Chapter 2 - A week later

Axel's POV.

Oh, come on! Of all the times for this to happen! - I half-yelled in agitation. The power had gone out in the middle of writing an essay that was due tomorrow. I hate writing essays, which makes me put them off to the last minute. Being a science prodigy did nothing to help my abysmal writing skills. Overall, it was turning out to be a literal nightmare.

The darkness settled over the city like a thick curtain. The days had become shorter as winter approached, and now, at 7 pm, the city was already cloaked in night.

. Outside my window, the streetlights were out, but the city below was still alive in its own way. Cars crawled along the streets, their headlights cutting through the gloom. Horns blared sporadically, more frustrated than usual, as the outage messed with traffic lights.

The apartment was silent except for the faint sound of engines rumbling below and the occasional murmur of voices filtering in from the neighboring units. Normally, the low hum of electricity went unnoticed, but now its absence left an uncomfortable void.

"Power outages are rare in this area; its power grid is hidden underground, shielding it from bad weather. Not that there was any bad weather today, It could be something minor like construction or internal damage, but they would've warned us. Or… it could be something major, like a cyberattack. A well-placed EMP could also do the job. But what motive would someone have to use an EMP?" My fingers drummed on the desk as I frowned, my earlier frustration giving way to unease. " I'm probably overthinking it," I tried to convince myself. Yet, that familiar prickle of something being off wouldn't leave me. My instincts have never led me astray before.

"Damn it," I muttered. "Fine, I'll check it out." My curiosity had gotten the best of me.

Looking back on it, I should've listened to the saying curiosity killed the cat. Sat my ass at home, written the damn essay on paper, or asked for an extension and lived my life like a normal teenager. Well, as normal as a retired assassin could manage.

Nothing could prepare me for the shit show I was about to walk into.
