Chapter 1 - ~

A native born Glixan, the space faring mercenary for hire flew across two galaxies to get to the Outlands. Tales of these 'Apex Legends' amused him. Was he not a legend himself? Was Zedo's name truly unknown throughout space and time, his many deeds tragically overlooked by the public eye?

No matter, he thought as he strolled leisurely behind his assigned teammates, two Human soldiers with the curious names of Bangalore and Mirage, as they carefully infiltrated the bottom floor of a tall, rectangular tower. Everyone will know soon enough.

He stood there watching as one of his allies opened the door and leaned to the side while the other clicked something attached to its wrist, which turned out to be a useful piece of technology Zedo had only encountered a handful of times. A replicated hologram leapt forth and strode through the open doorway. Mirage chuckled expectantly as an assorted barrage of gunfire tore the hologram to static.

"Looks like we've got ourselves a winner!" he announced as he swapped his Hemlock for a P2020.

As if in response, Bangalore backed away from the door, lifted a blocky, metal tube onto her shoulder, and launched a canister inside. Seconds later, the interior of the room was filled with thick white smoke that even Zedo's enhanced vision couldn't pierce. Quick as a flash, she put the launcher away and pulled out an EVA-8. And just in time too.

A large man in a yellow lab coat came stumbling out of the room, gripping the door hinge for support as he waved at the smoke with his free hand. Without word or warning, Bangalore sent a deadly figure-eight spray of double ought buck right through the center of his face. Unfortunately for the stranger, she was a generous woman. She continued to feed him live shells until there was nothing but a deathbox at her feet.

"Moving in," Mirage reported, taking slow, careful steps inside, entering the building at a low crouch. He had his P2020 held out in front of him in both hands.

"I'm right behind you," Bangalore declared. "Just take it slow and don't stand up. Wouldn't want to accidentally blow your head off."

Zedo was about to follow them when something caught his attention. He could have sworn a piece of the hillside had just moved, but thought that maybe his mind was playing tricks on him. They were in a massive battle royale. Here was the place where paranoia would keep a wary soldier alive as much as it would turn every moving shadow and every sapling in the distance into a possible target. Fear of death could play with one's mind in funny ways. He squinted, scanning. That's when he noticed a woman in a cut-off camouflage shirt and matching pants holding a rifle, aiming directly at him.

Even as Zedo ducked and ran to hug the wall directly adjacent to the open double doors for cover and dear life, he could hear the sound of a single energy round slam into the metal staircase behind him. Bangalore and Mirage were already engaged with the enemies hunkered down inside. Zedo thought of radioing it in, but shrugged it off. Why bother? He saw no need to distract them from the task at hand. The Glixan grenadier grinned wide as the woman in camo calmly approached the building with her goons lumbering in tow.

I'll handle this myself.
