Chereads / Bearer of the Abyss / Chapter 20 - Divided Loyalties

Chapter 20 - Divided Loyalties

The return to the adventurer district brought no respite for Jisoo and his companions. The stabilization of the Rift in the Sable Hollow had been a hard-won victory, but the cost of their actions was becoming increasingly clear. The tension in the air had thickened, with factions within the guilds openly debating their next moves.

Kalix perched on a lamppost outside the Iron Fang Guild Hall, his wings twitching nervously. "You feel that, master? It's like the whole district's sitting on a powder keg."

Leah adjusted her hammer, her eyes scanning the streets. "The Order's propaganda is working. They're turning fear into fuel, and it's spreading faster than we can stabilize these Rifts."

Hana's voice was low, but her words cut through the unease. "Then we show them the truth. If the guilds see what the Abyss is really about, they'll understand why we're doing this."

Jisoo adjusted the Abyssal Vein Fragment in his bag, its pulse faint but insistent. "We need more than words. The fragments are leading us somewhere, but until we figure out their purpose, we're fighting blind."

The tension came to a head during an emergency meeting of the guild leaders, called by Yuna to address the growing divisions. The central hall of the Iron Fang Guild was packed with adventurers, their expressions ranging from wary to outright hostile.

Yuna stood at the head of the room, her voice commanding as she addressed the crowd. "We are on the brink of collapse. The Rifts are destabilizing faster than ever, and the Order of Severance is exploiting our fear to divide us. If we don't act together, we'll lose everything."

Jeong stepped forward, his silver armor gleaming under the lantern light. "And what would you have us do? Follow Jisoo and his Abyssal fragments into the unknown? Every step he takes brings us closer to corruption."

Kalix snorted from his perch on Jisoo's shoulder. "Oh, please. Master's done more to stabilize these Rifts than anyone else here. Maybe you should thank him instead of flapping your gums."

The room erupted into a cacophony of voices, some shouting in agreement, others decrying Kalix's words as proof of Abyssal influence. Hana's sharp voice cut through the chaos. "Enough! The Order wants us at each other's throats. Every second we waste arguing is another second the Rifts grow more unstable."

Jeong's smirk faded, replaced by a calculating expression. "And when the Abyss takes him? When it turns on all of us? What will you do then?"

Jisoo stepped forward, his voice calm but firm. "The Abyss isn't the enemy. It's a part of the balance that keeps our world intact. Destroying it would bring chaos. If we work together, we can stabilize the Rifts and uncover the truth before it's too late."

The room fell silent, the weight of his words hanging in the air. Yuna seized the moment. "We have no time for fear and division. The next Rift is already active, and it's more dangerous than anything we've faced. If we don't act now, there won't be a guild left to fight for."

After the meeting, Jisoo and his team gathered in their quarters to review the details of the next Rift. The reports painted a grim picture: the Rift was located in the Ebon Cradle, a desolate region known for its treacherous terrain and hostile creatures.

Hana traced a route on the map with her finger. "The Cradle is a natural stronghold. If the Order gets there before us, they could fortify their position and make it nearly impossible to reach the Rift Core."

Leah leaned against the wall, her hammer resting by her side. "Then we hit them hard and fast. We can't give them time to dig in."

Kalix perched on the edge of the table, his grin returning. "Sounds like a party. I'll bring the fireworks."

Jisoo studied the map, his brow furrowed. The Abyssal fragments in his bag pulsed faintly, their energy aligning with the Cradle's location. "The fragments are guiding us. Whatever's in the Cradle, it's important. We need to be ready for anything."

The trek to the Ebon Cradle was grueling, the team navigating jagged cliffs and shadowed valleys under an ominous sky. The air grew heavier with each step, the faint hum of the Rift's energy resonating in their ears.

Leah paused at the edge of a ravine, her sharp eyes scanning the path ahead. "Looks clear, but that doesn't mean much. The Order's been getting better at hiding their traps."

Hana nodded, her sword drawn and ready. "Stay sharp. If they're here, we can't let them catch us off guard."

As they descended into the Cradle, the terrain shifted, the ground beneath their boots turning black and brittle. The Rift Core came into view, a swirling vortex of Abyssal energy surrounded by jagged spires. Figures moved near the Core—Order operatives, their cloaked forms working to construct defensive barriers.

"They're already here," Jisoo said, his voice low but firm. "We need to move fast."

The team launched their attack with precision. Leah's hammer crashed into the first barrier, shattering it in a burst of energy. Kalix flitted above, raining fireballs down on the Order's ranks and scattering their formation.

Hana moved with deadly grace, her blade cutting through the operatives as they scrambled to regroup. Jisoo focused on the Rift Core, raising the Warden's Eclipse Staff to channel the fragments' power. The Core's chaotic energy lashed out, forcing him to dodge and refocus.

"Keep them off me!" Jisoo shouted, his voice strained as he began stabilizing the Rift.

Leah and Hana fought back-to-back, their coordinated strikes keeping the Order at bay. Kalix darted through the chaos, his fireballs disrupting the operatives' attempts to counterattack.

System Notification: "Dungeon Detected: Ebon Cradle." "Level: 24-30. Objective: Stabilize the Rift Core." "Additional Challenge: Destroy the Order's Reinforcement Beacon."

