Chapter 14 - Changes to the Summon’s Display

'Summon's Display…' uttering the mental command to his TD, Aoni's eyes narrowed, and not for a good reason.

'Oh…it's a she…anyway…Articus-GigantoUrsusPithecus….part of that name is familiar…the whole GigantoPithecus part, that's supposed to be that mythical Crypid people swore Existed on Terra nicknamed BigFoot…but I have no clue what the Articus and Ursus part is…hold on, isn't that just a fancy name for the cousin of BigFoot the Yeti…Articus must be its environmental tag, so Artic Giant…something, Ape?'

Seeing the notification pop up, Aoni knew he must be on the right track. However, the Ursus part still confused him to the point that he looked over at the sleeping little creature. That was when he began noticing distinct characteristics more clearly: its paws, claws, and the density of its fur…it all kind of resembled a bear.

Sure, he had seen slight bearish characteristics earlier; however, it was only now that the lad was putting two and two together.

'So this little gal IS a bear ape hybrid acclimated to cold environments.' Of course, Aoni was merely simplifying it in a manner his dumb brain could understand, in part because there wasn't really a way for him to gather more information but also because he had no idea if he was correct other than the steady trickle of notifications about gaining more Progress Points.

'I really should give her a name though, she's family now…but what should it be…Arti? No, that's dumb, and I refuse to call her something stupid like Yuki or something…how about Glacia? Yeah, that sounds good.' Nodding in contentment, Aoni noticed a change occur on the Summon's Display, as the question marks indicating his Summon hadn't been named were replaced with Glacia, followed by…

Aoni's eyes flicked toward the fading notification before focusing back on the updated Summon's Display, and he noticed a few key points; for starters, unlike normal Travelers who were supposed to start with 5 LoS slots, he apparently only had a single one, fortunately since there was an arrow next to that line, the lad knew it could be increased with Progress Points.

However, when he noticed that Glacia's Potential was abysmally low, Aoni could only sigh because, unlike his stats and Potential…there was no arrow next to her Potential or Grade, indicating his Attribute couldn't upgrade her in the same way he could himself.

'It's a shame, but regardless of her Potential, Glacia is my first Summon; from the moment I saw her size and now age, I knew she wasn't going to be that helpful to me anyway.' Accepting his fate, Aoni looked back down at the vest, then the second half of the cut-up sleeping bag, and tried to figure out a plausible method to turn it into sleeves.

'If only I had some thread and a needle, I could cut the remaining half of my sleeping bag into equal parts and stitch them into the vest, forming sleeves…wait…stitch…sutures THE FIRST AID KIT!'

Bouncing off the chair, he hurried to the bookshelf and picked up the lunchbox-sized first aid kit. He popped the latch and dug out the needle, which looked more like a fishing hook than a sewing needle, and the thick synthetic silk/nylon hybrid sutures before hurrying back to the desk.

So began the long process of cutting out equal-sized sleeves from the remaining sleeping bag and sewing them onto the makeshift jacket. By the way, it took well over two hours and several minor injuries to complete. Still, when it was finished, Aoni had to admit that he was quite proud.

This time, Aoni didn't miss the notification, and upon seeing it, a wide grin spread across his face because he was now at 7.35 Progress points.

Yet even if he got some satisfaction from earning Progress points, it didn't solve the underlying issue; he had no idea how many points it took to increase his Statistics.

Without a doubt, it was a rather large issue, considering it left Aoni unable to plan anything ahead and stuck wondering how to move forward.

For example, what if it costs 5 points to increase a single stat from G- to G? That would mean he could only improve one right now.

Expanding further on that thought, which stat should he even choose?

With too many unknown variables in play, there was only a single viable conclusion Aoni could come to… and that was to experiment.

'Increase My Grade Potential.'

Insufficient Progress Points

'Increase My Rank Potential.'

Insufficient Progress Points

'Ok, so that means it will take more than seven points to increase my potential; for now, I can forget that until I have ten or more points…next would be my attribute.' Without getting discouraged, Aoni moved on to the next statistic on his TD.

'Increase my Attribute Grade'

Error Incompatible Command

'That figures. Without a dropdown arrow, I should have known it wouldn't work, which means the only way to increase my Attribute's Grade would be through use, just like any other, but I suppose that makes a lot of sense.'

'Still, the same can't be said for my Attribute's Potential; since it has an arrow, I can just boost the potential up once I get enough points and hope that my Attribute works like any other, which only leaves my actual Stats.'

Sitting up straight, Aoni took a deep breath and calmed his mind before issuing a mental command.

'Increase my Attack Stat,'

Increasing Attack from G- to G

Progress Points have been Deducted

His eyes glimmered with excitement as Aoni read the notifications. Unfortunately, before he could celebrate, something akin to an electric shock ran through his entire body, paralyzing all senses and causing every muscle in his body to clench up suddenly.

"A…" Unable to understand what was happening or even scream in pain, Aoni quickly realized that even breathing was incredibly difficult due to the onset of paralysis he was experiencing.

In fact, he even ended up slumping in the chair and losing complete control over his motor functions.

Just about the only thing Aoni could move was his eyes, and even then, all he was able to do was watch on in horror as he spasmed uncontrollably.
