Chapter 3 - NEW CEO

Fear gripped my heart as I contemplated returning to work. The traumatic events that had unfolded at the company still lingered in my mind, casting a dark shadow over my every waking moment. The thought of facing my colleagues, of walking through those familiar halls, filled me with dread.

What if he came back? What if he tried to harm me again? The questions swirled in my mind like a maelstrom, leaving me breathless and paralyzed.

I had avoided work for a week, unable to shake off the feeling of vulnerability. My sister, worried sick about me, had been pressing for answers, but I couldn't bring myself to reveal the truth.

The weight of responsibility settled heavily on my shoulders. How could I provide for my sister if I didn't have a job? The thought sent a wave of desperation crashing over me.

Just then, my phone rang, shrill in the silence. It was my boss, demanding to know why I hadn't been coming to work. I forced a calm tone, telling him I was on my way.

As I headed to the office, my heart racing with anxiety, I was confronted with the daunting task of facing my fears. The stairs, where it had all happened, seemed to loom over me like a specter.

But I steeled myself and continued on, determined to overcome my phobia. The voting process for the new CEO was underway, and I was determined to participate.

As I scanned the list of candidates, my eyes landed on a few familiar names: Emily Michaelson, Salvator James, Jeffrey Stevin. And then, there were the less familiar ones: Michael, Nicholas.

Something about Nicholas's name caught my attention. It seemed so... unexpected. I wondered why anyone would vote for someone they didn't know.

But as the results were announced, my curiosity turned to shock. Nicholas had won. I felt like I'd been punched in the gut.

And then, he appeared. Nicholas. The man who had garnered the majority of the votes. He walked into the room with an air of confidence, his black suit impeccable, his hair styled perfectly.

As our eyes met, I felt a jolt of electricity run through my body. There was something about him, something that seemed to connect us on a deeper level.

But as I gazed into his brown eyes, I couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to him than met the eye. A mystery lingered beneath the surface, waiting to be uncovered.

I couldn't help but wonder who this enigmatic CEO, Nicholas, really was. Why had he been staring at me with such intensity? I took a step back, feeling a shiver run down my spine, but I was the only person standing there. It was as if he could see right through me.

A sense of unease settled in the pit of my stomach. Did he know me? Was there a connection between us that I was unaware of? I felt a sudden urge to retreat, to put distance between us. Something about him unnerved me, and I couldn't shake the feeling that our paths had crossed before.

But fate, it seemed, had other plans. We were all summoned to the CEO's office the next day, tasked with bringing a gift to welcome him. I felt a pang of resentment; why was I being forced to give a gift to someone I didn't even know?

Reluctantly, I headed to the mall, searching for something, anything, that would suffice. But nothing seemed to catch my attention until I stumbled upon a pair of elegant hand gloves. The price was steep, but something about them drew me in.

As I made my way back home, my mind wandered back to the mysterious CEO. Who was he, really? And what did he want from me?

Just then, my phone rang, shrill in the silence. It was an unknown number, and the voice on the other end sent a chill down my spine. "What happened to you?" the caller asked, their tone laced with concern.

I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. "What do you mean?" I replied, trying to sound nonchalant.

The caller's voice dropped to a whisper. "I haven't seen you at work in a while. And your sister... she's been asking questions."

My heart skipped a beat. Who was this person, and how did they know so much about me?

I thought I'd left my troubles behind, but life had other plans. As I walked into my home, I was greeted by Tasha, who was beaming with joy. She was sitting on the living room couch, and her smile was infectious.

"What's got you so happy?" I asked, curiosity getting the better of me.

She beamed with excitement. "I was crossing the road after school when a car hit me. But the driver, he was so kind. He took me to the hospital, even though I said I was fine."

My eyes widened in surprise. "That's terrible! But I'm glad you're okay."

Tasha nodded enthusiastically. "Yes, and the driver, he was so handsome and rich. He drove a luxurious car, and his clothes were expensive. He even offered me money, but I declined."

I raised an eyebrow. "You declined? Why?"

Tasha shrugged. "I didn't want to take his money. But he insisted on driving me home and promised to meet again soon."

I couldn't help but think that Tasha was being a bit naive. But she seemed so happy, and I didn't want to ruin her mood.

Just then, she asked, "What about your CEO? The one who got elected?"

My mind flashed back to the office, and I felt a flutter in my chest. Nicholas. The mysterious CEO with piercing brown eyes.

Tasha teased, "Will you die if a guy is your CEO?"

I laughed, trying to play it cool. "Maybe a little," I admitted, feeling my cheeks flush.

But the truth was, I was intimidated by Nicholas. There was something about him that made me feel vulnerable, like he could see right through me.
