Chapter 32 - THE GATE OF SHARD'S

Chapter 30: The Gate of Shards

The second gate loomed before Leon, its surface jagged and fractured like a shattered mirror frozen in time. Dark energy seeped through the cracks, pulsating with an ominous rhythm. Above it, an inscription flickered into existence:

"The Gate of Shards: Relive the fragments of your past to shape the foundation of your future."

Leon stood still, his chest heaving as he tried to gather his strength. The echoes of his last trial still clung to him, and yet the pull of this new challenge was undeniable.

"This gate," the System intoned, "is not merely a test of strength. It is a crucible of memory. Each shard will show you moments you have lived, but also those you have forgotten—or wished to forget. You will be forced to confront the weight of every choice you've made."

Leon exhaled slowly, his fingers curling into fists. "No point in turning back now. I've already walked too far down this road."

The jagged door groaned as he pushed it open, the sound like glass scraping against stone. A swirling vortex of light and shadow enveloped him, dragging him into the depths of his own mind.

---

Leon landed in a familiar place—a small, dimly lit hut with cracked walls and a dirt floor. He froze as he saw a younger version of himself, barely ten years old, sitting in the corner. His face was streaked with tears, his arms wrapped around his knees as he stared at a single flickering candle.

"This is the night it happened," Leon realized, his throat tightening.

The door to the hut burst open, and armed men stormed in. They grabbed the boy, dragging him outside into the cold night. The flames of his burning village illuminated the sky, the screams of his people piercing the air.

"Run!" a voice shouted—his mother's voice. But the younger Leon didn't run. He stood frozen, his small frame trembling as he watched his parents cut down before his eyes.

Leon clenched his fists, his nails digging into his palms. He had buried this memory deep, but here it was, raw and unrelenting.

The scene shifted. He was older now, a teenager, standing over the body of a man he had killed in cold blood. His hands were stained with blood, his face devoid of emotion.

"I did what I had to do," Leon thought, but the weight of the memory bore down on him. The man's face—twisted in fear and pain—was etched into his mind.

One by one, the shards of his past played out before him: moments of triumph, moments of failure, and moments of devastating loss. Each one tore at him, threatening to break his spirit.

"You think you're strong?" a voice hissed from the shadows. "You think you can outrun the past?"

Leon turned to see a figure stepping out of the darkness. It was himself—but not quite. This version of him was darker, colder, and emanated an aura of malice.

"You've lied to yourself for years," the figure sneered. "You've pretended that your pain makes you stronger, but all it's done is turn you into a monster."

Leon's jaw tightened, his hands shaking as he stared down his doppelgänger. "Maybe I am a monster," he said quietly. "But I'm a monster who's still standing. And I won't let my past define me."

The figure lunged at him, and the two clashed in a whirlwind of blows and energy. Every strike felt like it was tearing Leon apart, but he fought on, refusing to yield.

Finally, with a roar of defiance, Leon struck the final blow, shattering the dark reflection into countless shards.

---

When the vortex faded, Leon found himself back in the golden expanse, his body battered but his spirit unbroken.

The System spoke, its tone solemn.

"You have passed the second trial. The Gate of Shards has revealed the strength of your resolve. One trial remains. Steel yourself, for the final gate will test not just your body and mind, but your very soul."

Leon wiped the blood from his lips, his gaze hardening as he looked toward the horizon. A third and final gate began to take shape, its aura radiating an overwhelming sense of power.

"One more," Leon muttered, his voice low but steady. "Just one more."

With determined steps, he marched forward, ready to face whatever lay ahead.
