Once she had hung up on the phone, he asked her directly, "What are you searching for?"
Helena was stunned for a second. She did not expect Vernon to ask her that. She thought he wanted to distance himself from her. She had felt that from him since their wedding.
[Should I tell him? Would it impose him in any sort? I don't want to trouble him, though.]
Vernon had already felt that Helena always tried to keep him out of 'trouble' so that he would maintain his 'purity' and wouldn't be 'tainted' by the darkness of the world.
He couldn't understand why she would have the feeling that he is so pure and doesn't understand the world outside.
He felt upset that his wife looked down on him even though he also knew that that wasn't her intention.
