ORIGIN: China
This legend is told differently in various regions, but the main point of the legend is that of a woman whose spirit returned as a glowing red lantern to haunt the living.
One common version of the story tells of a young woman promised in marriage (Betrothed) to a cruel and abusive man.
On the night before her wedding, she tried to escape, but her fiancé caught her, murdered her and buried her body beneath a bridge.
Since then, people who pass by at night claim to see a floating red lantern, and also hear the sound of weeping or soft footsteps.
Those who follow the lantern sometimes disappear or go mad, lured away by the ghost bride.
Another version says that the Red Lantern Ghost appears to warn people of a soon coming disaster.
In some villages, elders tell stories of travelers seeing the lantern before floods, landslides, or mysterious deaths.
In all, whether she wants revenge or justice, the Red Lantern Ghost remains one of China's most feared ghost apparitions.
