Chapter 8 - chapter 8

Shadows of Truth

Carina walked far from Vito, her heart pounding and her thoughts whirl in anarchy. Now sitting heavily in her pocket, the pendant he had given her represented betrayal she could not but face directly. She looked down, but she should have felt his eyes on her—a predatory glitter hidden below his amazing smile.

Her steps quickened, showing her across Ivory College's well-kept grounds. She wanted room, air, readable writing. With Vito, with the whispers she had imagined, with the gnawing sense of unease that seized her tighter every day, something wasn't right. The shadows about her appeared darker, the air fraught with stress she could not understand.

by the period she reached the stone courtyard, she'd slightly surveyed her surroundings. She stopped, her breath stitching, only when she felt a strong presence. Turning, she found herself face to face with Zed.

His look went into hard, his jaw set in a manner that made her chest clench. There has been something savage in his look, a restrained intensity that sent a shiver down her backbone.

"We want to speak," he continued, his voice low and strong.

Carina hesitated, her instincts battling together with her feelings. Zed transformed into like a storm—unpredictable, effective, and totally consuming. She wasn't clear if she ought to run from him or in the direction of him.

"Approximately what?" she asked, her tone protective.

"Vito," Zed replied, his gaze hardening. "you couldn't believe him."

Carina bristled. "And why must I believe you? You've been aloof, cold—and now you want to warn me about him? What's your view, Zed?"

Zed's jaw tensed, his anger slightly restrained. "My attitude is maintaining you alive."

Her coronary heart missed a beat. "What are you speaking about?"

He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. "You don't recognize what you're managing. Vito isn't who you observed he's. None of this is what it appears."

Carina's thoughts raced, the gravity of his words seeping in. She opened her mouth to demand answers, but a voice stopped them, clean and unbothered.

"Zed," Vito known as, his tone oozing with false politeness. "Always so serious. Can't you permit Carina feel a second of peace?"

Carina grew to begin to see Vito walking closer to them, his confidence almost pompous. The uneasiness among the 2 guys crackled like strength, their unspoken anger filling the space about them.

"This doesn't concern you," Zed hissed, his stance changing, his frame rigid with barely restrained rage.

"Oh, but it does," Vito answered back, his smile bright. "Carina and i have… information. Don't we, darling?"

The endearment sent a shock of pain through her. She glanced at Zed, whose features darkened in addition. His hands clinched at his sides, and for a moment, she thought he may spring at Vito.

"go away her out of this," Zed warned, his voice a dangerous growl.

Vito's sneer grew. "Why? Are you frightened she'll see you for what you virtually are?"

Carina's gaze darted between them, uncertainty and fear scuffling with for control. "What's occurring? Why are you both acting like this?"

Neither replied her. Zed's eyes kept locked on Vito, his body coiled like an animal geared ready to strike. Vito, in appraisal, was infuriatingly serene, as if he has been playing a secret comedic scenario.

"You don't recognize who you're handling, Carina," Zed stated afterward, his voice company. "Stay far away from him."

Vito laughed gently, the sound sending goose bumps down her backbone. "Ah, the protecting acts. So brave, so expected, inform me, Zed, is that this concerning her—or approximately your very own guilt?"

Zeds manage snapped. He lunged, grabbed Vito by means of the collar and pushing him towards a close-by column. Carina gasped, transfixed as the two guys faced off.

"You don't get to speak approximately guilt," Zed twisted up, his voice a toxic whisper. "not whilst you've manipulated her from the begin."

Vito's expression didn't shift. If whatever, his smile deepened. "You're no saint, Zed. Don't pretend you haven't kept your very own secrets."

Carina's belly churned. the load of their comments pressed down on her, the knowledge that she become imprisoned within the middle of something a ways enormous than she'd understood.

"Stop it!" she shouted, coming forward. "Both of you! Forestall treating me like a few pawn in whatever that is."

Zed released Vito slowly, his eyes never wavering. Vito tightened his collar with infuriating ease, as if though the argument had been nothing extra than a small nuisance.

"We'll communicate later," Zed replied to her, his voice softening. Then, without further word, he turned and walked away, his shoulders traumatic.

Vito watched him go, his face unreadable. As he grew to become again to Carina, his smile back, although it not felt comforting.

"Don't allow him scare you," he added his tone comforting. "Zed has a dependency of overreacting."

Carina didn't answer. Her thoughts were a whirlwind, her feelings a jumbled mess. She wished explanations, but neither of them looked inclined to give her the truth.

That night, Carina lay in bed, looking at the ceiling. Sleep felt impossible, her brain replaying the actions of the day. The anxiety among Zed and Vito, the cryptic warnings, the way Zed had checked out her as though she have been the best factor that mattered.

And the pendant she pulled from her pocket, saving it as much as the moonlight shining past the window. It shimmered gently, its brightness nearly captivating. Her hands caressed the stone, and for a second, she believed she heard a voice.

"Carina," the voice whispered, weak and airy.

She bolted upright, her coronary heart racing. The room went into silence, yet the feeling of being watched stayed. She pushed the pendant into her drawer, slamming it close as even if it would keep the peculiar feeling at bay.

Day after today, Carina placed herself on edge, hyperaware of her surroundings. Every shadow regarded to move, each sight seemed like inspection. She couldn't remove the idea that something altered into coming, something she wasn't organized for.

Her discomfort worsened when she saw Zed gazing her from across the quad. His look changed into unreadable, although his presence was unmistakable. She turned away, handiest to nearly crash with Vito.

"Careful," he whispered, steadying her with a hand on her arm. His touch changed into soft, nevertheless it shot a chill through her.

"Sorry," she mumbled, stepping lower back.

"You've been heading off me," he stated, his tone light but his eyes looking.

"I've simply been busy," she lied, trying a grin.

Vito's eyes remained on her, and for a second, she concept he may name her out. But then he smiled the same charming look that had previously made her coronary heart flutter.

"Properly, don't forget approximately me," he stated, his tone mocking. "I'd hate to assume I've been changed."

His statements sounded like a trap, but Carina didn't realize how to answer. Earlier than she ought to, he drew closer, his voice falling to a whisper.

"Be cautious who you consider, Carina. Presently not each person has your pleasant hobbies at heart."

The warning sent a shiver down her spine, however earlier than she should ask what he meant, he turned into long past, disappearing into the crowd like a shadow.

Carina's heart hammered as she regarded around, the weight of his words sinking in. She couldn't break out the sense that the barriers have been staying in, that the fact turned into simply out of reach.

Yet whose truth should she consider?

That night time, as she stood through her window, looking out into the darkish, a movement in the distance snagged her sight. A figure stood at the edge of the woods, just visible in the moonlight. Her breath caught as she diagnosed him.

Zed.

He raised a hand, a nonverbal move that sent a jolt trough her. Earlier than she may wish to respond, he became and disappeared into the darkness.

Carina's heart raced as she grabbed her jacket, her interest overwhelming her worry. She sought solutions, and it seems Zed became the only one prepared to give them.

Nevertheless when she went into the night time, she couldn't remove the impression that she changed into on foot into something a long way larger dangerous than she found out.
