Chapter 17 - The first battle with Malrik

The air in the chamber crackled with tension as Malrik descended the pedestal, his bone mask gleaming under the eerie light that pulsed from the spire's core. Each step sent ripples of dark energy through the floor, and the oppressive presence of the dark lord threatened to crush the group under its weight.

Eren took a step forward, his sword blazing brighter than ever, but Kael grabbed his arm.

"Eren, wait," Kael said, his voice low and steady. "We don't know what we're dealing with."

Eren shook him off, his eyes burning with determination. "We know enough. He has the fragment, and we can't let him keep it."

Malrik stopped a few paces away, his tall figure towering over them. He tilted his head, as if amused by their presence.

"You've come so far, yet you still don't understand," Malrik said, his voice smooth and mocking. "The fragments aren't tools for salvation. They're instruments of destruction, and you've already succumbed to their whispers."

Eren tightened his grip on his sword. "You don't know me."

Malrik's hollow laugh echoed through the chamber. "I know you better than you think, boy. The fragments have marked you as theirs, and when the time comes, you will beg me to take them from you."

The Battle Begins

Eren charged, his blade cutting through the air with a brilliant arc of energy. Malrik raised a hand, and a shield of dark energy deflected the blow with ease. The impact sent a shockwave through the chamber, forcing Kael and Liora to shield their eyes.

Kael rushed in, his greatsword swinging in a heavy, two-handed strike. Malrik sidestepped effortlessly, his movements fluid and unnaturally fast. He countered with a wave of shadow that knocked Kael off his feet.

"Is this all you have?" Malrik taunted, his voice dripping with disdain.

Liora loosed an arrow aimed at the dark lord's mask, but the projectile disintegrated before it reached him. She fired again, this time aiming for his chest, but Malrik caught the arrow mid-air and crushed it in his hand.

"Pathetic," he sneered.

Eren's Power Unleashed

Fueled by frustration and the fragments' whispers, Eren unleashed a flurry of attacks, his movements a blur of speed and ferocity. His strikes pushed Malrik back, the glow of the fragments in his possession intensifying with each blow.

For the first time, Malrik seemed to take him seriously. The dark lord raised his hand, summoning a massive scythe forged from pure shadow. The weapon crackled with malevolent energy as he swung it toward Eren.

Eren parried, the clash of their weapons creating an explosion of light and dark energy that shook the chamber. Sparks flew as they exchanged blows, their movements too fast for Kael or Liora to intervene.

But with every strike, the fragments' influence on Eren grew more apparent. His eyes glowed with an unnatural light, and his attacks became wilder, less controlled.

"Eren, stop!" Liora shouted, fear lacing her voice.

Eren ignored her, his focus entirely on Malrik.

Kael and Liora's Desperate Move

Realizing that Eren was losing himself to the fragments, Kael and Liora acted. Kael charged at Malrik from the side, aiming to break his focus, while Liora fired a volley of arrows to cover him.

Malrik deflected their attacks with a wave of his scythe, but the distraction gave Eren an opening. With a roar, Eren unleashed a devastating strike, the fragments' power surging through his blade and slamming into Malrik's shield.

The impact shattered the shield and sent Malrik stumbling back, a flicker of surprise crossing his masked face.

"You're stronger than I anticipated," Malrik admitted, his tone no longer mocking. "But strength without control is your greatest weakness."

Malrik thrust his hand forward, and a wave of shadow engulfed Eren, pinning him to the ground.

---

The Turning Point

Kael and Liora rushed to Eren's side, but Malrik raised his scythe, preparing to deliver the final blow.

"You're nothing but pawns in a game far beyond your comprehension," Malrik said, his voice cold and final. "I will end this now."

As the scythe descended, Liora shouted a single word: "Now!"

From her quiver, she drew an arrow tipped with light—a relic they had recovered earlier in their journey. With practiced precision, she fired the arrow at Malrik's chest.

The arrow struck true, piercing through Malrik's armor and erupting in a burst of radiant energy. The dark lord staggered, his scythe dissipating as he clutched his chest.

"You dare...?" Malrik growled, his voice filled with rage and pain.

Kael seized the moment, pulling Eren to his feet. "We need to retreat! Now!"

---

A Narrow Escape

The chamber began to collapse, the spire reacting violently to the damage inflicted on its master. The group fled, dodging falling debris and surges of chaotic energy.

Eren stumbled, his strength drained by the fragments' overuse. Kael hoisted him over his shoulder, while Liora led the way, her sharp eyes finding the safest path through the chaos.

Behind them, Malrik's enraged roar echoed through the collapsing spire. "You cannot escape me! You will face me again!"

They barely made it out as the spire crumbled into a heap of shattered stone and dark energy.

---

Aftermath

The group collapsed in the dunes outside the spire, their breaths ragged and their bodies bruised.

Liora turned to Eren, her voice trembling. "You almost got yourself killed. You can't keep relying on the fragments like that."

Eren didn't respond, his eyes fixed on the horizon. The fragments in his possession pulsed faintly, their whispers quieter but still present.

Kael placed a hand on Eren's shoulder. "She's right. We're in this together, but you have to trust us."

Eren looked at them, his expression unreadable. Finally, he nodded. "We need to move. Malrik isn't dead. He'll come after us."

The group rose, their resolve renewed but their unity tested. The battle had shown them the cost of their quest—and the dangers that lay ahead.
