Chapter 36 - Chapter 36 : The Nexus Beckon

The freighter slipped out of hyperspace and into a realm of chaos and beauty. Ahead of them lay the Nexus System, centered around the Nexus itself—a celestial anomaly like no other. Swirling currents of energy radiated outward, their shifting hues of gold and silver contrasting against the vast darkness of space. It pulsed like a heartbeat, each thrum resonating deep within Liora's chest.

The crew gathered at the viewport, momentarily awed into silence. The Nexus was both beautiful and terrifying, its immense power a reminder of the stakes that had driven them this far.

"Is that it?" Kade finally asked, breaking the quiet. "That's what all this fighting has been for?"

"It's more than what it looks like," Liora murmured, her eyes fixed on the swirling energy. "The Nexus isn't just a place—it's alive. I can feel it."

Tharn leaned forward, his gaze hard. "And the Emperor feels it too. He's close—I'd bet my rifle on it."

Kade groaned, gripping the controls. "Great. Let's make this quick before he shows up and ruins the view."

The freighter pushed closer to the Nexus, its engines straining as they encountered waves of electromagnetic interference. The crew braced themselves as the ship jolted, its shields flaring against the invisible currents.

As they neared, fragments of massive, ancient structures came into view—spires, rings, and towers floating in orbit around the Nexus. They were remnants of a civilization long gone, their edges scorched and broken as if torn apart by some cataclysmic event.

"These ruins…" Liora whispered. "They're the remains of the Starborn homeworld."

"Their homeworld?" Kade repeated, his voice tinged with disbelief. "That's what's left of it?"

"Yes," she said. "The Nexus wasn't just their source of power—it was their foundation. Their heart."

Tharn shook his head grimly. "And the Emperor destroyed it. Just like he'll destroy everything if he gets his hands on that power."

The weight of his words hung heavy in the air.

Guided by the Sigil on her hand, Liora directed Kade toward the brightest energy signature among the ruins—a glowing gateway embedded in a massive fragment of the Starborn's homeworld. The gateway pulsed faintly, its ancient glyphs matching the markings on the Nexus Key.

"That's our way in," Liora said, pointing toward the structure.

"Yeah, and it's surrounded by a minefield of space debris," Kade muttered, maneuvering the freighter through the wreckage. "Hope the Sigil knows how to dodge asteroids."

Tharn chuckled dryly but didn't lower his rifle. "Focus, Kade. The Emperor won't be far behind."

As the freighter approached the gateway, the alarms on the control panel blared. Red markers flared on the radar, signaling multiple ships dropping out of hyperspace behind them.

"Contact!" Kade shouted, his voice rising in alarm.

Imperial ships poured into the system, their sleek forms casting ominous shadows over the ruins. At the center of the fleet was the Obsidian Throne, its massive silhouette blocking out the light of the Nexus.

"He's here," Liora said, gripping the Nexus Key tightly. The Sigil on her hand flared brighter, as if sensing the Emperor's approach.

"We're out of time," Tharn growled. "Land us near that gateway and get ready to fight."

The freighter touched down on a crumbling platform near the gateway, its engines hissing as they powered down. The crew disembarked into the eerie silence of the ruins. The air was thick with energy, each step crackling with faint currents.

"Feels like the whole place is alive," Kade muttered, scanning the area nervously.

"It is," Liora replied, stepping toward the gateway. The ancient glyphs on its surface pulsed faintly, resonating with the Key in her hand.

Behind them, the screech of descending dropships shattered the stillness. Imperial soldiers poured out, their blasters raised as they advanced toward the platform.

"Here we go!" Tharn barked, raising his rifle and firing the first shot.

The battle erupted in a flash of light and sound. Blaster fire streaked across the platform, illuminating the ruins in bursts of red and gold. Liora ducked behind a pillar, the Sigil on her hand creating a protective barrier that deflected incoming shots.

"We have to hold them off!" she shouted, her voice barely audible over the chaos.

"No kidding!" Kade yelled, darting between cover as he fired at the advancing soldiers. "Any idea how long that gateway takes to open?"

"I'm working on it!" Liora called back, pressing the Nexus Key into the pedestal at the base of the gateway.

The glyphs flared to life, and a deep hum filled the air. The gateway began to pulse with energy, but it was slow—agonizingly slow.

On the battlefield, the Shade Emperor emerged from his dropship. His presence was suffocating, the air around him warping with raw power. He strode forward with unhurried grace, his dark cloak billowing as he surveyed the fight.

He raised a hand, and a wave of shadow swept across the platform, throwing debris and scattering Liora's team.

"You cannot win, child," the Emperor said, his voice cutting through the noise like a blade. "The Nexus belongs to me. Surrender now, and I may show mercy."

Liora rose to her feet, the Sigil blazing on her hand. She met the Emperor's gaze, her resolve unwavering. "You're wrong. The Nexus doesn't belong to you—or to anyone. It belongs to the galaxy."

"Foolish," the Emperor growled, raising his hands to summon another wave of dark energy.

The gateway behind Liora flared brighter, its energy nearing its peak. She could feel its pull, a surge of power that both terrified and exhilarated her.

"We're running out of time!" Tharn shouted, firing at the approaching troops.

Liora turned to her team, her voice steady despite the chaos. "Get to the freighter. I'll hold him off."

Kade froze, his eyes wide. "What? No! We're not leaving you!"

"You have to," she said firmly. "The Nexus needs a defender. And I'm the only one who can stop him."
