Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Useless

A prosperous kingdom could be seen before us, people fill the streets, all different marks or insignias can be seen on their clothing. Each one representing a different level of strength that the person possessed.

This kingdom was known as the kingdom of Athas, it was the first place to accept the death sentence to none magic users. Believing themselves to be above normal people in every way possible, it only made sense to them.

But even with all the chaos a family could be seen far on the outskirts of the city. A woman dressed nicely, accompanied by a man who also appears to be wearing nice clothes.

"Wah! Wah!" A baby is crying.

The woman chuckles before looking down at the baby. "He really is adorable but what are we supposed to do?" The Woman asks with a bit of worry in her voice.

Both of them ponder for a few moments before the man finally begins to speak. "I won't let my only child be killed for his lack of powers Maria. I was able to reach my status because of the strength I possess. I believe that Mason can get there too." The Man speaks with confidence.

"But if they found out you don't have the ability to use magic it would cause an uproar." Maria says with a worried expression on her face.

As a baby I couldn't entirely understand the situation at the time but I knew it didn't sound good, maybe that's why I cried.

"We'll raise him for now. We won't let him into the schools for his own safety but that's fine. I know that he can learn everything from us." The Man speaks with confidence.

Maria looks down at Mason before speaking once again. "I trust you Theo. Please don't let anything happen to our boy no matter what." Maria responds while picking Mason up.

16 years later. (Training with swords outside the house.)

A teen with short curly black hair, blue eyes, wearing a black shirt, pants, and some decent shoes could be seen sparing with an older man whose hair appears to be gray. His eyes were green, he wore an attire of a noble.

Time flies by when your parents are teaching you everything I guess, or maybe it's just because they keep me busy. I'm learning academics with Mom and fighting with Dad when I'm done.

I really do wonder if there's more to the world than this, I haven't really seen anybody since I was born except for Mom and dad.

"See you're getting better son." Dad says with a bit of excitement in his voice.

Dad disappears for a few days for work most of the time but we always train when he's here. I've been learning how to fight with a sword since I was 10 and how to fight without one since I was 12.

He believes it's best I know how to handle myself in any situation I'm in so this isn't the worst thing for me.

"Boys dinner is almost done!" Mom calls out with joy in her voice.

Time really does continue to fly by without any problems. Meals are always great, especially since they are made by Mom but I don't know what I want for myself.

I'm basically an adult so shouldn't I be figuring out what I want to do now? Mom tells me all the time that I'm special and that no one can know how special I am.

It all comes down to the fact that I can't use magic, she says that makes me special but I don't know if it's actually a good thing. I've heard them talking about it a few times and it never sounds like a good thing.

Dad sheathes his sword and indicates to stop the fight. "Let's go eat Mason. You did great today." Dad says while walking past him.

Mason followed behind his dad and went inside to eat dinner with his mom. A nice chicken stew for dinner was always a good way to rejuvenate them after their training.

As usual they had conversations while we eat but I couldn't help but wonder what dad does. He knows how to fight, he's smart, and I don't think he can use magic either.

Knock. Knock. Someone could be heard knocking on the door. "We need to speak now. Please open the door." A muffled voice could be heard speaking.

"I'll get it." Mom says while standing up.

His dad immediately gets up and gestures for her to sit. "I got it. You just got done cooking for us so let me handle the door Maria." Dad responds while getting up from his chair.

I watched patiently as Dad opened the door to a group of knights, it seemed like something serious was going on. They definitely didn't look too happy to be here talking with dad.

Mason snuck away from the table to get closer so that he could hear the conversation. "Theo you know how much we respect you but there's some awful things that came to light recently." A man says with a bit of a serious tone to his voice.

"I'm listening." Theo responds while crossing his arms.

Mason peeked out the window to see that isn't wasn't just a small group of knights but actually a small army of them. "We know your secret and you know what that means." The Man says while drawing a glowing red sword.

This doesn't look like it's going to be good, what the hell is happening?

"Riel you don't have to do this." Theo pleads.

The Man known as Riel goes to swing his sword and immediately a shield forms from Theo's arm and deflects it. "I should've expected you to use tricks, it's common for those without magic. It won't hold." Riel speaks before bringing the blade down once more.

"Maria get Mason away from here and run! You know where to go!" Theo shouts before punching Riel.

A shockwave goes past the group and sends Riel into them. "He's considered a legend for a reason so be cautious while dealing with him." Riel instructs as he gets up.

"Mason let's go!" Mom shouts while extending her hand.

Mason ran towards his mom while looking back at the fight going on with his dad and the knights. Theo appeared to be fighting back without any issues but they didn't send some low tier knights.

Riel was considered an Sven which is the second highest rank in the army of Athas, along with his army.

Stab! As Mason turned around to face his mom he could see a sword through her stomach. "Mom!!!!" Mason shouts as tears begin to flow down his cheeks.

Dad is fighting outside, mom was just stabbed in front of me. I've been training with Dad for a reason so I need to help save us while he handles everything else.

"H-Huh..." Mom questions while looking down at the blade in her stomach.

Mason could see the person standing behind her had a hood on, they were dressed like an assassin.

I can't guarantee that I'll win this fight since I only ever fought against Dad but I won't let Mom just die here. Mason quickly picked up his sword and began to charge the assassin behind his mom.

"You jerk! I'll stop you!" Mason shouts while his sadness changed into anger.

He went past his mom and began to bring his sword down towards the assassin. Clang! "Got some energy to you, but you're not skilled enough to stop me kid." The Assassin speaks with a deep voice.

The Assassin blocks the attack and then kicks Mason back towards a wall while they take the blade out from his mom's stomach.

Gah. I felt as if I was out of breath as I hit the wall but I can't let myself be stopped this easily or else mom is going to die...

He quickly got up and charged in once again, swinging his sword relentlessly at the enemy before him. "I guess I'll have to kill you too so this is only natural." The Assassin says with a bit of disappointment in its voice.

They continued to dodge Mason's flurry of swings with ease before finally catching his hand holding the sword. Stab!! Drip. Drip.

Mason looked down to see the blade was now in his stomach, blood dripped onto the floor as he tried to move his hand with the sword in it.

It hurts so bad, but I don't want Mom to die....yet it seems like I might die here with mom.

Shockwaves continue outside as the fighting got louder, soon enough a burst of blue light went past the assassin. "Seems they are almost done outside." The Assassin says while twisting the blade.

"G---It hurts..." Mason says softly before falling back onto the floor.

I was now laying in a puddle of my own blood, useless. I was completely useless against this assassin while Dad was out fighting a whole army by himself.

Maria just looked at her son as the life slowly began to leave her eyes. "I love you Mason. I'm sorry..." Mom says weakly.
