Chapter 38 - Chapter 37: The Blackstone Expedition

Preparations for the expedition to the Blackstone Ruins were swift but thorough. Leon assembled an elite team for the mission, including Selene, Callista, and a select group of the Vanguard. The goal was clear: uncover what Thane's sorcerer was doing at the ruins and, if possible, put an end to their schemes.

As the sun rose on the day of departure, Leon stood at the gates of the settlement, addressing the gathered soldiers and townsfolk.

"This mission is dangerous," he said, his voice steady. "But it's necessary. What we do today will determine the safety of our home and the future of our kingdom. Trust in one another, and trust in the strength we've built together."

The crowd cheered, their morale bolstered. Leon turned to his team, giving a final nod before they set out.

The Journey to Blackstone

The Blackstone Ruins lay several days' journey to the south, deep in enemy territory. The terrain grew harsher as they traveled, the air thick with tension. Callista occasionally paused to cast protective spells, ensuring they remained hidden from prying eyes.

"Thane's forces are likely patrolling the area," Callista warned as they reached a narrow gorge. "We should proceed with caution."

Selene, always alert, signaled for the group to halt. She scanned the rocky terrain, her sharp eyes catching movement in the shadows.

"There," she whispered, pointing to a ridge above. "Scouts. Probably Thane's creatures."

Leon's hand went to his sword. "How many?"

"Three, maybe four," Selene replied. "But if they spot us, they'll alert others."

Leon thought quickly. "Selene, take them out quietly. We can't risk being discovered."

With a nod, Selene vanished into the shadows, moving like a ghost. Moments later, the faint sound of a blade striking echoed through the gorge. When she returned, her blades were clean, and her expression calm.

"It's done," she said simply.

The group pressed on, navigating the increasingly hostile landscape.

The First Signs of Corruption

As they neared the ruins, the air grew colder, and the ground beneath their feet turned blackened and brittle. Strange, twisted plants with glowing veins lined their path, pulsating with an unnatural energy.

Callista crouched beside one of the plants, her face grim. "This is dark magic at work. The sorcerer's power is seeping into the land itself."

Leon frowned. "Can it be stopped?"

"Only by cutting off the source," Callista said. "And that means confronting the sorcerer directly."

The group exchanged uneasy glances but pressed forward.

The Blackstone Ruins

The ruins came into view at dusk, an eerie silhouette against the fading light. Once a grand structure of black stone and intricate carvings, it now lay in decay, its walls covered in glowing runes and tendrils of dark energy.

Leon signaled for the group to stop. "We'll camp here for the night and move in at first light. Stay alert—this place is crawling with danger."

As they set up camp, Callista took the opportunity to study the runes from a safe distance.

"These symbols are a combination of ancient magic and Thane's corruption," she explained. "The sorcerer is using the ruins as a conduit to amplify their power."

Leon nodded, his resolve hardening. "Then we destroy it. Whatever they're planning ends here."

A Midnight Ambush

The attack came just after midnight.

Selene, keeping watch, spotted movement in the shadows moments before a horde of creatures descended upon the camp.

"To arms!" she shouted, drawing her blades.

The camp erupted into chaos as Leon and the Vanguard scrambled to defend themselves. The creatures were unlike anything they had faced before—twisted humanoids with glowing eyes and claws that dripped with dark energy.

Leon fought at the center of the fray, his sword glowing faintly with Callista's enchantments. Each swing cleaved through the creatures, but for every one he struck down, two more seemed to take its place.

Callista stood at the edge of the camp, chanting a spell. A wave of light radiated from her hands, disintegrating several of the creatures and giving the soldiers a moment to regroup.

"Fall back to the ruins!" Leon shouted. "We can use the walls for cover!"

Inside the Ruins

The group retreated into the ruins, barricading themselves in a large chamber. The creatures did not pursue, instead circling outside like predators stalking their prey.

Callista inspected the chamber, her expression troubled. "This place is steeped in dark magic. We need to find the sorcerer quickly."

Selene, ever vigilant, scouted ahead, returning moments later with grim news. "There's a central chamber deeper inside. It's heavily guarded, but that's where the strongest magic is coming from."

Leon turned to the group. "This is it. We push forward and end this now."

The Final Confrontation

The central chamber was a massive hall, its walls lined with glowing runes. At the center stood a figure cloaked in black, their hands raised as they chanted an ominous incantation. A swirling portal of dark energy loomed above them, crackling with power.

The sorcerer turned as the group entered, their voice echoing with a chilling tone. "You're too late, Leon. The ritual is almost complete. Soon, Lord Thane's power will be unstoppable."

Leon stepped forward, his sword at the ready. "Not if I have anything to say about it."

The sorcerer laughed, raising a hand. The chamber erupted into chaos as creatures poured from the shadows, attacking from all sides.

Leon and Selene fought back-to-back, their movements perfectly synchronized. Callista focused on disrupting the sorcerer's spell, hurling bolts of light that clashed with the dark energy.

As the battle raged, Leon's system activated:

[System Notification: Boss Encounter – Dark Sorcerer of Blackstone]

• Objectives:

1. Defeat the sorcerer.

2. Destroy the dark portal.

• Reward: +50 Kingdom Strength, Unique Artifact, Increased Resistance to Dark Magic.

Leon's blade clashed with the sorcerer's staff as he charged forward. The two engaged in a fierce duel, the sorcerer's magic matching Leon's strength blow for blow.

"Your kingdom will fall, just as countless others have," the sorcerer taunted.

"Not today," Leon growled, driving his sword through the sorcerer's chest.

The sorcerer let out a final scream as their body disintegrated, leaving only a faint shimmer of dark energy behind.

The Aftermath

With the sorcerer defeated, the portal began to collapse, the dark energy dissipating into the air. Callista quickly placed a protective barrier around the group, shielding them from the resulting explosion.

When the dust settled, the ruins were silent.

"It's over," Leon said, his voice heavy with exhaustion.

"For now," Callista replied. "But Thane won't stop. This was only a piece of his plan."

Leon nodded, his resolve unwavering. "Then we'll be ready. Whatever he throws at us next, we'll face it together."
