Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: Black Gold Festival, Sandstorm Competition!

Oreburgh City, situated in central Sinnoh, is a vital industrial hub known for its rich coal reserves. Nestled near the base of Mt. Coronet, Rax approached the city from the north, navigating a gentle slope.

As he got closer, the faint smell of sulfur filled the air. It wasn't overpowering, but skiploom clearly didn't like it.

"You can return for now," Rax said, recalling skiploom and walking into the city with Marowak.

This time, Rax opted for a luxurious five-star hotel instead of the Pokémon Center. After weeks of roughing it in the wilderness, he decided to reward himself and his team with some comfort.

Inside the room, Rax carefully closed the curtains and checked the locks before releasing Beldum and skiploom.

"I've got some things to take care of. You three can explore and relax for a while. I'll take you out later."

As his Pokémon explored the room, Rax opened his laptop and logged onto Team Rocket's internal network.

---

As an intelligence operative, Rax could access first-tier information about Oreburgh City: Gym Leader Roark, the Oreburgh Mining Museum, the Black Gold Chamber of Commerce, the coal mines, and even the underground black market.

After studying the information, Rax called back Beldum and skiploom and set off with Marowak to visit the Team Rocket liaison station.

---

The station was disguised as a jade antique shop. After exchanging the password, Rax was led to the back.

"I've captured some Pokémon. Help me exchange them for points," Rax said, laying several Poké Balls on the table.

The receptionist hesitated momentarily, surprised by the haul, but quickly got to work.

Half an hour later, Rax's account balance had increased to 3,210 points—a modest gain compared to mission rewards but far safer.

Afterward, Rax visited the Pokémon Center to heal Marowak and skiploom.

---

While waiting, Rax listened to the chatter around him. To his surprise, the upcoming Black Gold Festival was the main topic of conversation, not Gym Leader Roark.

The Black Gold Festival, a long-standing tradition in Oreburgh City, had evolved into a grand celebration featuring performances, lantern displays, and its signature event: the Sandstorm Competition.

In the Sandstorm Competition, only Rock, Ground, and Steel-type Pokémon were allowed. The arena was set in perpetual sandstorm conditions, posing a significant challenge for both trainers and their Pokémon.

The prospect intrigued Rax. The competition seemed perfect for Marowak, offering a chance to warm up for the gym battle.

---

An hour later, the PA system announced that Marowak and skiploom were ready for pickup.

"Both Pokémon are healthy and well-cared for. Keep up the good work!" Nurse Joy said with a cheerful smile, raising a small fist in encouragement.

"I will. Thank you," Rax replied softly, averting his gaze.

Nurse Joy's sweet smile lingered. Who wouldn't appreciate a handsome trainer who cared for his Pokémon so well?

---

Next, Rax registered for the Sandstorm Competition.

"The Black Gold Festival starts in three days, and the Sandstorm Competition begins at 7 AM at the gymnasium. Please don't stay up too late," the receptionist said, handing Rax his number and a competition manual.

"Got it. Thank you."

"Good luck to you and Marowak!"

"Thanks!"

---

On their way back to the hotel, Rax noticed the vibrant energy of Oreburgh City, despite its less-than-pleasant air.

"It's a shame Beldum isn't ready for battles yet," Rax mused. "This would've been a great opportunity."

Just as they were about to enter the hotel, a man rushed past, nearly knocking Rax over.

"Sorry! Sorry! I'm in a hurry!" the man exclaimed.

Rax turned to look and recognized him instantly. "Roark?"

"Do I know you?" Roark paused briefly but quickly added, "Sorry, I'm late!" and dashed into the hotel.

Rax shook his head with a smirk. "What a small world."

---

Inside the hotel, the lobby buzzed with excitement.

"Did Elite Four Bertha really come to the Black Gold Festival?"

"Yes! She's staying here. Everyone's hoping to catch a glimpse of her."

"Wow! She's my favorite!"

"Who doesn't love her?!"

The crowd at the front desk made it clear how difficult it would be to find accommodations now.

Although curious about seeing the legendary Elite Four member, Rax decided against waiting in the lobby. He swiped his room key and headed upstairs.

---

Back in his room, Rax researched the Sandstorm Competition. The event was far more competitive than the Galaxy Department Store opening competition he had previously participated in.

Elite trainers from various regions often entered, drawn by the high-quality prizes, which included rare items, evolution stones, and powerful potions.

Realistically, Rax knew Marowak had little chance of winning the championship. Still, a high placement could yield valuable rewards.

He pondered his strategy. "Maybe I should battle Roark first and use that as preparation for the Sandstorm Competition?"

Rax chuckled, shaking his head. "No point in overthinking. Let's focus on training, Marowak."

Marowak, polishing its bone club, nodded confidently.

"Alright. After you're ready, we'll start."
