweating, confusing Yu Han.

Apparently Yu Han's sickness was too sudden for him. It should've been sudden for Yu Han as well, but surprisingly, he felt calm. This was one of those instances where he could tell these emotions weren't his.

Before leaving the Capital, he randomly started crying—knowing well that those weren't his emotions. At this point, he wouldn't be surprised if the sickness wasn't his either.

The car stopped outside the Imperial Palace, and Longwei frantically rushed out, opening the door for Yu Han.

The snowstorm continued endlessly, painting the Imperial Palace pure white. Yu Han sheepishly followed Longwei inside the palace, his mind attentive to the soft sound of snow as they walked on it.

The two reached the Imperial Study and saw the same elderly servant warming his hands against a small heater placed right outside the study.

"Commander Liu?" the elderly servant asked in confusion, "How come you-" he added before gasping out loud, "Young Master! What happened?"

Yu Han glanced at his blood drenched clothes. Surely, the sight would concern anyone.

"Mr. Hong, we need to see His Majesty," Longwei urged.

Mr. Hong pressed his hands together in nervousness, "His Majesty just left for the Empress' Chambers. If you follow east, you might see him."

Longwei immediately grabbed Yu Han's arm and dragged him to rush east. Yu Han tried to struggle, but Longwei was completely immersed in rushing to the Emperor quickly, making Yu Han give up instantly.

"Mr. Liu, wouldn't it make more sense to go to a doctor?" Yu Han out of frustration.

"No," Longwei replied swiftly, increasing his pace.

Yu Han sighed deeply, giving up on wasting his energy. Suddenly, Longwei gasped upon seeing the Emperor's back.

"Your Majesty, wait!" Longwei called him out loud.

Yu Han's eyes widened as the Emperor actually stopped upon hearing Longwei's voice. He slowly turned his head to the right, glaring at the two whom he ordered to leave. Yu Han could hardly see his face. In his hands was a handkerchief, folded neatly.

Longwei instantly dragged Yu Han closer to the Emperor before kneeling himself, "Punish me for returning, but Yu Han is sick…" he panickingly looked up at the Emperor, "Your Majesty… Are you-"

"When I asked you to leave, I meant forever," the Emperor sneered, "You just defied my edict."

Longwei gulped and looked down, having nothing else to say. It was strange. Yu Han found their interaction stranger than his sudden illness.

"Looks like you're sick too," Yu Han looked at the Emperor's hands in which he tightly clenched the handkerchief.

The Emperor frowned and ignored Yu Han's remark, "Stand up, Longwei. Leave at once."

Longwei instantly stood up and bowed, grabbing Yu Han's arm before turning around to leave.

"Show him to the Imperial Physician before you leave if it concerns you," the Emperor added before walking away.

Longwei paused with his eyes widened. He glanced at Yu Han, "Let's go to the Imperial Physician."

Yu Han was dumbfounded. He didn't see why they had to rush to the Emperor when they could've just gone to a doctor directly.

Regardless of his opinion, he quietly followed Longwei to the Imperial Physician. The old doctor was cooped deep inside his office, large heaters surrounding the entire room.

When he heard the door of his office opening, he poked his head from under the desk and gasped upon seeing Longwei.

"Commander Liu!" the doctor uttered before struggling to stand. As his hands grabbed onto the table to help lift himself up, the multiple documents and laptop on the table slid down and fell on him, making him shout out loud.

Yu Han was shocked at the sight, but Longwei remained uninterested, as if he had seen the same scene before.

The doctor finally managed to stand up, "Who's the patient?" he asked, completely out of breath.

Longwei pointed at Yu Han. The doctor immediately grimaced since Yu Han's clothes were full of blood stains. He gestured to Yu Han to come near him, so he did quietly. He checked his pulse, heard his heartbeat, and measured his blood pressure.

"What are your symptoms, kid?" the doctor asked.

"I felt nauseous during the car ride and threw up blood," Yu Han explained, "Ever since I threw up, I feel fine."

"Did you eat something before riding? Or any other notable symptom?" the doctor proceeded with his questions.

"I didn't eat anything," Yu Han answered before glancing around. Longwei was carefully listening. Yu Han wasn't sure if he wanted to tell the doctor about his other strange symptoms like slipping into his mind and feeling emotions that weren't his.

The doctor seemed to notice Yu Han's reluctance, "Can Commander Liu leave us for a minute?"

Longwei narrowed his eyes, "Why?"

The doctor smiled, "You know how kids are. I'll call you back."

Longwei sighed and left the room as requested. Now that Yu Han was alone with the doctor, he could be honest about his symptoms.

"I don't feel like myself from time to time," Yu Han went straight to the point, catching the doctor off-guard. He was quite confident. "I have emotions I can tell are not mine. I'll cry out of nowhere, feel angry, or calm when I shouldn't. I also slip into my mind and see visions."

The doctor skeptically grabbed a notepad and started noting his symptoms, "Since when have you been experiencing these symptoms? Is it the first time you had a physical symptom alongside?"

Yu Han nodded, "Ever since I…" he paused to rephrase his words, "It's been a few weeks. I never had physical symptoms before."

"So, before those few weeks, you were okay?" the doctor asked. "Did a significant event occur and triggered these symptoms?"

Yu Han was lost for words. He didn't know what to say. He glanced around out of nervousness.

"It's fine. If you tell me, I won't tell a third person," the doctor assured him. "Promise."

His eyes were sincere. Maybe Yu Han could trust him.

"I… lost my memories. I think…" Yu Han hesitantly uttered.

The doctor took a deep breath, "So, let me get this straight. You lost your memories of when you were alright, and you have had these symptoms ever since you can remember, yes?"

"Yes."

"Sounds like a mental ailment," the doctor uttered, "Are you staying at the Palace?"

Yu Han shook his head, "Me and Mr. Liu are about to leave soon."

The doctor nodded and grabbed his notepad to note his diagnosis, "Wherever you go, make sure to get in touch with a doctor and show them these notes. The diagnosis will take some time, so you might need to visit a doctor multiple times. Your body's overall healthy, so your physical symptoms might be a product of stress. I'll write some tips to help you keep your symptoms manageable for the road."

The doctor was as nice as he looked. Yu Han politely accepted the notepad and thanked the doctor. Some of his questions were answered, and he felt a little more calm.

Therefore, he felt the office and told Longwei they were good to go. Once again, they sat in the car and made their way north despite the harsh weather.