As the battle raged, a towering Abyssal Titan emerged from the Rift, its molten eyes blazing with fury. The ground shook as it advanced, its massive form dwarfing everything around it.

"New plan!" Kalix shouted, his grin faltering. "Big guy incoming!"

Leah gripped her hammer tightly. "Hana, with me! We take it down before it reaches Jisoo!"

Hana nodded, her eyes narrowing as she charged toward the Titan. The creature let out a deafening roar, its claws carving through the ground as it swung at the approaching warriors.

Jisoo poured his energy into the Rift Core, the fragments pulsing in harmony with the vortex. Sweat dripped down his face as the Core's chaotic energy began to settle, its violent tendrils receding.

"Almost there," Jisoo muttered, his voice tight with concentration. "Just a little more…."

The Abyssal Titan roared, its molten claws gouging deep furrows into the brittle ground of the Ebon Cradle. Each step it took sent tremors rippling through the battlefield, and its blazing eyes locked onto Jisoo. The Rift Core's chaotic energy pulsed wildly, as if feeding off the Titan's fury.

"Keep it away from Jisoo!" Hana shouted, her blade flashing as she darted toward the Titan's flank. "Leah, aim for its legs! We need to bring it down!"

Leah gritted her teeth, gripping her hammer tightly. "On it!" she roared, charging forward. Her hammer slammed into the Titan's knee joint with a resounding crack, sending shards of molten rock scattering across the ground. The creature staggered but quickly regained its balance, swinging a massive claw toward her.

Leah barely rolled out of the way, the claw smashing into the ground where she had stood moments before.

Kalix darted above the fray, his wings a blur as he hurled fireballs at the Titan's head. "Hey, big guy! Over here!" he taunted. The fireballs burst harmlessly against the creature's obsidian armor, but they succeeded in drawing its attention away from Jisoo.

Jisoo's hands trembled as he channeled the Abyssal fragments' energy into the Rift Core. The chaotic vortex lashed out with tendrils of shadow and fire, each one a test of his focus and resolve. Sweat dripped down his face as he poured more mana into the fragments, aligning their resonance with the Core's unstable rhythm.

"Hold steady," he muttered, his voice tight. "Just a little longer…."

The Core's energy began to slow, its tendrils retracting as the fragments exerted their stabilizing influence. But the Titan's proximity disrupted the process, its roars and stomping feet causing the Core to pulse erratically.

"Jisoo!" Kalix shouted from above. "We're running out of distractions here!"

System Notification: "Rift Stabilization at 75%." "Warning: External Interference Detected."

Hana leapt onto the Titan's arm, her blade striking at the joints where molten rock met obsidian plating. The creature roared, shaking its arm violently in an attempt to dislodge her. Hana held on, driving her sword deeper into the joint until a burst of molten energy erupted from the wound.

"Leah, now!" Hana shouted, leaping clear as the Titan staggered backward.

Leah charged forward, her hammer glowing faintly with Abyssal energy. She swung with all her strength, striking the Titan's other leg. The blow shattered the joint, sending the creature crashing to the ground in a shower of molten debris.

"Got it!" Leah yelled, her grin fierce. "Jisoo, finish the Core!"

Jisoo focused all his energy on the Rift Core, his staff glowing as the fragments resonated in perfect harmony. The chaotic energy within the Core began to stabilize, its violent pulses giving way to a steady, calming glow.

System Notification: "Rift Stabilized." "Objective Complete: Ebon Cradle Rift Secured." "Additional Challenge Complete: Abyssal Titan Neutralized." "Rewards: 6,000 Experience Points, Abyssal Titan Fragment, Title: Conqueror of the Cradle."

The battlefield fell silent as the Titan's remains dissolved into motes of light, leaving only the stabilized Rift Core and the faint glow of the Abyssal Titan Fragment. Jisoo retrieved the fragment, its surface etched with swirling patterns of molten fire and shadow.

Leah leaned on her hammer, her breathing heavy but triumphant. "Another Rift down. The Order's going to be furious about this one."

Hana sheathed her sword, her gaze steady. "Let them come. Every time they fail, they show the guilds that they're the real threat, not the Abyss."

Kalix landed on Jisoo's shoulder, his grin returning. "Not bad, master. But next time, how about we don't invite a walking volcano to the party?"

Jisoo slipped the fragment into his bag, his resolve firm. "The Abyss is leading us somewhere. Whatever comes next, we'll be ready."

Back at the adventurer district, the Iron Fang Guild Hall buzzed with the news of the Ebon Cradle's stabilization. Supporters of Jisoo's efforts began to speak out more openly, challenging the Order's narrative and rallying others to the cause.

Yuna met them as they entered the hall, her expression a mix of relief and urgency. "The Order's not going to take this defeat lightly. They've already started spreading new rumors about your team and the Abyssal fragments."

Leah scowled. "Let them talk. We'll back up our actions with results."

Hana nodded. "Every Rift we stabilize proves them wrong. But we can't let our guard down. The next one will be even harder."

Jisoo placed the Abyssal Titan Fragment on the table, its energy faint but steady. "The fragments are part of something bigger. We need to find out what before the Order figures it out first."

Yuna's gaze hardened. "Then we move quickly. The next Rift has already been identified—and it's in a location we never expected."

As the team prepared for their next mission, the glow of the stabilized Rift lingered in their minds, a beacon of hope against the rising tide of chaos.
