Inside the pipe system, Link's voice mixed with the howling wind, creating an imposing and almost indescribable grandeur that pierced Ekko's heart.
Ekko, who had grown up scraping by in Zaun, had seen all sorts of bizarre things. But the scene before him left him stunned, unable to react. A strange sense of awe spread through him, sending shivers up his spine and raising goosebumps all over.
"Heimerdinger... What is this all about?"
Confused, Ekko instinctively turned to Heimerdinger, the greatest mind among those he knew.
"My goodness, Janna has returned."
Heimerdinger's eyes widened in shock, mirroring Ekko's disbelief.
"Wait, what did you say?" Ekko asked, bewildered.
"I said—" Heimerdinger pointed at Link, cloaked and surrounded by howling wind, then turned back to Ekko, exclaiming, "Janna has returned!"
"But isn't Janna just a bedtime story to scare children?" Ekko, a staunch believer in science, found the situation before him hard to grasp.
"To you, she might be just a story," Heimerdinger replied, his large ears trembling slightly. "But to me, twenty-six years ago, Janna was very real."
Heimerdinger continued, "Back when Piltover didn't have ventilation systems, Zaun relied on Janna's protection to survive the smog and pollution. Miners trapped in collapsed tunnels, people suffocating in the haze, and even lost wanderers—Janna saved them all. But her tales abruptly ended twenty-six years ago."
"And now, with her reappearance, this is groundbreaking news!" Heimerdinger declared, his tone rising with excitement. "Big news, child, big news!"
Turning to Link, Heimerdinger bowed slightly. "I salute you, esteemed emissary of the goddess."
"And I salute you, wise scholar," Link replied, bowing his head. Meanwhile, Janna ceased her gusts of wind and perched on Link's shoulder, panting from the effort. Although exhausted from using her weakened powers, she maintained a calm exterior, preening her feathers with a nonchalant air.
Ekko, however, couldn't shake off his skepticism. "Alright, so why are you here?" he asked cautiously, keeping his distance from Link, whose immense strength unnerved him.
"To warn and advise," Link's voice, muffled by his mask, carried an otherworldly tone that heightened his mystique.
"My goddess, Janna, awoke from her slumber due to an impending crisis. She chose me as her emissary, the one to walk the earth and convey her will."
Janna glanced at Link, her gaze filled with incredulity. In all her years, she'd never encountered an emissary quite like this one—Link was truly one of a kind.
"And what is her will?" Ekko pressed.
"To warn you—" The six red stones embedded in Link's helmet glowed ominously, "Cancel your trip to Piltover and return to your base. Do not proceed."
"Wait, what do you mean by 'do not proceed'? Do you even know why we're going to Piltover?"
"You're seeking a solution to save your home, the great tree that sustains your community, which has been corrupted, correct?"
Heimerdinger gasped. "My word, he knows everything!"
"Since you know, why are you stopping us?" Ekko demanded.
"Because if you continue, the consequences will be disastrous," Link warned, his arm emerging from beneath his cloak to rest on Heimerdinger's shoulder, though his gaze was fixed on Ekko.
"He will die for you after a thousand days and nights of waiting," Link declared ominously, causing Heimerdinger and Ekko to exchange uneasy glances.
"And you," Link continued, now pointing at Ekko, "will sacrifice the most beautiful moments of your life to return to a world of calamity."
"You're just fearmongering!" Ekko retorted, refusing to believe Link's words. "What do you expect us to do? Sit idly by and watch our home collapse?"
"You have the choice not to listen," Link replied. "But know that Heimerdinger will perish for your sake, and you will face unimaginable pain and regret."
Link outlined a grim future: the destruction of Ekko's companions, the disbanding of his group, and the ultimate collapse of their home, followed by an endless cycle of war and despair.
Ekko's face darkened as he absorbed Link's words.
Seeing Ekko's hesitation, Heimerdinger stepped in, pulling Ekko aside. "Ekko, don't be rash," he whispered. "This man is an emissary of the gods. His perspective and priorities differ from ours."
Heimerdinger explained, "If you push him, he might truly incapacitate you."
"What do you suggest, then?" Ekko asked, still unwilling to back down.
"Let's work with him. Ask for his help," Heimerdinger suggested.
Turning back to Link, Heimerdinger bowed again. "Honored emissary, we are willing to heed Janna's warning. However, our home is under threat. Could we... ask for your assistance?"
"I will help," Link replied, deactivating the device in his hand. "Your tree has been corrupted by Hextech energy. I will prepare an antidote and deal with the source of the corruption."
Relieved, Heimerdinger expressed his gratitude, nudging Ekko to do the same. Ekko muttered begrudgingly, "Thanks."
After agreeing to meet in three days to deliver the antidote, Link handed Ekko an additional task: "As the leader of the Firelight gang, intervene in Zaun's current turmoil. Without Silco, the Chem-Barons are unchecked, which is destabilizing the city."
