Chapter 62 - Chapter 62: The Impending Battle

Agent Barton and Parker didn't waste a moment on Carrigan, who was tightly bound. They turned and ran, leaving the enraged demon struggling against the webs.

Carrigan eventually managed to reduce the webs to ash and glared in the direction the two had disappeared. "Damn it! I'll turn you both to dust!"

After running some distance, Barton and Parker finally spotted a car by the roadside.

With practiced ease, Barton unlocked it, displaying the skill of a seasoned professional.

"Damn it. The engine's dead," he said, jumping out of the car and giving the door a frustrated kick.

Pulling out his phone, Barton found the screen completely unresponsive. No matter how hard he tried, it wouldn't power on.

"It seems like the demon's energy is interfering with all electronic devices," Barton said grimly.

"I can't believe demons actually exist," Parker replied. "What do we do now, Agent Barton?"

"This isn't something the two of us can handle alone. First, we need to get farther from here. Once we're out of the interference range, we'll try contacting Director Fury."

After walking over twenty kilometers, they finally left the area affected by the demonic energy, and their phones powered on again.

"Director Fury," Barton reported, "we've located the individual who stole the Tesseract. He seems to be summoning a demon."

"A demon? Are you serious, Agent Barton?" Fury's voice dripped with skepticism.

"Judging by his appearance, I'd say yes, Director. Before we arrived, he slaughtered every single resident in that small town. Now the entire area is surrounded by an unknown energy field, and no electronics work there. It's about twenty kilometers south of our current location."

Using Barton's phone as a reference point, Fury pulled up satellite imagery, but the area in question yielded nothing but static.

Given the circumstances, Fury reluctantly began to believe Barton's account.

"Stay nearby and wait. I'll send reinforcements immediately," Fury instructed before hanging up.

Watching Barton lie down on the ground to rest, Parker asked, "Are we really just going to rest here?"

When Barton nodded, Parker muttered his discontent under his breath.

Meanwhile, at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, Fury hesitated for a moment before dialing another number. "Tony, it's me—Nick Fury."

The sound of loud music and chaos blasted through the phone as Tony Stark shouted, "What? Hold on a second!"

After a moment, things quieted. "Alright, Fury, what's up?"

"I've got a new recruit for the Avengers."

"A new recruit? Are they as attractive as Natasha?" Tony quipped.

Ignoring Stark's flippancy, Fury continued, "Peter Parker. Fifteen years old. Currently working as a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in New York."

"Fury, you didn't call me to babysit, did you? I don't have time for that," Tony retorted.

"Fine, we'll table that discussion. Right now, there's a dangerous individual threatening national security near a desert town outside Las Vegas. He's slaughtered the entire population. I need you to investigate. Of course, if you'd prefer to lend us your Iron Man armor, I'd be happy to assign it to one of our agents."

"Not happening," Tony said firmly. "I'll head there myself. When do we leave?"

"Agent Barton and Spider-Man are already on-site. I'll arrange transportation for you immediately."

As Fury hung up, Stark muttered, "Great. Goodbye to my party and tonight's date."

Fury, unfazed, quickly contacted Black Widow. "Natasha, emergency mission. Return to HQ immediately."

This situation left Fury debating whether to involve the Ancient One and the Masters of the Mystic Arts. Something about this incident felt beyond the Avengers' capabilities, but he dismissed the thought. He wasn't eager to deal with their aloofness or cryptic warnings.

Parker and Barton spent the night resting on a rocky outcrop. At dawn, the distant roar of engines drew their attention. A Quinjet descended, landing a short distance away.

Leading the group was Tony Stark, impeccably dressed in a suit, looking more like he was heading to a board meeting than a battlefield. Behind him were Natasha, Agent May, and Agent Ward, along with a small team of S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives.

"Wow, is that Tony Stark?" Parker exclaimed, leaping up to meet him.

Barton wasted no time briefing the group. "The area is surrounded by a strange energy field. Electronics are completely unusable."

He glanced pointedly at Tony.

"Fury already warned me," Stark replied. "My suit's immune to electromagnetic interference."

Turning to Parker, he added, "You're the new recruit? At your age, you should be in school, not letting Fury rope you into his schemes."

"Uh…" Parker hesitated, unsure how to respond.

Natasha cut in, "We need to move. There's no telling what will happen if the ritual is completed."

The Quinjet couldn't enter the affected zone, and vehicles were useless. The team prepared to proceed on foot.

Tony, however, lingered, extending his hand as pieces of his Iron Man suit flew out of the Quinjet and assembled around him.

"Stark, wait! Let's stick together," Natasha cautioned.

"Yeah, yeah, I hear you," Tony said dismissively. Moments later, he rocketed into the distance, leaving a sonic boom in his wake.

Elsewhere, Johnny Blaze stood by the window of his motel room, staring into the distance.

"That's a hellish aura… Mephisto," he murmured. Although the demonic ritual concealed its presence from most, it couldn't escape Johnny's notice.

He hastily packed his belongings, preparing to head for the desert. Before leaving, he hesitated briefly, then picked up his phone.

"Garus, I've found Mephisto. He's in the American Southwest," Johnny said.

"Mephisto? Where exactly?" Garus responded eagerly, finally receiving the information he'd been waiting for.
