Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 :THE UNEXPECTED TWINS

The air in the opulent birthing chamber hung heavy with anticipation, a mixture of excitement and apprehension clinging to the ornate tapestries and gilded furniture.

Queen Hella, her face pale and drawn, lay gasping, her brow beaded with sweat. The court physician, his face grim, hovered over her, his hands trembling as he wiped away the blood.

"My Queen," he croaked, his voice hoarse with worry, "the second childā€¦ itā€¦ it is coming."

A collective gasp echoed through the chamber. The firstborn, a boy, had been delivered without incident, a child, who was a a miniature replica of the King, with his father's brown hair and brown eyes. The girl had cried , a sound that had filled the chamber with a sense of relief and joy.

But the secondā€¦ the second had been a struggle from the beginning. The Queen's cries had grown weaker, her face contorted in agony. The physician, his brow furrowed, had worked tirelessly, his assistants hovering nervously around him.

Suddenly, a loud sound of thunder pierced the air, followed by another, bigger healthier and stronger cry with her hair dark and piercing blue eyes. The physician, his eyes wide, turned to the Queen. "Your Majesty, it's twins!"

Exhaustion washed over Isolde, but a flicker of joy sparked in her eyes. Twins. Two tiny miracles. She struggled to reach out, her fingers brushing against the soft down of the firstborn, who was now being swaddled by a midwife.

"And the other?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

The physician hesitated, his gaze flickering towards the door where several courtiers stood, their faces pale with apprehension. The King, a man of imposing stature and a temper to match, paced impatiently outside, his aura of power radiating through the thick oak door.

"The otherā€¦" he began, his voice trailing off. "Your Majesty, theyā€¦ they were not joined."

Bella's brow furrowed. "Not joined? What do you mean?"

The physician cleared his throat, his voice gaining a firmer tone. "The childrenā€¦ they did not share a placenta. Two separate beings, born of the same womb."

A hush fell over the chamber. The courtiers exchanged uneasy glances, their whispers barely audible. Twins, yes, but born of two separate conceptions. The implications wereā€¦ unsettling.

The King, alerted by the hushed whispers, pushed open the door and strode into the chamber, his face a mask of impatience. "Hella! What is the meaning of this delay?"

The Queen, her gaze fixed on the physician, did not answer. The physician, his face pale, bowed his head. "Your Majesty, the Queen has given birth to twins."

The King's eyes widened. "Twins? Impossible!" He glanced at the firstborn, a girl who was being nursed by a wet nurse. "And the other?"

The physician hesitated, then blurted out, "They wereā€¦ separate. Two separate conceptions."

The King's face darkened. "Separate conceptions? What sorcery is this?"

The court physician, sensing the King's growing anger, stammered, "I cannot explain it, Your Majesty. It isā€¦ unprecedented."

The King paced furiously, his eyes narrowed. "Unprecedented? This is an abomination! How could this happen?"

The Queen, her voice weak but firm, spoke for the first time. "Perhaps," she said, her gaze fixed on the King, "there is more to this than we understand."

The King whirled around, his eyes blazing. "More to understand? What do you mean, Isolde?"

The Queen, despite her exhaustion, felt a surge of defiance. She had always been a woman of strong will, a queen who dared to question the King's authority. "I mean," she said, her voice gaining strength, "that there may be forces at play beyond our comprehension."

The King scoffed. "Forces beyond our comprehension? You speak of the gods?"

The Queen remained silent, her gaze fixed on the two infants lying side-by-side in their cradles. The firstborn, the King's spitting image, slept peacefully, his breathing even and regular. But the otherā€¦ the other eyes were open staring deep into the sky , its tiny fists held, its eyes beautiful

A chill, inexplicable and profound, crept down the Queen's spine. She looked at the two infants, their tiny forms so different yet so intimately connected, and a chilling thought crept into her mind: these childrenā€¦ they were not merely twins. They wereā€¦ different.

The King, sensing the Queen's unease, dismissed the physician with a wave of his hand. "Remove yourself from my sight," he commanded, his voice a low growl. "I wish to be alone with my Queen."

The physician, relieved to be dismissed, bowed her head and scurried out of the chamber. The courtiers, sensing the King's growing anger, quickly followed suit, leaving the King and Queen alone with their two newborn children.

The King moved towards the Queen, his eyes filled with a mixture of anger and suspicion. He looked at the two infants, his gaze lingering on the second child, the one who had been born of a separate conception.

"Who else has seen this child?" he demanded, his voice low and menacing.

The Queen, her voice trembling, replied, "Only the midwives, Your Majesty."

The King's eyes narrowed. "And you are certain no one else witnessed thisā€¦ this anomaly?"

The Queen, her heart pounding, met his gaze. "I am certain, Your Majesty."

The King turned his attention to the firstborn, his expression softening slightly. This child, the heir to the throne, was perfect, a miniature replica of himself. But the otherā€¦ the other was an enigma, a mystery that cast a long shadow over the royal court.

As the King gazed at his two newborn daughter, there was a sense of unease settled over him. He felt a premonition, a dark foreboding that these children, born under such strange circumstances, would bring both blessings and curses upon his kingdom.
