City of Zaban, somewhere underground.
Descending by elevator, the scenery unfolding before the young man's eyes resembles ancient mines or tunnels worn down by time.
"What a typical sight... exactly like that anime I once watched..."
Walking slowly, he seems lost in thought. He's not sure why he's here or how he ended up in this strange yet familiar world. But there's one thing he knows for sure: somehow, he's traveled to the universe of Hunter x Hunter. A vast world filled with dangers and mysteries that narrates the journey of a boy searching for his father.
"How long has it been...? I've already been in this world for three years... Finally, the day has come. I'm going to take the Hunter Exam... and meet the canonical characters."
A small smile appears on his lips as his mind drifts to memories that, though distant, still feel alive. Everything still seemed unreal, but these three years had forced him to adapt. He was now accustomed to the reality of this place.
Physically, the young man appears to be between 17 and 18 years old. His body is discreet, with well-proportioned muscles resulting from years of training. Silky and slightly messy hair frames a soft expression, revealing little about his thoughts. Dressed in simple clothes in black and blue tones, he wears a dark green cap that matches his practical and reserved style, almost like that of a true hunter.
Leaning against one of the side walls, he chooses a discreet corner and observes silently. Gathering information had become a natural habit after so much time in this distinct and unpredictable world.
Initially, his only concern was survival. But as the days passed, something changed. He began to train, to strengthen body and mind. Now, he was determined: he would make a name for himself in this world. Since fate had brought him here, he would become an explorer. He would uncover the hidden mysteries beneath the veil of this fascinating universe.
The environment around him was claustrophobic, like a dark cave. He examined the traces of old scrapings on the ground and the almost faded scratches on the walls. It was evident that this space had been used in the past, perhaps years ago. Still, there was no way to predict what kinds of dangers might have formed over time.
The air was warm and heavy, filled with dust. There was a slight metallic smell in the atmosphere, indicating the possible death of some organism or animal.
"Maybe cannibalism among the weakest... It was inevitable that this wouldn't be as friendly as in the anime."
After all, this wasn't a world filtered by ideals of morality. For him, it had become second nature. The young man standing there was no longer the same from the modern life he once knew. Now, he was an experienced explorer, someone who had gained enough strength to protect himself.
His body, though relaxed, exuded a subtle tension, as if ready to react to any unforeseen event.
"I need to stay more alert. In the anime, everything seemed beautiful, full of friendship and unity... but reality isn't like that. This world is a dark and cold abyss for the weak."
Time passed, and then he saw something. Three figures were approaching. A boy with spiky hair resembling a hedgehog, a serious young man wearing glasses, and another dressed in tribal clothes marked by familiar designs.
Leaning against the wall, the young man observed them attentively. Subtle emotional fluctuations crossed his face. He recognized them. In fact, he had watched them. They were the protagonists: Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio. The initial trio before they met Killua.
"Fortunately, the plot is as I remembered... Gon and the others have arrived as expected to participate in the 287th Hunter Exam."
A slight enthusiasm ran through his mind. Knowing the story's events was his greatest advantage. With that, he calmed down.
The young man decided to approach, walking with soft and silent steps, like a skilled predator.
— Hey! Hello, I'm Yami Hoshizawa. — he said with a light and friendly smile.
The three were surprised by the sudden approach; they hadn't expected someone to greet them like that.
— Hello! My name is Gon Freecss, and these are Kurapika and Leorio. — Gon responded enthusiastically and kindly.
While Gon introduced himself, excited to meet someone new, the other two only nodded. Kurapika, however, had a slight gleam of suspicion in his eyes.
— It's a pleasure, friends. You seem like promising candidates, so I decided to say hi. — Yami commented naturally.
— Ah, strange guy, you also seem pretty strong. — Leorio responded, trying to hide his shyness behind the compliment.
— Are you an amateur hunter? By your clothes and training marks, you seem quite experienced. — Kurapika observed curiously, with a sharp gaze.
— Oh, yes! Actually, I'm an explorer. But since I end up encountering wild beasts along the way, I had to train and become stronger. Haha! — Yami responded in a relaxed and friendly manner.
— And then, you seem a bit nervous. How about I share what I know about this exam stage as a gesture of friendship? — he suggested, half-jokingly.
— Hm... That's interesting. Are you suggesting an alliance? — Kurapika questioned, narrowing his eyes suspiciously.
— Wow! You're an explorer? That's amazing! — Gon exclaimed, unable to contain his excitement, his eyes shining with curiosity.
— Yes, I love exploring nature and uncovering mysteries. This world is magnificent, don't you think? — Yami replied softly. — And, of course, I intend to ally with you... if you allow me.
Kurapika pondered the offer. They knew little about the exam, and having more information could be a viable exchange. He trusted his judgment, and, for now, Yami didn't seem like an immediate threat.
— You're welcome to join us, but we need the information now. Is that okay? — Kurapika said, still somewhat suspicious but showing initial trust.
— Of course! It'll be great to have an explorer with us! Can you share your adventures along the way? — Gon exclaimed, curious and welcoming.
