Chapter 9 - The story of the preservers

The fire crackled softly in the hearth, casting warm light across the small cottage. Outside, the world seemed to be slowly waking up—trees budding, animals stirring, and the land slowly regaining its vibrancy. But inside, there was a heavy silence. As they sat in silence, Erya spoke up, her voice hesitant, "I need to say something."

The air was thick with the weight of the unknown, and Kael, Erya, Calen, and Mimi sat in uneasy stillness, each waiting for Erya to speak.

After a long pause, Erya finally spoke, her voice steady, but laced with sorrow. "My parents were preservers," she began, her eyes focused on the dancing flames. "They weren't just scholars or magic users—they devoted their entire lives to studying the magic that flowed through this kingdom. It was ancient, hidden in the earth, the air, and even in the creatures. My parents knew that if the magic grew unchecked, it could destroy everything."

Kael leaned forward, his curiosity piqued. "So they were trying to stop it from consuming the kingdom?"

Erya nodded, her face hardening as she recalled the past. "Yes. They believed the magic could be controlled, that with the right knowledge and spells, they could keep it from destroying the world. They studied it for years, learning about its origins, its power. But eventually, they realized they were wrong. The magic wasn't something that could be contained. It was alive. And once it started growing, it began to spread beyond their control."

Erya paused, her eyes shadowed with grief. "It started slowly at first. Unexplained occurrences—animals acting strangely, plants growing in twisted shapes. But soon, it spread beyond that. People began to change. Some lost their minds, consumed by the magic. Others became obsessed with it, wanting to control it for themselves. My parents realized too late that they couldn't control it anymore—it was growing too powerful. And they knew they had to stop it, before it consumed everything."

Her voice softened as she continued. "They tried spells—powerful, draining spells to weaken the magic. They spent years trying to control it, to contain it. For a while, it seemed to work. But the magic always pushed back, harder each time."

Kael's heart sank as he began to understand the magnitude of the danger. "So, what did they do to stop it?"

Erya took a deep breath before answering, her expression firm with both regret and resolve. "They sealed it away. My parents used an ancient altar—one built long before their time—to trap the magic inside. But they knew the seal wouldn't last forever. So, they took extreme measures to ensure it stayed contained."

Mimi, who had been listening in silence, spoke up. "They sealed the map too, didn't they?"

Erya nodded. "Yes. The map was the key to unlocking the altar. Without it, no one could release the magic. So my parents sent it far away, into a place where no one could ever find it. They knew that if anyone ever found the map, the magic would be set free again."

She looked up, her gaze distant, her voice barely above a whisper. "When they sealed the magic, it not only trapped the destructive force but also stopped all the life forces in the kingdom—the trees, the animals, the people. Everything was frozen in time. The magic was weakened, but the seal was never meant to hold forever. Now, as the magic slowly regains its strength, it will break free again. And when it does, it will consume everything—releasing the dormant life forces while spreading uncontrollably."

Mimi, her voice filled with realization, whispered, "That's why I was freed all of a sudden."

Calen nodded grimly, his expression sober. "Not only you, Erya," he said quietly. "When the magic was set loose, I too was freed. And every other life form—creatures, plants, and people—was awakened. The magic didn't just release the force; it released everything it had sealed away."

Kael turned to Calen, his face tight with concern. "Is there any way to stop it?"

Calen met Kael's gaze, his voice steady but tinged with sadness. "There is a way, but it's not easy, and it comes with great risk."

Kael's heart raced. "What is it?"

Calen's eyes grew distant as he spoke, his voice thick with emotion. "My father was one of the preservers. He was part of the group that tried to seal the magic. But the price was terrible. The preservers… they were burned to death during the sealing process. Their lives were sacrificed to trap the magic, hoping it would be enough to keep it contained."

Erya's eyes darkened as she understood the depth of the sacrifice.

Calen continued, his voice somber. "The only way to revert the magic to its natural state is to find the Life Gem and activate it using ancient spells. The gem can control the flow of magic, regulate its power, and restore balance. Without it, the magic will only grow stronger."

Mimi's expression grew grim. "And where is this gem?"

Calen's face tightened with worry. "The gem is not in this kingdom. It's hidden in a far distant place, beyond the reach of most. It's guarded by ancient forces so powerful that no one has ever been able to retrieve it."

Kael let out a slow breath, processing Calen's words. "So we need to find this gem... but no one has ever succeeded?"

Calen shook his head. "No one. It's been hidden for centuries, protected by forces we can't even begin to comprehend. But it's the only way."

Erya stood up, her voice resolute. "We don't have a choice. If we don't find the gem, and control the magic, everything will be lost."

Mimi stood as well, her expression firm. "We have to try. The kingdom, the people, everything depends on it."

Kael's gaze hardened, his determination evident. "Then let's find that gem. We'll face whatever we must to stop this magic."

Calen nodded, his eyes filled with both a sense of duty and a faint glimmer of hope. "We'll need to move quickly. Every day we wait, the magic grows stronger."

With their resolve set, the group stood, ready to face whatever dangers lay ahead. The path was uncertain, the journey fraught with peril, but the Life Gem was their only hope. As they prepared to step into the unknown, the fire crackled behind them, a reminder of the challenges they would face. The magic was stirring, and the kingdom was on the brink. But with the Life Gem, they believed they still had a chance to restore balance and stop the magic from consuming everything.
