Chapter 10 - Business

"Not possible?" Arlo asked with a smile."It's not that it's impossible," Zhang Yu scratched his head. "I just feel like being a butcher doesn't suit your image, Arlo.""Well, it's better than being a loader, isn't it?" Arlo chuckled, popping a piece of orange into his mouth. "Listen, Zhang Yu, in this world, what you do doesn't matter as much as whether it makes money. Whether you have money or not changes your status in society. Don't look down on your dad for being a butcher—it may not look glamorous, but he earns more than many people in respectable jobs. Status is a façade; money is what's real. But remember, you should only earn money the right way. Dirty money isn't worth it, no matter how much.""Got it, Arlo," Zhang Yu nodded seriously, then lightened up and laughed. "You always speak so profoundly, but I'm still young. Let's talk about making money when I'm out of school.""You cheeky kid," Arlo said, smacking the back of Zhang Yu's head playfully.Meanwhile, Zhang the Butcher was in the kitchen, explaining to Wu Hui why Arlo wanted to learn butchering. Wu Hui was surprised. "Are you saying Arlo has a cheaper supply source?"Zhang the Butcher nodded. "I haven't seen it myself, but you know what kind of person Arlo is—he's honest. If he says he has it, then he does. Teaching him how to butcher won't harm us; if he gets that cheap source, it'll benefit us both."Wu Hui, an ordinary housewife, didn't know much but understood that cheaper supplies meant higher profits. She nodded. "Alright, since he says it's just for a day, teach him. Even if there's no source, we'll still make $500 at least.""Exactly," Zhang the Butcher agreed, finalizing the decision. After lunch, Zhang drove Arlo to a small village where he sourced his livestock. Upon arrival, they saw children herding cows and sheep across the hills. Zhang led Arlo to a farmhouse."Old Wang! Are you home, Old Wang?" Zhang called as they entered the yard."Who's there?" A middle-aged farmer in his forties came out, breaking into a grin when he saw Zhang. "Oh, it's Brother Zhang! Here to check out some cattle?""Cows! Sheep! Pigs! I'll take one of each," Zhang replied."And chickens, ducks, and geese too," Arlo added. After all, the dream space wasn't limited to cattle—there were birds too. Knowing how to handle them might come in handy."Oh? Who's this young man?" Old Wang asked curiously."My nephew from a distant branch of the family. No more questions—just get me one cow, one sheep, one pig, and some poultry. I'll slaughter them on-site. Clear a space," Zhang instructed."Sure thing!" Old Wang fetched a cow, a sheep, and a pig while chickens, ducks, and geese were readily available in the yard."This cow is strong. To slaughter it, you'll need to tie its legs first. One person won't be enough; you'll need at least three strong ones to restrain it," Zhang said. With Old Wang's help, they tied the cow's legs and brought it to the ground. Zhang then drew his butcher's knife and made a swift cut to the cow's neck. Blood spurted out as the cow let out a pitiful bellow and struggled violently, forcing the rope handlers to hold it down with all their strength."This cut is to bleed the cow. Once it's dead, we can proceed with the butchering," Zhang explained.By the end of the afternoon, under Zhang's guidance, Arlo had learned how to slaughter cows, sheep, pigs, and even poultry."Not bad! You learn fast," Zhang said, impressed by Arlo's quick grasp of the skills. "You might just be a natural-born butcher.""Thanks, Uncle Zhang. By the way, how long will all this meat last you?" Arlo asked, looking at the substantial haul of livestock."I went all out today. This should last at least two days," Zhang replied."Two days? Great! I'll bring you two sheep in two days. Check the goods then, and we'll settle the payment," Arlo said.Zhang beamed. "Alright, Uncle Zhang will be waiting for you!"After declining Zhang's invitation to dinner, Arlo headed home, eager to return to the dream space and make more money. The $500 he'd earned yesterday was almost entirely spent as tuition for learning butchery—he was broke!Back in the run-down neighborhood Arlo detested, he found his parents, Niu Xin and Ma Min, at home. They asked how his learning went. Arlo replied confidently, "It went well. I've got the hang of it. In a few days, once I've sourced some supplies, I can start selling meat myself.""That fast?" Niu Xin and Ma Min were skeptical.Arlo sipped some cold water and exhaled. "My teacher said I'm talented and a quick learner. I'm ready to start now. Tomorrow, I'll scout for supplies. If it works out, we can set up a stall the day after. Let's start in our own neighborhood and sell at wholesale prices. I refuse to believe we can't make money that way!""Wholesale prices?" Niu Xin frowned. "Can you still make a profit selling at those rates?"Arlo grinned. "Dad, you don't understand. Some supplies are dirt cheap. Just wait and see—I'll make us rich!"Seeing Arlo's confidence, Niu Xin and Ma Min chose not to question further. They knew they had little to offer and could only support their son's ambitions quietly.
