Chapter 142 - GREEN LADY OF CAERPHILLY CASTLE

ORIGIN: Wales.

This legend is tied to one of Wales' most famous medieval fortresses.

The Caerphilly Castle was built in the 13th century, and renowned not only for its impressive structure but also for the sad, sorrowful spirit that was said to wander its halls and corridors:

The Green Lady.

She is a woman draped in a flowing green gown, with eyes full of sadness and longing.

Once upon a time, she was Princess Alice of Angouleme, the wife of Gilbert de Clare, Lord of Glamorgan.

Though their marriage was one of mighty status, it lacked love.

Then Alice made the unconscious mistake of falling deeply in love with a Welsh prince; her husband's rival.

When Gilbert found out about the affair, he went into a full fit of rage and ordered the execution of Alice's lover.

For her, his wife, he had her imprisoned within the castle walls.

Heartbroken, Alice died soon after.

But her restless spirit remained, searching for her lost love.

People say they've seen her in her in a green dress, drifting and half floating near the castle's windows, ramparts, and great hall.

Locals believe that her spirit stays as a reminder of the terrible consequences of forbidden love.

Some say that on quiet nights, the sounds of soft weeping can be heard carried by the wind through the castle ruins.
