The walk wasn't long before he found an exit. One of the buildings set off that pulling feeling.
He stopped for a moment looking at the door, before approaching it and entering. On the other side was an office building, quite empty, but in good enough condition. That was Level 4.
And so he walked around aimlessly he passed by a few wanderers. Everyone looked at him weirdly.
Then he passed some people who seemed to be guarding something. One of the armed men looked at him for a bit. "Nil... Is that you?"
The kid didn't even look at him, that name was unfamiliar to a certain extent. "Hey!" - The man stepped forward and stopped him by placing his hand on his shoulder.
"Nil..."
The kid just looked at the man with a confused look. "Who's that?"
"You~... we were friends. Traveling buddies till i settled." - the man said with saddened eyes.
"I think you have mistaken me for someone else."
"No i have not. Unless... The backrooms have taken away every bit of you."
"..." - the kid just looked at him with a neutral expression.
"C'mon, you must remember something. I'm Daniel. C'mon. We met at Level 2 and narrowly escaped death. Then at Level 3, we managed to avoid every entity and found a royal ration, and then shared it like brothers. Then when we got here~" - suddenly the other one who was on guarding duties placed his hand on Daniel's shoulder and shook his head once Daniel looked back.
Daniel looked crushed and broke down, seeing the loss of a friend in such a way. For them to stand in front of him in this glitchy forgotten state was just salt in the wound. - "I'm sorry... Only if i decided to come with you..."
Nil looked down at him with an expression that screams pity. He crouched down and looked at Daniel. - "It's alright."
Daniel, looked with hope; he hoped that Nil was back to his senses. - "Do you remember?"
"No, sorry... By that summed up story i could tell we went through a lot... I don't know actually... Level 3. Level 2... I don't know what those are."
"Yes... He is gone..." - Daniel said quietly. "Goodbye, my brother..."
"Yeah... I think it's best i go." - The kid pointed with his thumbs behind him, before awkwardly sliding away.
"Wait!" - Daniel said running up to him. - "Wait... I don't know what you went through... But at least let me make it up to you..."
Daniel proceeded to give him a spare phone that was in the base, before explaining a few stuff, like exits of this level, how to use the phone, how to get wi-fi connection and those stuff.
After all of that they part ways, once again... Daniel was still in pain of losing a friend who helped him in those hard times.
The exit to level 5 was near. The kid easily found it.
He thought over the useful information, that there is an entire wiki about.
But before going to level 5 he decided to stop for a second and see the wiki.
"Now let's see the wiki," - he said to himself, turning the phone on and entering a search engine, after which he wrote in the link. It didn't work. No internet. Instead the dinosaur game appeared.
"Mmm, moving pictures to distract myself with..." - He mocked the simple game, but it was fun.
A good five minutes later he got off of it and continued moving. He proceeded up the stairs and found himself at a hallway within some type of old hotel, but it was in pristine conditions.
The atmosphere was nice, the jazz in the background, the halls and rooms were light and overall it was pretty to look at.
He began walking and looking around. He already felt someone's eyes on him.
As he stepped into the lobby there came a voice. "Ah. Welcome my strange friend... I was expecting you."
There was a man with a squid head and a business suit.
"You are probably wondering who i am. You may call me the gentleman of level 5, but you can call me Gent for short."
"Would be awkward if he asks for a name..." - The kid thought to himself.
"So. What do you want me to call you by?"
The kid just looked at him, before they proceeded to stand in an awkward silence for 5 seconds.
"What do i tell him? Danny named me Nil and i'm supposed to accept it... How do i tell him i don't have a name?"
"Why is he just standing there. I asked a normal question." - The Gentleman thought to himself.
"Well... I kinda don't have a name... A man named me Nil, but i still don't know where that name came from..."
"Nil... Sounds familiar... Oh... Now i remember. I have seen you before. But never had the pleasure of meeting you personally... Let me make up for that. Perhaps we can form an alliance, hmm? But if we are talking about such stuff i would prefer we continue talking in my office."
The gentleman proceeded to walk away, towards one of the corridors, but the kid was too deep in thought to care about that. "I have existed before.... But how? What were i?.. A human?"
"Are you coming?"
"Maybe later, thank you..."
"Are you alright, friend..."
"Existential crisis, i have more questions than answers..." - Without saying anything else he turned around and walked off.
The gentleman was just confused by how he cut off the conversation, but he didn't push the subject further.
