Chapter 8 - Cultivation and Confrontation

Chapter 8

The next morning, Grey woke up in high spirits, enjoying breakfast with his mother as they chatted at the table.

"I was thinking of going out to look for a job so we can have enough to eat," Clara said, her voice laced with worry.

Grey frowned. "Don't look so down, Mum. Things will change for us soon. And don't worry, you're not alone—I'll start looking for work too."

"No!" Clara objected immediately. "I don't want you stressing yourself over household matters. Let me take care of them."

"Mum, nothing you say will change my mind. I've already decided, and I promise, I won't do anything dangerous or exhausting," Grey insisted firmly.

Clara sighed. "Honey, I know you want to help, and I appreciate it. But there's hardly anything someone your age can do."

"Yeah… because I'm useless." Grey's voice dropped, and he abruptly stood up from the table. "I'm heading out. I'll be back late."

Before Clara could stop him, he stormed out of the house.

Grey wandered through the bustling streets, his thoughts heavy. He needed a quiet place to practice the fire magic he had learned from the book. There was only one place that fit the requirements—the most dangerous location nearby.

Without hesitation, he headed west, leaving the town behind as he entered a different forest than the one before. He walked for several minutes, noticing the gradual thinning of trees. The deeper he went, the fewer animals he saw, and an unnatural heat began to settle over the area.

The temperature steadily rose, growing unbearable with each step. Grey clenched his jaw, enduring the searing heat as his skin began to sting. The once-brown earth beneath his feet turned black, scorched by relentless flames. Streams of molten lava bubbled from cracks in the ground, hissing as they oozed out.

Before him stood a massive volcano, its peak spewing molten rock into the air. The suffocating heat made it nearly impossible to breathe, yet Grey pushed forward until his legs gave out. He collapsed at the volcano's base, panting heavily.

"Damn it! This place is insane!" Grey gritted his teeth, wiping sweat from his brow. "Why does unlocking the fire attribute require cultivating in such extreme heat?"

He scowled as he recalled the even more absurd requirement for the lightning attribute—getting struck by lightning. "At least this isn't as ridiculous as that…"

Shaking his head, he sat cross-legged and closed his eyes, forcing himself into meditation. Despite the unbearable heat scorching his skin, he focused inward, steadying his breath. He inhaled the blistering air, feeling it burn his lungs, then slowly exhaled, channeling his mana.

He guided the mana through his core, circulating it throughout his body. The intense heat mixed with his mana, breaking down his physical limitations and refining his essence. His core trembled, reacting to the foreign energy. Five hours passed, yet he remained motionless, unaware of the transformation occurring within him.

His body, once vulnerable to the lava's heat, had adjusted. He no longer felt the burning agony—his body had adapted. But just as he began to embrace the sensation—

"GROWL!"

The deep, guttural snarl shattered his concentration. Grey's eyes snapped open, locking onto a beast emerging from the shadows.

It was a wolf—no, something far more terrifying. Its fur glowed like molten lava, its crimson eyes burning with predatory hunger. Saliva dripped from its jagged fangs, sizzling against the blackened ground.

"A beast? Here?!" Grey's heart pounded in his chest. The oppressive heat had dulled his awareness, and now he was at a severe disadvantage.

The wolf didn't hesitate. With a thunderous roar, it slammed a massive paw into the ground, sending tremors rippling outward. A jagged spike of obsidian rock erupted from the earth, its edges glowing red-hot.

Before Grey could react, the rock ignited mid-air, transforming into a blazing projectile. It struck him square in the chest, launching him backward. He crashed against the volcano's base, pain exploding through his body as cracks formed in the scorched stone beneath him.

"Kuh!" Grey coughed up blood, his limbs trembling as he forced himself upright. His vision blurred, but his instincts screamed at him to stay alert.

"This... This is a level 3 beast," he muttered, his voice tinged with both awe and dread. "And it can wield both fire and earth attributes… I'm completely outmatched."

Beasts were ranked from level 1 to 8, with level 1 being the weakest and level 8 the most powerful. (That's to Grey's knowledge. The world is vast) The wolf that had attacked him before his summoning had been a mere level 1 beast. Now, he faced a level 3 beast—one capable of using elemental abilities.

The wolf let out another deafening growl, its fiery fur flaring brighter. It was preparing another strike.

Grey clenched his fists. He had no elemental power to counter it… or did he?
