ORIGIN: Tedworth (now known as Tidworth), Wiltshire, England.
Once upon a time, a man named John Mompesson, became the very unfortunate target of a supernatural tormentor.
In 1661, Mompesson had a legal dispute with a drummer named William Drury, who had been fraudulently collecting money by pretending to have official authority of some sorts.
Mompesson then confiscated Drury's drum as part of the punishment.
Soon after that, strange disturbances began to happen at Mompesson's home.
There were sounds of ever continuous drumming, ones that sounded like military drumrolls.
Each time this happened, the sound was so loud it thumped and vibrated through the entire house, especially at night.
With time, the haunting only got worse.
Furniture would move on its own, loud knocks shook the walls, and beds lifted themselves upbfrom the ground.
Mompesson's children were also dragged harshly and violently from their beds by unseen hands.
Witnesses, including clergymen and townsfolk, were baffled, shocked and scared of the spirit.
The legend says that Drury had invoked a curse upon Mompesson using witchcraft as a revenge.
Years later, the case was publicized and even referenced by Joseph Glanvill, a notable writer on witchcraft.
