Chapter 1: The Crimson Sky
The evening had been like any other. Aya Winters, dressed in the beige office attire that had long become her second skin, stared blankly at her computer screen. Numbers, spreadsheets, and the hum of fluorescent lights filled her little cubicle in the corner of the office. She had spent her entire life chasing stability, hoping that the safety of routine would somehow bring her the fulfillment she desperately sought. But deep down, Aya knew this wasn't the life she had dreamed of.
She had dreams of painting, of creating art that spoke to the heart of those who saw it. But that was a dream she kept buried. Her reality was deadlines, reports, and the never-ending cycle of tasks that filled her days. She glanced at the clock: 9:32 PM. Another late night at the office.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed with a notification:
Emergency Alert: Meteor Shower Predicted. Seek Immediate Shelter.
Aya frowned, unsure whether it was some sort of hoax or another overblown warning. After all, meteors fell all the time—just not near her. She clicked on the notification and skimmed the alert, her eyes darting across the screen, but her mind wasn't focused.
But then the sky outside the office window began to change.
Aya froze.
The first sign was a faint red glow, casting an eerie hue over the city skyline. It was subtle at first, like the distant embers of a dying fire, but it rapidly grew in intensity. She rubbed her eyes, thinking she was imagining things.
It wasn't a sunset. It wasn't any natural phenomenon she'd seen before.
The entire sky was turning crimson.
Her heartbeat quickened, an inexplicable unease washing over her. The buildings outside seemed to disappear into the glowing atmosphere, like the whole world was being consumed by some unnatural fire. The fluorescent lights in the office flickered, buzzing erratically, and the air turned thick with tension.
Aya stood up, pushing her chair back with a screech. Her hand reached for the window, eyes locked on the red sky, the color pulsating. The city outside seemed to hold its breath, as if the world itself was waiting for something to happen.
Then, it did.
A loud crack echoed across the sky.
Aya's breath hitched in her throat. The stars were falling. No, not falling—crashing. Thousands of burning fragments descended from the sky, each one shining like a comet, but they were much, much closer. Some were large, others smaller, but they were all headed toward Earth with terrifying speed.
She backed away from the window in horror, her heart pounding in her chest. Her thoughts were a chaotic mess as she watched the first impact strike a building in the distance. A brilliant flash of light erupted, followed by an explosion that shook the ground beneath her feet.
"Everyone! Get down!" A voice rang out across the office.
Aya turned to see her coworkers scrambling, panic setting in. People ran for the exits, screaming, but the building trembled again, throwing everyone to the ground. The windows shattered, and the ceiling lights flickered violently, as if the entire building itself was being torn apart.
Another impact. The building groaned, and dust filled the air. Aya didn't know what to do—she didn't know what was happening. The world felt like it was coming to an end.
Her phone buzzed again, the screen flashing an urgent message.
System Alert: Environmental Instability Detected. Activation of Protocol Alpha.
Aya's fingers trembled as she tapped the screen. She stared at the glowing text, unable to comprehend what was happening.
BEGIN SURVIVAL PROTOCOL
CODE AWAKENING INITIATED.
Before she could react, the entire room seemed to warp before her eyes. Her vision blurred as if reality itself was bending. The walls pulsed with an unnatural red light, and a strange, cold voice echoed in her mind.
---
SYSTEM ALERT: USER IDENTIFIED. CODE: AYA WINTERS. INITIATING SYNCHRONIZATION WITH APOCALYPSE CODE.
---
Aya gasped, clutching her head as a surge of foreign energy coursed through her veins. Her skin tingled, every muscle in her body screaming as though something inside her was awakening. She didn't understand—her heart was racing too fast, her thoughts scattered—but somehow, she knew this was no normal disaster.
Something had changed.
Outside, the sounds of destruction intensified. More meteors rained down, now followed by the horrific screeches of creatures—monstrous, twisted beings emerging from the wreckage. The city was descending into chaos, and there was no escaping it.
A loud roar echoed from the streets below.
The walls shook again, and Aya's legs gave way. She hit the floor with a thud, struggling to breathe as the voice in her mind grew louder.
SYSTEM WARNING: MONSTERS DETECTED. ESSENCE REQUIRED FOR SURVIVAL. BEGINNING EVOLUTIONARY TRIAL.
She gritted her teeth, trying to stand. Evolutionary trial? What was that supposed to mean? She pushed herself to her feet, her body trembling.
A massive crash sounded from the stairwell, followed by the unmistakable sound of claws scraping against the walls. Aya's eyes widened as the first of the monsters—an abomination made of twisted metal and flesh—appeared at the entrance to the office.
It was too big to fit through the door, but that didn't matter. The creature screeched, a sound that made Aya's blood run cold. Its glowing, red eyes locked onto her, its massive jaws snapping as it tried to claw its way into the room.
Aya scrambled backwards, panic rising in her chest. She needed to get out. She had to escape. But there was nowhere to go. The hallway was filled with more of those things, their roars mixing with the sounds of destruction outside.
Then, she felt it.
A surge of power coursed through her body, stronger than anything she had ever known. It was as though her very DNA had rewritten itself in an instant. Her muscles bulged, her senses sharpened, and her mind cleared. The world around her slowed.
SYSTEM ALERT: EVOLUTION COMPLETE. NEW SKILL: ESSENCE CONSUMPTION ACQUIRED. USE IT TO SURVIVE.
Aya didn't know how, but she knew what she had to do. Her body moved before her mind could catch up, instincts taking over. She grabbed the first weapon she could find—a jagged piece of debris—and charged toward the creature.
The world around her blurred as she moved with blinding speed, the creature's snarls growing louder as it lunged.
Aya swung.
The impact of the blow was almost too much for her to handle. The creature screeched in pain, its massive form jerking back, stunned by the force of her attack. The debris she wielded had punctured the monster's side, and it staggered, its glowing eyes flickering.
The creature roared again, enraged, but Aya was ready. She swung once more, this time aiming for its exposed throat.
With a sickening crack, the creature's head hit the floor, its body twitching before going still.
Aya stood over the monster's corpse, panting, her heart racing. What had just happened? Was it her? Was she the one who killed it?
ESSENCE CONSUMED. NEW POWER AWAKENED. EVOLUTION COMPLETE.
The voice echoed in her mind, but Aya didn't have time to process it. The building was crumbling. The world was ending. And somewhere in the chaos, she realized that her fight for survival had only just begun.
