Chapter 57 - A Dangerous Encounter

The hallway seemed to narrow as Raine's gaze locked onto Professor Callista. Her eyes, sharp and calculating, fixed on him with an intensity that made the hairs on the back of his neck rise. There was no warmth in her expression—only a deep, unspoken scrutiny. Her posture was rigid, and her lips were pressed into a thin line, as if she were waiting for something.

Raine took a steadying breath, trying to maintain his calm. He had dealt with many challenges since arriving at the academy, but this… this felt different. Callista wasn't just any professor; she was the head of the Beast Taming Tower. Her influence was vast, and her knowledge of mystical creatures was unmatched. If anyone could sense the presence of a legendary beast, it would be her.

For a brief moment, Raine considered making a quick escape, but he knew that wasn't an option. Callista had a way of tracking him, of knowing where he was at all times. Avoiding her would only make things worse.

"Raine Evernight Valthorn," Professor Callista's voice sliced through the silence, low and steady. "I trust you're aware of the… unique situation you find yourself in."

Raine's grip on his magic tightened, though he kept his expression neutral. "I'm not sure I understand what you mean, Professor."

Callista's eyes flickered with something between curiosity and caution. "Don't play coy with me, young man. You've done something remarkable today. It's rare for someone to form such a connection with a beast, let alone one of that caliber. But this isn't just about the tournament, is it?"

Raine swallowed. His instincts told him she was far more perceptive than most, perhaps more than anyone realized. The serpent he had tamed was no ordinary creature—it was an ancient being, a legendary one. If she sensed even a fraction of its power, it would only be a matter of time before others did too. And then, everything would change.

"It's about understanding," Raine said, his voice smooth but tinged with the weight of the situation. "Sometimes, beasts aren't just creatures to be conquered or tamed. They're partners. Allies."

Callista narrowed her eyes, studying him intently. She had been in the academy for years, watching countless students come and go, yet there was something about Raine that intrigued her. His cold, calculating nature, his unshakable resolve, and his unwillingness to show weakness in front of her. It was rare to find a student with such a level of control at such a young age.

"Don't be naive, Raine," she said, her tone firm. "You may have tamed a beast, but there are forces beyond this academy that would kill to control it. You've attracted attention—attention that may not be so easily shaken off."

Raine's pulse quickened, but he refused to let it show. He wasn't a fool. He had known the risks of taming a creature like that. The serpent was no ordinary beast—it was powerful, and its power would attract the wrong kind of people. But what choice did he have? It was his trump card, his key to proving the worth of Beast Taming magic. If he could control the serpent, if he could prove his abilities, he would rise above the limitations of his past. But that came with a price.

"I know the risks," Raine said, his voice low and deliberate. "But I also know the rewards."

Professor Callista raised an eyebrow. "You think you can control it? A creature of that power? One that has lived for centuries, perhaps longer?"

"I don't think," Raine replied, his gaze unwavering. "I know."

Callista's lips twitched, as if she were about to respond, but she stopped herself. There was something about Raine that unsettled her. He was ambitious, yes—but there was a coldness to him, an emptiness in his eyes that made her wonder what lengths he was willing to go to for his goals.

"You're playing a dangerous game," she said quietly. "And if you're not careful, you'll find yourself entangled in something much darker than you're prepared for."

"I've faced danger before," Raine said, his voice steady. "And I'll face it again."

There was a long pause. Callista seemed to consider her next words carefully. Finally, she spoke again, her voice softer but still laced with authority.

"I'm not here to stop you, Raine. But I do want you to understand the consequences of your actions. If that beast is what I think it is, then you've just set a series of events in motion that cannot be undone. You're no longer just a student of the Beast Taming Tower. You're a target."

Raine's eyes narrowed, but his voice remained calm. "I can handle the consequences."

Callista studied him one last time before giving a slow nod. "We'll see, won't we?"

Without another word, she turned and walked away, her footsteps echoing in the quiet hall. Raine stood still, his thoughts racing. He knew she wasn't lying. The serpent he had tamed was a powerful creature, and it would attract all kinds of attention. There were forces in the kingdom that would stop at nothing to control it.

But Raine was ready. He had been planning for this moment, building his power and influence, knowing that someday, he would need to face the consequences of his actions. Now that time had come.

He couldn't back down.

With a deep breath, Raine turned and walked in the opposite direction, heading back to his dorm. His mind was already racing with possibilities, strategies, and plans. He would need to be even more careful now. He had made a powerful ally, but he had also made enemies.

And enemies had a way of finding you when you least expected it.
