Evelyn was more suited to be the Luna of this pack, until he's able to extract her primordial wolf, but if he couldn't find a way to extract it, he could kill her at child birth, so the beast would be transferred to his grandchild.
Alpha Logan could still achieve that even if Evelyn was just a concubine, or mistress, but a child born by a mistress or a concubine cannot become an Alpha. At most, they could become a gamma, no matter how powerful they were. And Alpha Logan didn't want that.
Just then, a commotion broke out at the entrance.
"What is going on now?" someone asked in the crowd.
A large crowd barged through the door, dragging a battered Evelyn into the hall.
"Alpha, we've found the enemy. It was this omega!"
Alpha Logan frowned, and so did Markkus. He let go of Miranda but didn't take a step away from where he was standing.
Evelyn was exhausted. They've beaten her head into a pig's head. One of her eyes was swollen and closed, but she could see from the other eye that was barely open.
Her gaze was locked on her mate, who was staring back at her but wouldn't move a muscle to save her. His fists were clenched. She wanted to mindlink him and tell him how painful the beating was. She wanted to complain about these people. She wanted to scream and lament how much she despised everyone in the pack, but she was wolfless. She couldn't speak to him.
She tried to move her lips, but they wouldn't move. They were too swollen and painful. Blood repeatedly dripped from her wounds, the black cloak she wore was soaked with her own blood, dying the spot around her red. She couldn't heal even though she wanted to.
"What is going on here?" Alpha Logan stood up from his seat, his eyes blazing with confusion. Wasn't she supposed to heal? He's heard that she healed faster than everyone else. So, what's going on?
Ryker stepped in front of the entrance and bowed to the Alpha. "Alpha, I've been investigating since last night. When I found out she was the only surviving person in the vicinity of the incident, I knew she wasn't innocent. I got a truth pill and forced it down her throat, then she confessed that she sold information to a stranger, who gave her a cloak in return."
He paused when he saw the look on the Alpha's face had turned sour, then continued.
"The person gave her the cloak, hoping she would find them after the pack has been razed to the ground."
"That's absurd!" Alpha Logan yelled. He didn't believe it. But there was no way to prove her innocence either. Unless he was ready to spill the secret, which he didn't want to do.
"I'm sorry, Alpha, she has reasons to do so, because she's been repeatedly bullied in the pack, and she admitted to hating the pack members."
"Is that true, Evelyn?" Alpha Logan asked.
But Evelyn remained silent. The so-called truth pill didn't work on her. She was beaten so badly that she was forced to admit to what she didn't do. She didn't remember what happened last night, but everything Ryker claimed she said was what Ryker forced her to admit to.
But Evelyn didn't refute him, she was waiting to hear what Markkus would say. He knew her better than everyone. Surely, he would know that his soon-to-be beta lied.
"I Markkus Logan Blackwood, rejects Evelyn…as my mate," there was a pause before he completed the rejection.
Evelyn gasped and clutched her chest, curling up on the cold floor as the pain of rejection tried to rip their bond.
Meanwhile, Markkus's wolf roared, filled with rage, and a deep, piercing pain that seemed to shred Markkus's very soul. He felt as though he was being torn in two, his heart and mind was at war with each other. His wolf's fury and anguish threatened to consume him, but he stood firm, his eyes fixed on Evelyn's crumpled form.
'HOW COULD YOU, MARKKUS?!'
His beast thundered, but Markkus ignored it.
'YOU WILL REGRET THIS!', it added.
Evelyn's already battered body was shivering as the pain tore her apart. She almost couldn't believe that Markkus would do this to her. She couldn't speak to accept or reject his rejection.
Alpha Logan was flabbergasted. His face contorted with disapproval. But then again, his son was smart. If he rejected her, he had his reasons. So, he didn't speak against it.
But one thing the Alpha didn't understand was, why wasn't Evelyn healing?
Everyone watched the drama in silence. Some were happy, some were frowning, and others didn't care.
How could a weak omega be Markkus's mate in the first place? It was an insult to Markkus, the ladies thought, as they frowned at Evelyn with disdain.
Miranda was elated. Now that Markkus rejected Evelyn, she could finally find a way to kill her.
Suddenly, Markkus's sank his teeth into Miranda's neck, marking her. He's chosen her as his second chance mate, even though Evelyn hasn't accepted the rejection yet.
He was in pain, his wolf was angry, but he didn't care. He could only do this to protect his reputation. He's just promised his Aunt to seek revenge for his cousin. If he didn't do something, as the soon-to-be Alpha, how would others perceive him?
Evelyn was barely alive now. Her mind was numb with pain, hatred, and betrayal, she couldn't summon a single strength to lift a finger. As she stared at Markkus, who was also staring back at her, Evelyn felt nothing.
"Take her to the dungeon. I'll personally question her about her accomplice," Markkus said as he pulled away from Miranda, after marking her.
However, just as Evelyn was about to be dragged out, two figures walked in from the entrance.
The hall fell silent, wondering who they were. However, the youngsters didn't see the look of shock on the faces of the Elders and Alphas, particularly Alpha Logan, whose eyes were wide with a mix of surprise, fear, and awe.
Those who supported the plan to take out the lycan, exchanged uneasy glances, their faces pale and tense. It was as if they had just seen something they thought was long buried in the past.
As for those who supported the lycan, their faces were filled with deep respect and awe.
