Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Shadow of The Past

After the wraith's defeat, Stanley, Kai, and Leo regrouped in the school courtyard. The oppressive energy was gone, replaced by a tense calm. Night had fallen completely, and the stars above seemed brighter, as if the universe itself had been holding its breath.

Kai leaned against a tree, cleaning his dagger with a casual smirk. "So, that wasn't just any shadow wraith. It was feeding on magic from a source connected to your little fragment."

Stanley looked toward the faint glow emanating from his bag. The Core Crystal fragment pulsed softly, its energy subdued but undeniably present. "Whoever sent the wraith knows about the fragments, and they won't stop here."

Leo crossed his arms, looking uneasy. "You're talking like this is just the start of something worse."

"It is," Stanley said, his tone grave.

Revelations at Dawn

The next morning, Stanley and Kai returned to their temporary base an abandoned cabin on the outskirts of the town. Mia had stayed there while they ventured into the mountains, her role as a scholar invaluable to unraveling the mystery of the Core Crystal.

Inside, Mia was surrounded by stacks of books and glowing runes sketched onto parchment. Her eyes lit up when Stanley and Kai walked in.

"Finally! You're back," she said, standing up. She approached Stanley, her gaze immediately fixating on the bag slung over his shoulder. "Did you find the fragment?"

Stanley nodded and handed it to her. "But we ran into trouble. A shadow wraith ambushed us at the school last night."

Mia's expression darkened. "That explains the surge in dark energy I felt. The fragments are incredibly dangerous on their own. If someone's trying to gather them…"

Stanley finished her thought. "It could plunge the entire world and the universe into chaos."

Mia nodded grimly and placed the fragment on the table, next to an intricate map she had been working on. "There's more. While you were gone, I found an old text that mentions the Core Crystal. It was created by an ancient civilization that sought to control all magic. They shattered it when they realized its power was too great."

Kai raised an eyebrow. "And now someone's trying to piece it back together. Great. That's just what we need."

Mia's Theory

Mia tapped the map, her finger tracing a line between marked locations. "The fragments were scattered across the world, hidden in places infused with natural magic. The one you found was in the mountains, but there are others at least five more."

Stanley frowned. "Do we know where the next one is?"

Mia pointed to a dense forest on the map. "There's a ruin here that matches the descriptions in the text. If I'm right, the next fragment is hidden there."

Kai smirked. "Looks like our adventure's far from over."

Stanley nodded, his resolve firm. "Then we leave at dawn. But we need to be careful if the shadow wraith was any indication, the closer we get to the fragments, the more danger we'll face."

A Quiet Moment

That night, as the others slept, Stanley stood outside the cabin, staring at the stars. He couldn't shake the feeling that something much larger was at play, something even he, the god of the universe, couldn't fully comprehend.

Mia joined him, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders. "Can't sleep?"

Stanley shook his head. "Too much on my mind. The fragments, the enemies chasing us… I'm not sure I can keep everyone safe."

Mia placed a hand on his shoulder. "You've already done more than most people could even dream of. We'll figure this out together."

Her words brought Stanley a sense of calm he hadn't felt in days. "Thanks, Mia."

She smiled. "Get some rest, Stanley. Tomorrow's going to be a long day."

The Journey Resumes

As dawn broke, the group packed their supplies and set off toward the forest marked on Mia's map. The path ahead was uncertain, but Stanley knew one thing for sure: they couldn't afford to fail.

With each step they took, the weight of the universe seemed to press heavier on Stanley's shoulders. But for the first time, he didn't feel alone.
