Chapter 17: The Path of Two Doors
Leon staggered back from the gate, his breathing ragged. The trial had taken its toll, but his determination burned brighter than ever. Kaelina stepped forward, her usual air of indifference replaced by something almost resembling concern.
"You've crossed the first threshold," she said. "But this isn't over. The System always demands more."
Leon nodded, wiping sweat from his brow. "What's next?"
Kaelina gestured to a pathway that had appeared behind the ruins. The ground seemed to shimmer as if reality itself was bending around it. At the end of the path stood two massive doors, each inscribed with glowing symbols.
Leon frowned. "A choice?"
Kaelina nodded. "The System loves its choices. These doors represent two paths, and each will shape you differently. Choose carefully."
As they approached, the inscriptions on the doors became clearer. The left door was adorned with flames and jagged lines, radiating raw, destructive energy. The right door bore flowing patterns and soft light, exuding an aura of tranquility and control.
Leon hesitated, staring at the doors. "What's behind them?"
Kaelina folded her arms. "The left door leads to the Path of Conquest. It's a path of aggression and dominance, where you'll gain abilities to crush your enemies but at the cost of great risk and inner turmoil."
She pointed to the right door. "The right door leads to the Path of Harmony. It's a path of balance and understanding, where your abilities will grow in precision and control, but progress will be slower and more deliberate."
Leon's gaze shifted between the two. The flames of the left door called to his raw instincts, promising power to overcome any obstacle. But the calm energy of the right door appealed to his desire for mastery over himself and his abilities.
"What would you choose?" he asked Kaelina, his voice quiet.
She gave him a small, enigmatic smile. "This isn't my trial, Leon. The System doesn't care what I think. It only cares what you choose."
The mark on Leon's chest pulsed, as if urging him forward.
He closed his eyes, the memories of his journey so far flashing before him—the Wraith hounds, the Sentinel, the Arbiter. Each step had tested him, forcing him to adapt and grow.
When he opened his eyes, he stepped forward. His hand hovered over the door he felt drawn to, the weight of his decision pressing down on him.
Finally, he made his choice.
The door creaked open, light spilling out and enveloping him. Kaelina's voice echoed faintly behind him.
"Whatever path you've chosen, remember this: the System will push you to your limits. But it's your choices, not your abilities, that will define who you become."
As the light consumed him, Leon felt the world shift around him once again. The journey ahead was uncertain, but his resolve remained unshaken.
He would face whatever the System had in store.
