Chapter 4 - Conquering Control And An Unexpected Mage

The next morning, Elara woke up earlier than usual, feeling a surge of energy.

The sun had barely risen, and the world outside was still wrapped in a soft blanket of dawn.

Excited to practice her powers, she slipped out of bed and quietly made her way outside, determined to conjure more of the glowing orbs that fascinated her so much.

After a few hours of trying, Kendrick finally stirred awake. He stretched and looked around, noticing that Elara was missing. Concerned, he hurried outside, calling her name softly.

"Elara?" he called, scanning the yard.

He soon spotted her in the open space, her arms raised, eyes closed, as she focused intently.

A smile crept onto his face as he approached her. "What are you doing, Elara?" he asked calmly.

She opened her eyes, looking excited yet a bit frustrated.

"Dad! I'm trying to master my powers. If I can do that, then maybe you won't have to worry about me when I'm out exploring," she explained, her enthusiasm shining through.

Kendrick chuckled, walking closer to her. "That's a great idea, but remember, mastering your powers takes time. Let's see what we can figure out together."

The two began to work side by side, trying to understand how Elara's abilities functioned.

As they practiced, Kendrick recalled the last time Elara had used her powers.

"You know, when you were upset yesterday, your white orbs changed color—first to red, then black, and they melted our floor," he said thoughtfully. "But when you calmed down, the light returned and even restored the floor."

Elara listened closely, intrigued. "So, I can heal things?" she asked, her eyes wide.

Kendrick nodded but added, "I'm not sure if it was healing or perhaps you turned back time to the floor, but we'll find out."

Just then, Lila appeared, having come to join their conversation.

"What are you two up to?" she asked, her curiosity piqued.

Elara smiled and filled Lila in on their practice. "I'm trying to learn how to create more orbs," she explained.

Kendrick stood up, stretching his arms. "Are you both hungry? I can whip up something for breakfast," he said, hoping to lighten the mood.

Both girls raised their hands in agreement, excitement glimmering in their eyes. "Yes, please!" they chorused.

"Alright then, let's head inside!" Kendrick said, leading the way.

As he prepared breakfast, Lila and Elara chatted about Elara's powers.

Lila, wanting to help, asked, "What's the hardest part about creating the orbs?"

"I think it's that I feel like I have to force them to come out," Elara admitted, frowning.

Lila put her fingers on her chin, deep in thought. "Maybe that's the problem! What if you're trying too hard?" she suggested.

Elara looked confused. "What do you mean?"

"Maybe instead of forcing it, you should just will it to happen," Lila explained, her voice encouraging.

Elara tilted her head, trying to understand. "But how do I do that?"

Lila sighed, thinking carefully. "It's like when you want to make a wish. You don't force it; you just believe it will happen."

Meanwhile, Kendrick was stirring a pot of food and listening to the girls' conversation.

He glanced outside to see them getting along well, a soft smile spreading across his face as he continued cooking.

Just then, Elara stood up, her eyes bright. "I think I finally understand what you mean, Lila! I want to try it!"

Lila nodded, stepping back to give Elara space. "Go for it! I'm here cheering you on!" she encouraged, giving Elara a thumbs up.

Elara closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and focused.

"Don't force it, will it," she repeated to herself. Slowly, she pushed her arms outward, peeking to see if anything happened, but nothing appeared.

Disappointed, she closed her eyes again and whispered the words, then pushed her arms out once more. Still, nothing. Determined, she opened her eyes, frustration creeping in.

Lila approached her again, her expression supportive. "Don't worry, Elara. It takes time to learn. Let's brainstorm some more."

Elara sighed, rubbing her temples. "My head feels like it's about to explode from thinking!"

Just then, Kendrick called out, "Food's ready!" He stepped outside, holding two plates filled with steaming breakfast.

The girls rushed over, eager to eat. As they devoured the food, they couldn't help but compliment Kendrick on his cooking.

"This is amazing, Dad!" Elara exclaimed, her spirits lifting.

After finishing their meal, Elara felt fueled with energy and began to think again. "How can I make this work?" she pondered aloud.

Kendrick suggested, "Why not try chanting some words? Mages often cast spells, and they use words related to their magic."

Lila nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah! You should try that!"

Elara agreed, and the three of them brainstormed what the words should be.

Kendrick suggested, "How about Suntrata Suga Visu Forti, Confraire Sugre?"

Elara and Lila tilted both of their heads in confusion. "Suntrata what"? elara questioned

"What kind of language is that Mister"? Lila asked

Kendrick scratched his head knowing that he had to explain what he just said, "Honestly I don't know, I had a friend once who was a mage, as darkness approaches he always recited those words then orbs of light appeared similar to yours elara" he explained

Lila smiled and said, "You should try it out, Elara! it could work".

Elara turned to Lila, her face full of confusion, "ok but, could you write that down please dad".

Kendrick nodded and grabs a paper then write the spell then gives it to elara.

Elara stood up and reads the spell aloud "Suntrata.... Suga ...Visu .....Forti, Confraire Sugre".

Nothing happened after elara recited the spell, She sighed in disappointment, until, one light appeared.

As elara saw this, she quickly started reciting the spell again and again until she had over seven orbs surrounding her, She smiled and laughed at her achievement.

"Whoa calm down Elara don't over do it dear", Kendrick said worriedly.

Lila then got up and went towards Elara, "make more Elara, make more" she jumped as she suggested.

Elara then recited the spell once more when she suddenly felt tired.

"Suntrata Suga Visu For..... ah" Elara stopped midway of the spell as she could feel her body lossing it's energy.

Kendrick notices this and quickly stood up ready to catch elara, Elara then passes out in exhaustion and Kendrick caught her.

Lila stopped as she saw Elara passes out and quickly approached her.

"Elara are you alright"? Lila asked concerned.

Kendrick then lifted Elara up as she was unconscious.

"Don't worry Lila she's just exhausted," Kendrick smiled softly, looking at Lila. "You should go inside with her," he suggested, but Lila shook her head.

"I need to get back and help my mom with chores. But I'll see you both later!" she replied, waving goodbye.

As Kendrick carried Elara back to her bed, he carefully tucked her in with a warm blanket. After ensuring she was comfortable, he stepped outside for a moment of fresh air.

Suddenly, a voice broke the calm morning. "An elf? How intriguing."

Kendrick turned around sharply, recognizing the voice. It belonged to Kealith, a mage in their town and captain of the local guild.

Kendrick felt a mix of emotions—happiness at seeing an old friend and apprehension about what Kealith might want.