— Hm, having someone more serious would be a great idea. — Leorio commented with a smile.
— I'm glad to join you, friends. And sure, I can share the information now. Consider it a gift for our first meeting. — Yami replied, keeping his calm and unwavering smile.
Gon seemed full of energy and anxiety, while Leorio focused his attention on Yami. Kurapika, though still attentive, now displayed a lighter yet sharp gaze.
— Well... where should I start...? Ah, yes. — Yami slightly tilted his head, as if organizing his thoughts. — This place used to be an old cargo structure, used to secretly transport materials by a mining company. It also connects to the city's sewers and has a history of four to seven years. The Hunter Association decided to use this place after some modifications.
He paused, looking at the three.
— So don't worry, there aren't any overly exaggerated dangers... but it's still necessary to be cautious. At this stage, the biggest threat is the candidates themselves. Some may resort to... extreme methods, let's say. You understand what I mean.
Yami spoke seriously, basing his words on the clues and vague information he had collected. Although his words weren't entirely factual, he trusted his analysis and wanted to demonstrate that he was capable and confident. After all, he hadn't become an explorer by chance.
Gon's eyes sparkled with pure curiosity and enthusiasm. Leorio relaxed a bit, knowing there wouldn't be hidden dangers, while Kurapika became thoughtful, briefly analyzing the shared information.
— Wow! How do you know so much? I didn't expect this place to have such a history. Yoxi, now I feel even more motivated to become a Hunter, like my father! — Gon exclaimed, renewed and full of excitement.
— Right, Gon, calm down. Our friend here only shared basic information, but, as it's our first contact, let's accept it for now. It's a pleasure to have you join our little group. — Kurapika said with a slight smile, now much more receptive.
Inside, Kurapika maintained his rational analysis. Although he didn't show it, he saw something familiar in Yami — an observer, someone who gathers information and seeks utility in everything around him. Traits he himself valued as a future Hunter.
— This seems complicated... I hope I can get my Hunter license soon. I can't wait to start earning money! Haha! — Leorio commented, letting out a laugh that made him seem like a "greedy uncle."
— Glad what I said was useful. Unfortunately, I'm still collecting deeper information, but it's not bad, right? — Yami said, slightly embarrassed but maintaining his confidence. — From what we know, this is a subterranean labyrinth, styled as an old mine, restructured and previously cleaned. Despite possible dangers, the focus here is on the candidates...
He paused and, with a more serious tone, added:
— Oh, and among us... the biggest danger here is that clown-looking guy. Believe me, he has the aura of a maniac. Don't look at him. Even a glance can attract his attention, and he's experienced.
— Oh, that funny-looking guy? He seems dangerous... — Gon said, attentive but with his natural ease.
— Tch! That guy not only looks it, but he is dangerous. He gives me the creeps. — Leorio commented, shuddering dramatically.
— That's true. I've been observing him from the corner of my eye. He's strong... he seems like a beast looking for his prey. It's always good to stay alert, as you suggested. — Kurapika pondered with a serious expression.
The group's dynamics continued with comments and stories Yami shared while they awaited the examiner's arrival. During this interval, they received numbered badges for identification as candidates.
An initial trust had formed within the group, a result of Yami's transparency and friendly attitude. Kurapika, always analytical, recognized Yami's social skills but didn't see them as a bad thing. Though he slightly lowered his guard, he intensified his attention to the surroundings.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed in the muffled environment. They were firm yet quick, a peculiar contrast. A mysterious and casual man with a serious and professional posture appeared ahead. He was someone clearly associated with the organization.
— Hello, everyone. My name is Satotsu, and I am the examiner for this phase of the Hunter Exam. Very well, let's proceed. All you need to do is follow me. — he said smoothly and professionally.
With that, he began walking through the corridor ahead, gradually accelerating while still just walking.
— Hey, this is getting too fast, right? — Leorio commented, sweating after some time.
— The pace has increased... Seems like now we need to run to keep up. — Kurapika said, frowning as he maintained his rhythm.
— I'm excited! There are so many people here. Everyone seems so strong... — Gon exclaimed, oblivious to the increased speed.
— This is just the beginning, friends... This is a test of endurance. There are no other requirements besides following him... Too bad I didn't bring a bike. — Yami said playfully, trying to lighten the mood.
— You're creative... but you're right. Unfortunately, we didn't know about this and couldn't prepare. — Kurapika pondered, visibly focused though slightly out of breath.
— Hey, hey! Already thinking about cheating so early? Ahh, just watch... I'll pass this and get my license easily. Wait for me, money! Haha! — Leorio exclaimed, drawing strength from every muscle as the test demanded more from his physique.
The group advanced, exchanging light jokes, camaraderie, and distractions, with mutual support beginning to form. However, a pair of curious eyes observed them from a distance.
Yami noticed. His discreet gaze caught a presence just behind. Those iconic silver hair strands... Who else could it be but Killua? He was there, following them, drawn by the group's dynamic — and, of course, by Gon, who seemed to be his age.
A subtle smile appeared on Yami's lips. Finally, the plot was unfolding as expected.
To be continued...
