Chapter 20 -  Shadows in the Void

Kael stood at the edge of a jagged precipice, gazing into the seemingly endless black abyss before him. The rhythmic vibration of the Void Realm, which appeared to imitate the rhythm of his heartbeat, pulsed faintly. It was a place where time and space unraveled, leaving only the raw essence of oblivion, and it was alive in ways that defied logic. It was as though one were wading through an invisible ocean as the air—or what passed for air—felt dense. The taste of cold iron was sharp, metallic, and pervasive with each inhalation.

The region surrounding them was illuminated by the faint radiance of Selene's blade. Her eyes darted to every flicker in the darkness as she moved cautiously. Since their encounter with Ivar, the tension between them has become perceptible. Kael's thoughts were infiltrated by his words, which persisted like poison.

Selene interrupted the silence by remarking, "You are more reserved than you typically are." However, the furrow in her brow suggested that she was deeply concerned despite the brightness of her tone.

Kael did not respond immediately. The inky tendrils of the void continued to shift and coil as if they were cognizant of his scrutiny as his gaze remained fixated on them. He finally spoke, his voice low and remote. "Do you ever wonder what it's like to be erased?"

Selene's weapon was gripped tightly, and she froze. "Kael..."

He clarified, perceiving her alarm, "I do not mean physically." "I am referring to your essence." Your identity, your "memories—"everything that defines you. What if it simply ceased to exist?"

Although her grasp on the blade remained firm, Selene's expression softened. She approached him, her presence providing a sense of stability that the void could not provide. "You are not going to lose your identity," she stated with conviction. "You remain Kael." Regardless of the assertions made by this authority,.

Kael wished to trust her, but the void's oppressive presence was crushing. It whispered to him, its silent voice filling his mind with promises of invincibility and unending power. However, a faint undercurrent of hunger—a gnawing emptiness that threatened to overwhelm him—was present beneath the allure.

A sudden change in the void's cadence abruptly interrupted Kael's thoughts. The darkness that lay ahead began to churn violently, resembling a tempest that was gaining momentum. Selene approached with her blade extended defensively. "What's happening?"

Kael's iris narrowed as he expanded his sensory perceptions. Something—or someone—was causing the void to respond. A faint shimmer emerged within the pandemonium with each passing second, gradually intensifying its brightness. Kael had never encountered anything like it: a glowing figure with a blurred and indistinct outline, as if it existed only partially in this domain.

The figure advanced, its movements fluent yet unnatural. Its "face" was a smooth expanse of light that flickered like a fading flame, devoid of distinguishing features. Its voice resonated within their minds rather than their senses when it spoke, a haunting echo that lacked emotion.

"Kael Voidbreaker," it declared. "Bearer of the Primordial Nothingness." You are experiencing an imbalance.

Selene's blade was ablaze with energy as she instinctively stepped before Kael. "Who—or what—are you?"

The gesture was eerily human as the figure inclined its head. "I am the Guardian of Harmony." A sliver of order in a domain that was conceived from chaos. You, an offspring of the void, are an anomaly that jeopardizes the delicate equilibrium of existence.

Kael's pulse increased, but he endeavored to maintain his composure. "If you're here to stop me, you'll find I don't go down easily."

The Keeper refrained from initiating an attack. Rather, it extended a translucent hand, and the void surrounding them began to change. The inky darkness gave way to a vision of the material world—a battlefield scarred by Kael's power. The inhabitants of cities were reduced to ash, and the cities were in ruins. The void consumed the waters of rivers, which dried up. The sky was cracked, with jagged lines of light piercing an interminable gray expanse.

The Keeper stated, "This is the future you herald." "A world where nothingness consumes all. Do you deny it?"

Kael clenched his knuckles, his jaw tightening. The vision felt too real—a disturbing glimpse of what his power could unleash if left unchecked. "I'm not some mindless force of destruction," he said, his voice steady. "I'm in control."

The Keeper's form flickered, its radiance dimming momentarily. "Control is a delusion. The void obeys no authority. It is a hunger that increases with each use, devouring the world and the wielder. Even now, it erodes your essence."

Selene glanced back at Kael, her expression torn between concern and defiance. "You're wrong," she said, her voice firm. "Kael isn't like that. He's greater than this... this void."

The Keeper turned its impassive gaze to her. "Strength is futile without purpose. Tell me, mortal, what purpose does he serve? To what purpose does he manipulate the void?

Kael advanced, his voice piercing the tension. "I am not required to explain my actions to you." I control my authority, and I will determine its intended use.

The Keeper maintained his silence briefly, as if reflecting on his remarks. Its tone was frigid and more distant when it spoke again. "Then, demonstrate it." Prove that you can manipulate the vacuum without being overcome by its inherent characteristics.

The void surrounding them surged before Kael could respond. The ground beneath them began to tremble as the Keeper's form disintegrated into the darkness. Their forms were indistinct and shifting as shadows emerged from the abyss. Their movements were erratic and chaotic, moving at an unnatural pace.

Selene maintained a steady stance as she raised her blade. "Looks like we're proving something, all right."

As he drew upon the abyss, Kael felt his power surge through him like a tidal wave. As the shadows advanced toward them, their rapid movement altered their forms. The void effortlessly consumed the initial surge of attackers as Kael responded with a wave of energy. Nevertheless, as they plummeted, they became increasingly numerous, appearing limitless.

The struggle was unrelenting. Selene executed her attacks precisely, her blade piercing the darkness with blasts of light. Kael unleashed catastrophic void energy surges, erasing entire swaths of enemies. However, the cost was readily apparent. He sensed the void's presence creeping into his mind, its whispers growing louder as he used it more.

Selene's voice was strained as she cried, "You cannot continue to do this indefinitely." "We need a way out!"

Kael clenched his teeth, his mind rushing. The keeper's words reverberated in his consciousness. *Demonstrate that you are capable of manipulating the vacuum without becoming overwhelmed...*

He closed his eyes, his attention directed toward the rhythm of the void. He commenced directing its power, thereby influencing it deliberately instead of utilizing it carelessly. The shadows paused as if they were sensing the change in his approach. Kael extended his hand, drawing the void inward rather than outward, as he inhaled deeply. The shadows hesitated, their forms flickering before dissolving into nothingness.

The ground remained motionless, and the chaotic energy of the void began to dissipate. With a heavy inhale, Selene lowered her blade. "What... what did you do?"

The usual sharpness of Kael's irises was tempered by a newfound clarity as he opened them. "I refrained from engaging in combat with the void." I directed it. Managed the disorder rather than allowing it to dictate my actions.

Selene gazed at him with a glimmer of optimism in her eyes. "Maybe you really can master this, Kael."

The Keeper's voice echoed faintly as the void settled, its tone inscrutable. "You have initiated the process." However, the void is patient, and the path ahead is lengthy. Kael Voidbreaker, exercise caution. The equilibrium is precarious.

Kael and Selene were left alone in the silence of the abyss as the Keeper's vision dissipated. Kael gazed at Selene, a slight smile tugging at his lips. "Come on," he said. "We've got a lot to figure out."

Selene nodded, synchronizing her movements with his. As they walked, the void appeared less oppressive, and its murmurs were more subdued. However, Kael was aware that the challenge was not yet complete. He was now part of the void, requiring more than strength to conquer it. The purpose would be necessary. And for the first time, Kael sensed that he was beginning to comprehend the potential meaning of that purpose.
