Chapter 2 - Voluntary

Femcel is short for "female incels". Think of them as the female version of incels (involuntary celibates), but with a twist. While incels often get a bad rap for their more aggressive attitudes, femcels are usually just sitting around feeling like they missed the romance bus—like, they were at the bus stop, but the bus just never showed up. Femcels mostly hang out in online spaces which are breeding grounds for exposure to more depressing content, for example, when they see a cute couple sharing their experiences, or say, a harmless cute video; normies would look at it and their heart would swell with affection and happiness. But these girls? Hate would begin to pour into their hate just from the sight of any girl enjoying her time, envying her, wishing she would be in her place. They're not out there plotting revenge against society; instead, they're more likely to be rotting at home watching some old 2000's anime self inserting as the happy pink-haired main character anime girl or something.

A short squirrel gazed deep into Laila's eyes, frozen mid-bite on an acorn. They were both frozen—one out of fear, the other out of confusion about where the heck she was. Laila stomped her feet, shooing it away.

"Okay, this is definitely not my room.", she muttered, looking around at the vibrant, surreal landscape that surrounded her. The colors were more vivid than anything she had seen on her computer screen. Towering trees with luminescent leaves swayed gently in a breeze that felt almost alive. The ground was carpeted with soft, glowing green grass that pulsed like a heartbeat under her feet along the wind. As she took in her surroundings, a familiar sensation washed over her—an exhilarating mix of dread and excitement. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes taking in the moment.

This was ONI Online.

"Layla?", she called out hesitantly, and to her surprise, her avatar appeared beside her in a flash of blinding light. The elf archer looked just as fierce and confident as ever as it rotated, with her flowing green hair and piercing blue eyes. Laila couldn't help but feel a swell of pride; this was the version of herself she had always wanted to be!

"Welcome back, Player!", a cheerful voice chimed from nowhere and everywhere at once. It was the System's voice—the same one that had guided her through the Trial of Resolve, and the one that guided her in the beginning tutorial.

"You have successfully crossed into the Realm of ONI! Your journey begins now."
