Chapter 24 - Increasing the Flume’s Grade

Huuummmmm

While examining the fruits of his labor with Glacia perched atop his head, Aoni soon noticed a faint humming coming from the Flume, which quickly drew his attention.

Physically, there were no changes, indicating it wasn't actually doing anything and that it was more of an alarm or notification of sorts, meaning…he had a new summon available.

'Traveler's Display,' uttering the mental command with the initial implication of checking what his present Progress Points were, he quickly sucked in a sharp breath of air.

Aoni wasn't expecting the drastic change in the number of points, from 18.22 all the way up to 50.61, a fact which was as shocking as not, considering all he had been doing over the last several hours.

'For starters, it's a safe assumption that by awakening my Energia Cell, on the first try too, I had netted quite a profit in the form of Progress points; however, it's not like I stayed static after that either, which brings up a curious topic.' Tapping his chin, Aoni's eyes drifted away from the floating display and up at his summon.

'Have Glacia's actions been bringing in a steady stream of progress points this whole time? Better yet, is it even possible for me to get points from my Summons?'

'I'll take that as a yes,' noticing the flash of information appearing in a small text box to the right of his traveler's display, Aoni quickly swapped over to his Summon's display as a plan began cooking in his mind.

'Although I am not able to increase Glacia's power, the same can't be said about the Flume…with 50 points, it should be possible to increase the Grade, but I wonder if that increase will correlate with increasing my own Stars? If that's the case, then it would be an important experiment which would gain me valuable information.'

Reaching up with both arms, Aoni captured Glacia and gently put her down on the bed, much to her annoyance, before making his way over to stand in front of the Flume.

'It's now or never…' He thought with slight hesitation; there was a strong possibility that he'd lose all 50 points in this single endeavor, yet in contrast, it could also be the difference between summoning something stupid like an old toothbrush and a powerful Dragon.

Well, he thinks that, but all a higher Grade Flume does for summons is slightly increase the rate of getting something good. This was also why he was somewhat jealous when Aoni saw that one kid from Class 1-A with a high-grade Flume stone in his pack.

Not only would it have a higher rate of pulling something over 3-Stars, but it would also have a lower rate of getting something trashy, like, say, a no-Star summons, which was entirely possible.

'Increase the Grade of My Flume.' He wasn't entirely sure why he felt the need to, but as Aoni stated the command to the TD, he placed his hand against the surface of the artifact, maybe for good luck or maybe to appease his anxiety that it would suddenly disappear…who knows because the lad sure didn't.

For a faint moment, he noticed a ripple of something spread out from his hand toward the Flume, but just as suddenly as it appeared, it vanished again, and from a visual standpoint, nothing had changed with the artifact.

'That's…not what I expected to happen…' Aoni thought while removing his hand and quickly checking how many points had been deducted, only to realize it was a measly loss of 5 progress points.

'I thought for sure it would increase it to 2-Stars, but instead, the flume grew just like how Attributes or Summons are supposed to, by increasing steps instead of stages.'

'46.11, Increase the Grade of My Flume.' His eyes shifted away from the Flume upon noticing the added points. Without further hesitation, Aoni placed his hand back on the artifact a second time, this time focusing on the point of contact to see if he could notice the strange phenomenon again.

As before, the Flume didn't show any outward changes, but again, the strange visual instance where something seemed to transfer from his hand to the Flume reappeared and then vanished a second time.

Blinking several times to see if it was just his dry eyes causing this hallucination, Aoni quickly checked his progress points but couldn't help but scratch his head with his free hand upon seeing the numbers.

'So it was 5 for the first step increase along with an added 0.5, but this time, minus five points, it seems It only cost me 10 points to upgrade. Does that mean if I wanna bump it up to full star…it would be 20?' Noticing that he had 41.11 points remaining, Aoni decided to throw caution to the wind and try to push the Flume to the Full Star Step.

'There was quite a bit of information to take away from those few lines, but first and foremost, there's a "Current" limit for how high the Grade of my Flume could reach.'

'Having a current limit means it should be able to increase at some point…but I have no clue how to do that. Then there's the case of my losing and earning Progress points.'
