Chapter 1: The Beginning of the End
---
Aura sat in her high school classroom, gazing out the window, her mind far away from the lecture. The ticking of the clock seemed louder than usual, each second counting down to something unknown. She wasn't listening to the biology teacher's lecture about basic human anatomy; instead, her mind was occupied with thoughts of the world outside—the world that seemed so normal, yet beneath the surface, something sinister was beginning to stir.
"You really believe that?" a voice suddenly interrupted her thoughts. Aura turned to see a classmate, Mark, who often seemed like the kind of guy who knew things others didn't. He was a bit of an outcast, often picked on by the others for his bizarre theories and offbeat comments.
"Believe what?" Aura asked, genuinely curious.
Mark leaned forward, his eyes serious. "Zombies. The undead. They're real. You just wait. The zombie virus is coming, and when it does, humanity will be wiped out. It's only a matter of time before it happens."
Aura laughed, shaking her head. "Come on, Mark. That's just a fantasy. Zombies are from movies and comics. We're in real life, not some horror flick."
Her classmates snickered around her, joining in on the laughter. But Mark didn't back down. Instead, his eyes darkened with a fervent intensity.
"No," he said, voice low but urgent. "You'll see. This virus... it's already out there. It's just waiting to spread. When it does, you'll wish you listened. People will turn. They'll start killing each other. And there won't be a cure."
Aura felt a chill run down her spine as she met Mark's gaze. His words felt too real, too serious.
The teacher, Mr. Finch, chuckled from the front of the room. "Mark, you've been watching too many horror movies. There's no such thing as zombies. Stop filling your head with nonsense."
But Mark didn't flinch. He simply nodded, stood up, and walked out of the room without a word. Aura couldn't help but feel a lingering unease in the air. It was the way he said it. The certainty in his tone.

Present Day:
A deafening roar of engines broke the silence. Aura stood at the edge of the camp, watching as the helicopters flew overhead, a constant reminder of the chaos that had taken over the world. CAMP B was a small island of hope in a world slowly being consumed by madness. The zombie virus had spread faster than anyone had anticipated. The military had lost control. And now, the few remaining survivors had to fight for every day they could stay alive.
She glanced down at her younger sister, Grace, who was crouched next to her, drawing pictures in the dirt. Grace was a tough little girl, always quick-witted and sharp for her age, but Aura could see the weight of the world in her eyes. The innocence of childhood had been stolen from her a long time ago.
"Aura, look!" Grace said, pointing excitedly at something in the distance. Aura followed her gaze, and her eyes narrowed as she spotted Chris, one of the refugees from CAMP B, walking toward them. He was strong, handsome, and always managed to make Aura's heart skip a beat. But it wasn't just his looks that drew her to him—there was something in his eyes that told her he, too, was fighting for survival.
"Hey, you two," Chris said with a grin as he reached them. "Everything okay?"
Aura nodded, though her mind was elsewhere. "We're fine. Just waiting for the next wave of supplies."
Chris sighed and shook his head. "I don't think we can keep this up for much longer. The zombies are getting closer every day."
Aura felt a pang in her chest. She had heard the rumors. The military was pulling out, retreating to safer zones, leaving the survivors to fend for themselves. There was talk of a "Safety Zone"—a rumored safe haven on ships far from the land, but no one knew if it was real or just another fantasy.
She looked at Chris, trying to find reassurance in his eyes, but all she saw was the same uncertainty that had clouded her thoughts for weeks.
"Aura, I'm scared," Grace whispered, looking up at her big sister. "What if the zombies come here?"
Aura bent down, gently lifting Grace into her arms. "Don't worry, Grace. We'll be okay. As long as we stick together, we'll survive."
Just then, a loud crash echoed through the camp. The gates of CAMP B shuddered as something large slammed against the barricade. Zombies. More of them.
Aura felt a cold rush of adrenaline. She turned to Chris. "We need to reinforce the barricade. Now."
Chris nodded and ran off, shouting orders to the other refugees. The camp, always under threat, had become a place of constant vigilance. Everyone had a role to play.
As Aura turned toward the gates, she felt something shift within her. The fear, the uncertainty—it had been replaced by something else. A feeling of power. Of readiness.
Aura wasn't just a survivor anymore. She was a force to be reckoned with.
