Chapter 48 - The Chase

The scene was horrifying. The emaciated young man turned pale with fear. With only four mechanical iron soldiers left, he fled for his life, finally managing to escape the clutches of the Thorny Forest.

He didn't dare look back, scrambling into the nearby mountains with all his might, cursing his parents for not giving him more legs. At this moment, terror gripped his heart. The image of his companions being dragged into the poisonous mist replayed in his mind, causing his legs to tremble uncontrollably.

If it weren't for his quick reflexes and the fact that mechanical units were immune to the toxic fog, he would have met the same fate—dead in that forest. He couldn't comprehend how such a powerful territory could exist in this place. It was beyond anything he could have imagined! And the most baffling part was that he had never even heard of it before.

Now, even if he were given a hundred more chances, he wouldn't dare approach that place again. Yet, at the same time, he felt a deep sense of resentment. He couldn't accept the fact that he had lost so many of his units. These were fifth-tier units he had painstakingly recruited using hard-earned Mana, and losing more than half of them in one go was a devastating blow.

"Hmph! If I can't deal with you, someone else will!" he muttered under his breath, his fear giving way to a dark, brooding expression. "Just wait. I'll make sure everyone knows the location of your territory!"

But he knew that escaping was his top priority right now. With only a handful of units left, staying out in the open was far too dangerous. This wasn't the time for revenge. So he quickened his pace, hurrying back to his own territory.

Unbeknownst to him, a figure soared high above, silently tracking his every move. It was the Wood Drake from Alex's territory.

In fact, Alex had received an invasion alert the moment his territory was attacked. Confident in his territory's defenses, he had sent the Wood Drake to follow the fleeing enemy as soon as he sensed their escape through their mental link. Meanwhile, Alex himself quickly returned to his territory, where he was greeted by the sight of numerous corpses scattered across the Thorny Forest.

"Hmph! You thought you could attack my territory and get away with it?" Alex muttered coldly.

It was clear that the intruder had tried to destroy his territory and plunder its resources while he was away. For someone who posed such a threat to his life, Alex had no intention of letting them go. Especially since the intruder now knew the location of his territory—leaving them alive would only invite future trouble.

"Let's go. We're following them!" Alex commanded, leading his twenty-five units in pursuit.

With the Wood Drake scouting ahead, there was no risk of losing the trail. They ventured deep into the mountains, following the mental link from the Wood Drake. In less than an hour, they arrived at the entrance of a hidden underground cave, where the Wood Drake perched above.

"So this is where they're hiding?" Alex murmured, surprised. He had explored this area several times before but had never noticed the cave. Without hesitation, he led his plant units inside.

Meanwhile, the young man, now back in his territory, was oblivious to the danger closing in. He slumped into a chair inside his Lord's Castle, a mix of relief and seething anger on his face. After catching his breath, he immediately opened the Regional Chat, ready to expose the location of Alex's territory to vent his rage.

But just as he was about to type, a deafening explosion shook the ground, rattling the entire cave.

"What's going on? What happened?" the young man, Wang Lian (translated as William), exclaimed, rushing outside.

He was met with the sight of a gaping hole in his territory's walls and a large group of plant units standing outside. When his eyes landed on Alex, standing amidst the plants, his heart sank.

"Who are you? Why are you attacking my territory?" William demanded, though his voice betrayed his panic.

Alex smirked coldly. "You just attacked my territory. Don't tell me you've already forgotten?"

William's pupils constricted. "It's you! How... how did you find my territory?"

He was utterly flustered. He never expected the owner of that terrifying territory to track him down so quickly. The memories of the horrors he had witnessed earlier flooded back, and his legs nearly gave out beneath him. But he quickly regained his composure, shouting at the mechanical iron soldiers stationed in his territory.

"Stop him! Don't let him get inside!" he yelled, before darting back into his Lord's Castle.

The dozen or so mechanical iron soldiers surged forward, rushing through the breach in the wall to surround Alex. But before they could take more than a few steps, a cluster of mushrooms landed at their feet.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

A series of deafening explosions rocked the cave, shaking the ground and leaving cracks in its surface. The mechanical iron soldiers were blown to pieces, unable to withstand the explosive power of the sixth-tier Fission Mushrooms.

As the notifications of his units' deaths echoed in his mind, William, who had been desperately trying to protect his territory core, froze in terror. His face drained of color.

Alex, meanwhile, led his plant army to the entrance of the Lord's Castle, his cold gaze piercing through the doorway to lock onto William and the massive mechanical gear behind him—the core of the mechanical territory.

"No! You can't kill me! This... this is a crime!" William stammered, backing away in panic. He had already forgotten how he had tried to kill Alex just moments ago.

But Alex felt no pity for someone who had sought to harm him. With a nod to the Fission Mushrooms by his side, several red mushrooms were tossed into the Lord's Castle.

BOOM!

The entire structure shook violently before being reduced to rubble. A powerful shockwave, accompanied by William's agonized screams, swept through the cave, echoing for hundreds of meters.

At the same time, a notification appeared in Alex's mind.

[You have killed a fifth-tier lord. Obtained: 89 Mana, 250 Wood, 340 Stone, 1 fifth-tier Lord's Essence.]

With the destruction of the territory core and the death of its lord, the mechanical walls and buildings collapsed into ruins. Alex glanced at the resources he had gained and couldn't help but sigh. No wonder William hadn't recruited new units—he had barely any Mana left.

Shaking his head, Alex decided not to linger. He led his plant units out of the cave, aware that the commotion had likely drawn attention. It was best to leave before anyone else showed up.

Soon, Alex returned to his territory as night began to fall. The day's expedition had been fruitful. Not only had his Explosive Mushrooms advanced to the sixth tier, but he had also amassed over 30,000 Mana. With only nine days left until the month's end, he needed to gather the remaining 60,000 Mana in time.

The thought filled him with a sense of urgency.
