Chereads / Demon Hunter Skraye / Chapter 2 - Fortress

Chapter 2 - Fortress

This was the first and last time I felt euphoric, throwing punches into the air for what felt like an eternity. Then I stopped, huffing violently.

Huff.

Huff.

Huff.

I unbuttoned my polo, revealing my sleeveless shirt underneath as I caught my breath.

What do I even expect? It's been a long time since I've had shadow box.

Thirst washed over me. My stomach growled as I glanced at the water dispenser.

I strolled toward the water dispenser. Lacking a cup, I leaned down and drank directly from the spout.

There's no cup nearby, alright? Either way, when your life is at risk, there's no reason to worry about morals.

Now that I'm well-hydrated, I need to find something to eat to satisfy my hunger. I swiftly strode to the white door (located besides row 1), passing rows of computers besides. Hoping to find food or whatever I could find useful for my survival.

The door in the office was solid white, with no window to reveal what lay behind.

I turned the golden knob of the door unhurriedly, I heard it clicking as I unlocked it from being close.

I swung the door ajar, enough for me to see the other side.

I was worried for nothing when I saw the hallway was clear with no sign of any danger detected.

The lights remained off, but daylight streaming through a small window in the end of the hallway was enough to illuminate the room.

Aside from the window at the end, there's also a stair to descend, leading to the first floor.

It looks like they turned it off before they left, leaving me alone while I slumber.

I trudged on the hallway, my heavy breaths echoed against the pale pavements.

The hallway wasn't as far as interesting. It's your average white-painted hallway with a coppery wooden floor covered by a stenchy black carpet extending at the end.

Prior to descending the stairs. I peered out, observing thoroughly. Only the pearl floor was in sight.

Even though the path had no obstacles. My mind still brimmed with doubt as I advanced prudently. I still need to be careful as I go.

I sighed, sharpening my senses with each step I took.

I can't let myself die in this place.

I didn't need to worry about my left side because it's only a pavement as this stair is located at the corner of the first floor.

I glanced to my right, making sure that it was fully safe and not risky. I can get a glimpse of the uncovered windows at this distance. Blood sprouted on and stained it. But needless to say the first floor is quite secured?

If only I could cover it without being seen by those creatures lurking outside.

My fur rose as I landed my foot on the pearl floor in silence. I was captivated by the scent of fresh, lemonade yet sweet smell.

It appears to be the white roses on a vase behind the stair.

"They changed the dead flowers? When?" I whispered, almost laughing at the absurdity of it—I passed by this vase every day, yet I hadn't even noticed.

Anyways, I somehow need to cover that window in order to pass safely. Parallel to the window that I needed to cover was a long wooden table. It was probably enough to cover ¾ of the window.

But there's no way I can push it with my mere strength and use it as cover.

I worked my way back to my office room (2nd floor). Yes, you heard that right. I now claimed this building as my fortress. No one can stop me, can you?

I don't expect others to be alive anyway.

I spent my time wondering how can I cover the window so I could pass it and search the drawer near-but meters away from the vase.

Yet nothing had came out to my mind. Only the voices from my head ordering me to go up and visit God.

Like, yeah if I only could. But I am not easy to give up. My life is a waste if I committed.

I need help.

I opened my computer again. Waiting for it to buffer like before. And quickly pressed down the key to searched.

'D.I.Y Window Cover.'

I only had limited materials here. I spent my next minutes searching for a proper cover that would do it's job.

It took me approximately about 47 minutes finding the right tutorial. The others was so fancy my skill couldn't make it. Kiding aside, I just don't have the right amount of materials in the other videos.

'Materials needed'

•Paper (Preferably thick)

•Masking tape

•String

•Scissors

•Glue

I set the speed of the video to 2x. I don't want to be caught by the twilight, groping around the dark like a superhuman with night vision.

I sprung up from my chair after, made my way at the table with files piling up.

It's never that important now anyway. Never have been.

After I fetch a doubled amount paper needed. I now searched every drawer beneath their desktop to grabbed the other materials needed.

"Jackpot," I said, finding myself in joy while looking at the chocolate bar left on one of the drawers, immediately putting it on my desk. I continued to search for more. No, I mean for the materials I needed. It's only a bonus when I find a couple more.

Finally, I gathered all the materials needed. I'm fortunate that few drawers aren't locked, and the others—I lock-pick them. Hehe.

Quite a few of paper was wasted in the process but I successfully did it. It wasn't fanciest D.I.Y you would see but it would do its the job.

I swiftly descended to the stair, covering each window and securing it with chairs nearby.

I now can searched peacefully! Hooray!

The first thing that caught my eye when I searched was the drawer near the vase—an legitimate ID of my boss.

He probably left it. It's not usable for now. Yet it would probably be useful in the near future.

I fetched the ID, putting it inside the pocket of my trousers. Before lock-picking the drawer—the greatest asset of mine.

I continued the hunt for supplies, from the front desk to the storage area. I found some important things that I can use to survive for a few days—knife, two mp5, ammunition, canned goods. And placed it on the long table.

Don't ask me why the company kept a lot of mp5. I never knew.

I hurried toward the restroom door located beside the front desk. My steps quickening, feeling the urgency to release the liquid from my bladder.

I hurriedly pushed the restroom door open, the hinges creaking under the force. Just as the door swung inward, a piercing scream erupted, freezing me in place and sending a chill down my spine.
