Chereads / Dungeon Lord In How To Train Your Dragon / Chapter 2 - Mourning Mother

Chapter 2 - Mourning Mother

In the cold, icy terrain of the Arctic, a large mass of spikey blueish-green ice could be seen. The iceberg-like structure was so large that it remained unnoticed, thanks to the strong snow-filled winds.

This structure held a huge secret: it wasn't solid. It was hollow inside, containing a vast territory with lush green grass. From inside, one could see that the ice structure acted as a large dome that shielded the space from the harsh weather outside.

Hundreds of dragons were flying, lying belly up, splashing in the water, and sleeping peacefully as if completely unaware of the cold weather outside.

While most dragons relaxed, a large group gathered around a big woody-brown dragon. The dragon's four wings were spread out in a dome-like way, as if guarding something from the other dragons. The overly curious dragons that tried looking inside would get whacked by the dragon's tail or roared at.

An occasional scream of a woman in pain could be heard from inside its wings.

The source was a young woman with a swollen belly who was lying on the grass as she tried to give birth.

The young woman was clearly in pain and had been for the last 3 hours, but she continued fighting. And thankfully, after so much pain, she felt relieved when she felt like her child had gone through.

The pain she felt as she sat up was entirely drowned by the excitement of seeing her baby. That excitement, however, began to die as she held her limp child. She started rubbing its chest as she screamed wildly at her baby, hoping that it would get a reaction from him.

"No! No! Come on! Come on!! Cry!!! Move!!!! Anything, please!!! I can't lose you too…"

Out of dispersion, she had begun to hit the newborn's back hard, leaving handprints on his back. After seeing how she had hurt her baby, she started crying while hugging him tightly. Whether it was the blood loss or just the shock of her baby being born stillborn, the auburn-haired woman fainted. Even while she fainted, she didn't let go of her baby that she held tightly.

The dragons around her seemed to understand what was going on. They all released a sad, low growl and lowered their heads.

A small black baby dragon looked curiously at the dragons around him and began to mimic them.

The respect it was unknowingly showing was cut short by its curiosity. He began silently crouching towards the center of the group, knowing that if he was caught, he would be smacked away.

Once he was next to the mother and child, the baby dragon began licking the baby dirty baby clean. Seeing that it wasn't responding, he started poking it with a claw, but unexpectedly, his claw made contact with soft skin, causing him to scratch the baby. Seeing that he had injured the baby, the black baby dragon ran away into the crowd before the dragon mean dragon raised her head.

[10 hours later]

The young brown-haired mother's puffy red eyes were proof that she had cried for hours. In front of her was a large, boat-shaped piece of ice. As she hand-carved it with a hot spike, her eyes drifted to a small hole in the ground. Whenever she saw it, she would shake her head wildly.

"No! If I bury him here, I will keep my son from going to the afterlife. And besides this way maybe….just maybe…Stoick might be able to see his son. Oh Njord, please….let my beloved see our son at least once."

As she continued to work on the boat, the young woman would wipe the endless tears.

After an hour of work, she had managed to make a decent ice boat, which she laid her son on and began walking to the edge of the glacier.

She sat down on the ice and lowered her son so that she could take off a leather strap necklace with a glowing blue crystal shard tied to it. She put the necklace around her son's head and kissed his forehead.

"This is the present that your father gave me when we first got together. It is now the only thing that I have left. When he gave it to me, he said it was part of the moon, haha. Can you believe it…. Your father said it would light my way just like I light his. I now give it to you, son. May it guide your way."

She gave him another kiss on the forehead and hugged the boat intensely.

"Your father said that if ever we had another son, we would name him Ragnar….Ragnar Haddock, oh my, what a name, haha. Your name can mean a few things, but the translation your father and I like was wise leader. Well, your father liked the translation of Army Councilor, haha. You have an older brother named Hiccup, who is smaller than most. We hoped that his younger brother would help keep him safe and make up for what he lacked. I wish you had been able to meet them both. Oh, they would have loved you, haha."

The mother continued talking to her deceased son for nearly an hour.

Once she had said what she needed to say, she gave her son one last kiss and gently lowered his body into the ocean.

Tears began flooding her face once more as she saw the small ice ship lit up by the necklace start to move further away.
