Chapter 7 - THE STUDY GROUP

As midterms loomed, the atmosphere on campus grew tense. The once vibrant chatter in hallways was replaced by hushed conversations and the frantic flipping of textbook pages. The library became a second home for many students, tables piled high with notebooks, laptops, and half-empty coffee cups were common sights around here. Mira and Jake were among the many feeling the pressure, each determined to excel in their upcoming exams.

One crisp evening, Mira sat alone in her usual corner of the library, her focus wavering as she tried to make sense of her notes. Her highlighters and pens surrounded her like a defensive wall, but despite her efforts she couldn't maintain her focus. Her once clear handwriting now appears blur before her eyes and the endless lines of text in her notes made her somewhat dizzy. She sighed and rubbed her temples in an attempt to stop the upcoming headache.

"Looks like you're about to start a war against your notes", said a familiar voice, drawing Mira out of her reverie. She glanced up to see Jenna dropping into the seat across from her, an easy grin on her face.

Mira offered a weak smile. "I'm not sure if I can keep going. If I take a break now, I might never get back to it."

Jenna leaned forward, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Who said you need break? what you need isn't a break, you need umm, what's it called again yeah, reinforcements. You know, backup," Jenna replied with a grin.

Mira raised an eyebrow. "Backup? "What do you mean by that?"

"Yeah, something like a study group", Jenna said, Well tackle the monster together, it'll be way more fun than slogging through this alone. Plus, it could be so much fun."

The idea planted a seed of hope in Mira's mind and instantly lifted her spirits. "That's actually a great idea. Who do you think we should invite?"

Jenna's grin widened, as she tapped her chin thoughtfully, hinting that she already has a plan. "Well, I was thinking we could ask Jake and Mark. They're both really sharp, remember when they helped us with the article we were working on and we end up having a perfect article. Plus, it'll make things pretty interesting."

Mira's heart fluttered at the mention of Jake, though she tried to keep her expression neutral, nodding her head in agreement. "I think it's worth a shot. Let's ask them."

Later that evening, Jenna and Mira met up with Jake and Mark at the campus café to pitch the idea. The café buzzed with activity, the scent of coffee mingling with the sound of soft music and clinking mugs, the hiss of the espresso machine and the murmur of conversation provided a comforting backdrop. Jenna wasted no time getting to the point.

"Hey, guys!" she said, her enthusiasm infectious. "Mira and I were talking, and we thought it'd be great to form a study group, we think a study group would be a gamechanger for midterms. You two in?"

Mark leaned back in his chair, his trademark grin spreading across his face. "Absolutely. I could use all the help I can get with econ. That stuff's brutal."

Jake glanced at Mira, his expression thoughtful before breaking into a smile. "Count me in. Studying alone gets boring after a while."

"Great!" Jenna clapped her hands together. "We'll meet tomorrow in the library. Bring your notes, snacks, and all the brainpower you've got. And most importantly positive vibes!"

The following day, the newly formed study group gathered in a quiet corner of the library. They pushed several tables together, creating a large workspace cluttered with textbooks, laptops, and an impressive array of snacks that Jenna had brought.

The first hour was a bit chaotic as they settled into a rhythm. Jenna and Mark's playful banter often threatened to derail their focus, but Jake and Mira managed to steer them back on track. Soon, they found a balance between productivity and fun.

Mark, surprisingly, proved to be the group's math whiz, effortlessly explaining complex equations to the others. Mira excelled in crafting study guides, her notes neatly organized and color-coded. Jake, with his deep understanding of historical events, turned dull facts into captivating stories, making their study sessions more engaging. Jenna, ever the motivator, kept everyone's spirits high with her jokes and relentless positivity.

As days turned into weeks, the group fell into rhythm. They divided their time between subjects, tackling one challenge at a time. Their study session became a blend of hard work and fun, each member brining something to the table. They pushed each other to excel, sharing knowledge, strategies and the rest while supporting one another. Not to mention the fun they have between sessions.

One evening, after hours of studying, they decided to take a break. The library had emptied out, leaving only a few stragglers hunched over their desks. The group moved to the library steps, where the cool night air provided a refreshing change.

Mira sat next to Jake, her shoulders relaxing for the first time that day. "I'm really glad we formed this study group," she said, her voice warm. "It's made everything feel more manageable."

Jake nodded; his gaze thoughtful. "Yeah, it's been a good change of pace. And honestly, I've enjoyed working with you."

His words sent a flutter through Mira's chest, and she found herself smiling despite the exhaustion. "Me too. You make history way more interesting than my professor ever could."

They talked quietly as the others joked in the background, their conversation drifting to more personal topics. Mira shared stories of growing up in a small town, her love of literature sparking during quiet afternoons spent reading under a tree in her backyard. Jake spoke about his fascination with history, how he loved uncovering the hidden connections between past and present.

By the time they returned to studying, their bond had deepened. The study group became more than just a way to prepare for exams, it was a source of support and camaraderie, something that carried them through the grueling weeks leading up to midterms.

For Mira and Jake, the study sessions had been more than academic, they had brought them closer in a way neither had anticipated.
