Chapter 181 - THE GHOSTS OF POVEGLIA ISLAND – ITALY’S HAUNTED ISLAND OF DEATH

ORIGIN: Italy

Poveglia Island is located in the Venetian Lagoon of Italy and is often regarded as one of the most haunted places in the world.

The island has been shrouded in so many scary legends for centuries with a dark history of plague, death, and madness,

It was first used as a quarantine station during the bubonic plague outbreaks in the 18th and 19th centuries.

So with barely an cure for the plague; thousands of plague victims were sent to die on Poveglia, with mass graves filled with rotting corpses.

Some say the soil is composed of human ash, as bodies were burned very frequently then.

Locals believe the souls of these victims still stay, crying out in agony.

In the 20th century, Poveglia became home to a mental asylum which only further added to its already terrifying history.

The mad patients said they saw ghostly apparitions and shadowy figures, but all their claims and complaints were dismissed as delusions from the madness in their brain.

According to legend, a sadistic doctor once performed cruel experiments on the mentally ill, before going mad himself and jumping down to his death from the asylum's bell tower.

His spirit is said to haunt the ruins, and some visitors say they've heard his screams reaching out through the night.

Today, Poveglia is abandoned, forbidden to tourists, and feared by locals, who completely refuse to set foot on its cursed shores.
