Aurélie couldn't shake off the feeling that Max was hiding something from her. She tried to brush it off as mere paranoia, but the seed of doubt had been planted.
As the days went by, Aurélie noticed that Max was becoming increasingly distant. He would receive mysterious phone calls, and then suddenly have to leave the room. He would be vague about his whereabouts, and Aurélie couldn't help but feel like he was lying to her.
One night, Aurélie decided to confront Max about her suspicions. "Max, what's going on?" she asked, her voice firm but shaking slightly. "You've been acting strange lately, and I feel like you're hiding something from me."
Max looked taken aback, but then his expression changed to one of calmness. "Aurélie, I don't know what you're talking about," he said, his voice smooth as silk. "I'm just stressed with work, that's all."
Aurélie didn't believe him. She knew Max too well, and she could see the guilt written all over his face.
Just then, Max's phone rang, and he hesitated before answering it. Aurélie's heart sank as she saw the look of fear in Max's eyes.
"Who is it?" Aurélie demanded, her voice rising.
Max hesitated before answering. "It's...it's my publisher," he stammered.
