Chapter 2 - Chapter Two

Lisandra wandered through the ruins of her village, the weight of her grief pressing down on her like a suffocating shroud. The night had grown cold, and the once warm and welcoming village was now an icy expanse of desolation. She stumbled over the rubble of what had once been her home, numb with shock. The familiar landmarks were unrecognizable, just charred remains and twisted metal.

The night sky was clear, and the stars in the heavens seemed indifferent to the suffering below them. Lisandra's heart ached with every step she took. She had no destination, only the faint hope of finding something — someone — familiar in the wreckage of her life.

As she walked on, she noticed a flickering movement amidst the rubble. Her breath caught in her throat as she saw a figure emerge from the shadows. The figure was crouched, rummaging through the remains of a once thriving marketplace.

Lisandra's heart pounded as she approached, and she fervently hoped it was the person she suspected.

"Athena?" Lisandra's voice broke out in a mixture of hope and disbelief. She stepped closer and tried to see through the darkness with her eyes.

The figure froze, then slowly turned to face her. Athena's face was dirty and tear-stained, her once beautiful features marked by the horrors she had witnessed. Her eyes, wide with shock and recognition, met Lisandra's.

"Lisandra?" Athena's voice was barely a whisper, as if speaking too loudly might destroy the fragile moment.

She took a tentative step forward, her face a mask of disbelief.

"Is it really you?"

Lisandra rushed into Athena's arms; the familiar embrace was balm for her wounded soul. She clung to her, tears streaming down her face. Athena's presence was like a lifeline in the sea of despair that surrounded her.

"I thought I'd lost you," Lisandra sobbed into Athena's shoulder.

"I thought… I thought everyone was gone." Athena's arms tightened around Lisandra, her own tears seeping into Lisandra's hair.

"I'm here," she said in a trembling voice.

"I am here. We survived."

They moved slightly away from each other, their eyes searching each other's faces for reassurance. Athena's gaze softened as she looked at Lisandra's disheveled appearance.

"We have to get out of here," she said urgently.

"There could be more soldiers. We need to find a safe place."

Lisandra nodded, though her heart was heavy. The village was a graveyard of memories, and every step through it was a painful reminder of what she had lost. They moved carefully, each step reflecting the weight of their shared grief.

As they walked on, Lisandra thought of the suffering she had witnessed — the rape of her sisters, the lifeless bodies of her family and friends. "Athena," she began in a barely audible voice, "I don't know what to do next. They took everything from us."

"Shh," Athena interrupted her gently.

"We don't need to talk about it yet. Let's find a safe place first. We'll figure it all out together."

Lisandra swallowed hard and nodded. She knew Athena was right. They had to survive before they could come to terms with the full extent of their loss.

They found a small cave on the outskirts of the village, its entrance hidden by overgrown foliage.

It was a modest shelter that offered some protection from the elements and possible threats. Inside, they lit a small fire, the warmth of which provided a stark contrast to the cold night air.

As the fire crackled, they sat close together, seeking solace in each other's presence. The silence between them was heavy, laden with the unsaid. Athena reached out and took Lisandra's hand in her own.

"We'll get through this," Athena said quietly.

"I promise."

Lisandra looked into Athena's eyes, which reflected the same pain. "How did you survive?" she asked in a trembling voice.

"I was hiding," Athena explained, her voice breaking.

"I was in the forest gathering herbs when the attack happened. I heard the screams, but I couldn't get back in time. I saw everything from the edge of the trees, but I couldn't get to you."

A sob escaped Lisandra's lips as she remembered the moments she had spent hiding, helpless and trapped.

"I saw everything," she said, her voice choked with emotions.

 "My family… ... my sisters… ... they're gone."

Athena's eyes filled with tears as she pulled Lisandra into a tight embrace. "I'm so sorry," she whispered, "I wish I could have been there. I wish I could have saved them."

Lisandra clung to Athena and drew strength from her presence.

"I have to do something," she said in a firm voice despite the tears.

"I have to make them pay for what they've done."Athena pulled back slightly and looked at Lisandra with a mixture of concern and determination.

"You can't do this alone," she said, "We have to be smart about this. We need to make a plan."

"I know," Lisandra said, her voice becoming calmer.

"But I can't just sit here. I have to fight. For my family. For everyone we have lost."

Athena nodded; her expression determined.

"We'll fight together," she said.

"But we have to hide and gather our strength first. There's no point in rushing headlong into danger."

The fire cast a warm glow on their faces, a small comfort in the midst of their devastation. Lisandra knew that the road ahead would be long and full of danger.

"I'm glad you're here," Lisandra said softly, her voice full of gratitude.

"I don't think I would have made it without you."

Athena's smile was sad, but genuine.

"We'll get through this together."

As they sat in the cave, the fire crackling softly, Lisandra and Athena drew strength from each other. The pain of their loss was immeasurable, but so was the bond that bound them together.
