It was what the Dissonants used whenever they wanted to take over an area one step at a time. In their blood existed the smallest of nanobots, and programmed into those nanobots was the ability to 100% extract and copy over the existence of another. Excluding elusive things like the Soul—which the Dissonants were unsure even existed—everything else could be perfectly extracted and infused elsewhere.
However, once the Nanomorph Ability was used on another living organism, that living organism would lose all that they once had. Thus giving them the name 'Husks.'
This was exactly what was happening to Memphis right now…

The original Memphis was no more, now replaced by someone that talked, acted, and inherited everything that she once was. But she… she was no longer Memphis…
