Chapter 88 - Chapter 88: Coin

A fight broke out in the tavern, and when the tavern owner arrived, he ran into Wright. Following the Braavos tradition he had learned, Wright gave the owner a sum of coin for the bodies and left without looking back.

The tavern owner, smiling widely, saw Wright dragging a man out and then immediately instructed his servants to get to work. Wright's flashy clothing marked him as an assassin, and in Braavos, there wasn't a day that went by without a few assassins dying.

Due to the death of the former Sealord, Braavos had been under martial law, with only warships allowed to dock at the port. Oberyn's ship had been moored near the Ragman's Harbor, which was close to the tavern, sparing Daemon Sand much of his suffering.

Daemon Sand wasn't wearing armor. Wright dragged him by one leg across the ground. Although the distance wasn't far, his clothes were torn, and his hands and back were covered in bloody scrapes, leaving a trail of bloodstains along the stone road.

Oberyn's ships were docked together, occupying a pier, and several Dornish guards stood watch. When they saw Wright dragging someone back, they first saluted him. As they got a closer look at the person, they realized it was Ser Daemon Sand, Oberyn's squire and knight.

The captain of the guard quickly sensed something was wrong. However, these were important men, and the guards dared not act. The captain instructed the guards to secure the pier and prevent anyone from entering, then rushed into the ship's cabin to inform Oberyn.

Wright tossed Daemon Sand at the base of the mast. The mast was one of the strongest parts of a ship, wrapped in iron on the deck. It was also a place where criminals were often executed.

Oberyn quickly emerged from the cabin, followed by his paramour, Ellaria Sand, and his daughters, Nymeria and Tyene, along with the other Dornish officials aboard the ship.

"Wright, explain to me what's going on here?" Oberyn said coldly, eyeing the severely injured Daemon Sand.

"The Golden Company first hired a Faceless Man to kill me, and then they launched an assault. Unfortunately, I killed the Faceless Man, the leader of the Golden Company, and the Sealord!"

Oberyn looked at Wright expressionlessly. "Continue."

"This is my first time on the Essos continent. I've never seen or wronged the Golden Company. Why would they go to such lengths to kill me? Prince Oberyn, don't you find it strange?"

Oberyn replied coldly, "You know what you've done, don't ask me."

Wright crouched down next to Daemon Sand, speaking as he did so. "I came here for one more thing. To find the last remnants of the Targaryen family. Those present in the Small Council are aware of this. It seems someone has leaked the information."

Wright yanked Daemon Sand's hair, turning his face toward Oberyn. "A single faction might not have had such strong motives, but through him, Daemon Sand, these events are all connected. That gives enough reason to kill me."

After saying this, Wright released Daemon Sand's hair and walked over to the ship's railing, leaning against it.

"He is one of your people, and he is just a knight. He has neither the money nor the power to be involved in something so grand."

Oberyn looked at Daemon Sand. "Do you think being a mage makes you all-knowing?"

Wright replied, "There are many things I don't know."

Oberyn walked over to Daemon Sand, crouching down to examine his injuries. Daemon Sand looked at Oberyn, understanding that unless an explanation was given, Wright would not back down. He silently mouthed the words, "Unbowed".

Oberyn squeezed Daemon Sand's shoulder before standing up and turning to Wright, raising his voice. "Eyewitness, physical evidence— you have nothing, and yet you dare slander a prince?"

Wright responded, "For some things, i think that what i see and hear is enough."

Oberyn's tone grew more intense. "Judging things cannot be based on just thinking! On guessing! I can also think of many things, such as how it was your House that killed my sister and framed the Lannisters, deliberately causing discord between Dorne and the Westerlands."

As Oberyn spoke, the tension grew thicker, and he walked over to one of the guards, snatching the spear from his hands.

"Wright Baratheon! Do you really think being a mage makes you invincible? A dragon can easily burn down several cities in a day. You are no dragon, and the people of Dorne will never bow to dragons, nor will they fear Robert or you!"

The Dornish soldiers around them adopted a fighting stance, their spears aimed at Wright, and even the Dornish civil officials unsheathed their knives.

"Father!" Nymeria attempted to approach, but the guards stopped her.

Wright knew he couldn't present evidence. To be involved in such a plan, especially knowing those who participated, one by one, were all tight-lipped. "Your Grace, I do not wish to start a war. I only want to know whether Daemon Sand's contact with the Golden Company was of his own will, or if there is something else behind it?"

Oberyn, holding the spear, walked over to Daemon Sand, then turned to Wright. "As my ex-squire, he has some freedom, but I never ordered him to contact the Golden Company." Oberyn was not lying; Daemon Sand had always been at his side during talks, taking the initiative to handle matters and reporting back after completing them.

Suddenly, Oberyn's spear moved swiftly. The tip pierced through Daemon Sand's eye, emerging from the back of his head.

"Under Dorne law, if one acts in the name of their lord without permission, I have the right to sentence them to death."

Oberyn withdrew the spear and gave Wright a cryptic glance. "Are you satisfied now?"

Wright said nothing. Without witnesses or physical evidence, could he really kill Oberyn, then kill Doran? And start a war with Dorne?

"Then this matter ends here," Wright replied.

Schemes like these were tricky. If someone managed five moves, discovering three was already a success. If all five were revealed, either someone betrayed them, or it was a deliberate display meant for Wright to uncover.

Oberyn said, "No Dornishman on board welcomes you now. Leave."

Wright tossed a Braavos iron coin to Oberyn. "A coin doesn't just have two sides; sometimes, it only has one."

With that, he turned and left the ship. Nymeria and Tyene, seeing Wright and their father at odds, exchanged a look. The two sisters held hands and walked up to Oberyn.

"We intend to stay with Wright," Nymeria said.

As Wright disembarked, Oberyn's previously furious expression faded into calm. He held the iron coin between his thumb and index finger, stroking the coin's surface. The Braavos coin had the same image of the Titan of Braavos wearing a helmet on both sides.

"Go ahead. Remember to write often."

After everyone left, Oberyn returned to the cabin. He pulled out a gold dragon coin, one with different designs on each side, and then the iron coin Wright had thrown to him. He placed both coins together.

"Coins have two sides. Viserys is dead, so now it's Aegon and Wright."
