Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5: OLD MEMORIES

Clara felt the magical atmosphere of the village caroling event sweep her into its

clutches as she walked, hand in hand with Lily, her heart fluttering with anticipation.

The snow swirled around them, painting the night in soft white. Twinkling holiday

lights made the village square glow, casting a warm aura into the chill of winter's air.

Liam met them at the entrance, wearing a cozy scarf and a wide grin..

The moment their eyes connected, Clara felt a rush of warmth, a reminder of simpler

times.

"Hey! Ready to sing?" Liam asked, his excitement impossible to contain.

"Yay! I love singing carols!" And as she hopped up, Lily uttered through the spinning

haze of cheer.

There she was engulfed by the sounds of some familiar music wafting through the

evening air together with the sound of laughter.. Villagers gathered around, chatting

and embracing the festive spirit. Clara felt a smile stretching across her face, the

atmosphere wrapping around her with warmth.

"Look, they have hot cocoa!" Lily exclaimed, pulling Clara's hand towards a stall.

"Good idea, let's grab some," Clara agreed. They ordered three cups topped with

whipped cream and dashed sprinkles, the cocoa warming their hands as they stood

beneath a massive Christmas tree adorned with shimmering ornaments.

With a perfect cup warming her hands, Clara felt the tension of the past year begin

to thaw away. She watched as Liam engaged with Lily, their laughter mingling into

the cold air.

"Alright, are you ready to join the carolers?" Liam asked, inviting Clara along as he

pointed towards the gathering crowd preparing to sing.

Taking a deep breath, Clara clasped Lily's hand tightly, nervous yet exhilarated.

"Sure, why not! Let's do it!"

As the last wave of tourists entered the square, joyful energies filled the air while

Clara sang songs of another season, her heart beating to the backbeat of the local

brass familiar.

A small touch of sadness cast down over her, lingering as she sang, the ghost of

memories she couldn't shake coming close enough to breathe beneath her.

Now, long after the jubilations had quieted, Clara felt energy leaving together with

her sister's warm embrace. She couldn't help but compare the night to her life

before. The echoes of joyful caroling had once been paired with her ex-husband's

laughter, and now, it echoed with Liam's warm presence instead.

Liam caught her gaze mid-song and flashed a disarming smile. "You have a great

voice, Clara! Why don't you sing more often?"

"Thanks," she replied, her cheeks heating. "I mostly sing in the shower these days."

Liam chuckled, "You should come to my karaoke nights sometime—you'd kill it!"

For the first time in a while, Clara felt a flutter of excitement. There was something in

Liam's presence that made her heart race. Perhaps it was the hint of shared history,

or the gentle way he treated her and Lily. She couldn't quite pinpoint it.

The night wore on; they found a serene spot amidst the many villages gathered

around a common fire pit for wonderful storytelling and reflection. This was a

cherished moment warm with friendship, laughter, and shared customs that

reminded Clara of her childhood..

"Have you ever thought about how this holiday brings everyone together?" Clara

mused, taking a sip of her hot cocoa.

"Absolutely. I think that's the best part," Liam agreed, leaning closer. "It's about

connection and making new memories."

In that instant, Clara realized how much she craved connection. She shared stories of

her family traditions growing up, igniting a spark in Liam as he recounted his own

memories—his parents' annual holiday parties and the jovial chaos they usually

brought.

Suddenly, Clara felt an overwhelming sense of belonging in their laughter. She

longed to explore deeper conversations, but a flicker of fear flared again. What

would happen if she stepped beyond friendship?

With the fire crackling nearby, Clara couldn't help but glance at Liam, who was

looking at her with genuine interest. The chemistry between them felt electric, but

would she be able to surrender to it?

"Let's find a spot to take a picture!" Lily squeaked, breaking Clara's thoughts.

"That's a good idea! Come on, let's get a cozy family shot," Liam replied, taking Lily's

hand as they led Clara away from the fire.

They posed together, Clara and Lily on one side while Liam playfully attempted to

drape an arm over both of them. Laughing, they captured moments filled with joy

and warmth.

Together, close-knit, Clara felt an indescribable connection to Liam—like a pull,

magnetic in its blinding glory and equally terrifying. In such a picture-perfect

moment, she wondered whether love could really start over.
