"Why do you still fight?"
He gritted his teeth, his bloodied fingers gripping the hilt of his blade. The whispers had started ever since the betrayal—a night he would never forget. Banished, cast out, labeled a murderer for a crime he hadn't committed.
A faint glow caught his eye, pulling him from his thoughts. Just ahead, half-buried in the rubble, was a shard of brilliant light. It pulsed faintly, like a heartbeat, its edges jagged and raw. Kael crawled toward it, his breath ragged, his instincts screaming both in warning and allure.
As his fingers brushed the shard, the world seemed to shift.
The battlefield dissolved into darkness, replaced by an endless expanse of stars. Kael found himself standing, whole and uninjured, in the center of the void. Before him stood a figure cloaked in shimmering light, neither man nor woman, its presence overwhelming yet strangely calming.
"Do you seek revenge, Kael?" the figure asked, its voice echoing like a thousand whispers.
Kael hesitated. Revenge? It was tempting. The faces of those who had betrayed him flashed before his eyes—his clan leader, his sworn brothers, even the woman he once loved. But vengeance felt… hollow.
"No," he said finally, his voice steady despite the turmoil within. "I seek… purpose."
The figure seemed to consider his words. Then, with a sweep of its hand, the shard in Kael's grasp surged with light, embedding itself into his chest. Kael cried out as pain seared through him, his vision blurring.
When he opened his eyes, he was back on the battlefield. But everything had changed.
The shard's power coursed through him, mending his wounds and filling him with an energy unlike anything he had ever known. He could feel the whispers now—not just voices, but fragments of memories, lives, and futures.
He rose to his feet, gripping his sword. The air around him shimmered, and he knew his journey had just begun.
Kael glanced at the horizon, where the ruins of a once-great city loomed. He didn't know what awaited him there, but one thing was certain: the world was about to change, and he would be at the center of it.
With a final glance at the shard embedded in his chest, Kael whispered to himself, "If this is my fate, I'll shape it with my own hands."
And with that, he marched forward into the unknown.
