Chapter 19 : The Fracture Between Us

---

Liana's eyes fluttered open, but the world around her was a blur—a swirling chaos of light and shadow. Her body ached, every muscle screaming in protest as if she had been torn apart and put back together. She tried to move, but her limbs felt like they belonged to someone else, heavy and uncooperative.

The first thing she noticed was the silence.

It was a strange kind of silence—unnatural, as if the world itself had paused, holding its breath. The rift above had closed, and the Abyss had been pushed back, but something else had happened. Something more subtle, yet undeniably present.

She sat up, gasping for air, her hand instinctively reaching for the Heart at her side. But it wasn't there. Panic gripped her chest as she looked around, heart racing. Where was it? What had happened to the Heart?

Her gaze swept across the room. The Temple, which had once been full of life and dark energy, was now eerily still, bathed in the soft glow of the Heart's last explosion. The altar lay shattered, its remnants scattered across the floor.

But there was no sign of the Heart.

"Liana."

The voice was soft but filled with concern. She turned to find Rook standing just a few feet away, his face drawn with exhaustion. His eyes, once full of hope and determination, now held an unfamiliar hardness. A shadow of doubt lingered behind them.

"Rook…" Liana whispered, but the words felt strange on her tongue. She reached out, her hand trembling, but he stepped back, avoiding her touch.

"Where is it?" she asked, the fear creeping back into her chest. "The Heart. What happened?"

Rook's expression hardened, his jaw tight. He didn't answer immediately, and when he did, his words hit her like a physical blow.

"The Heart is gone, Liana. You're… you're not the same."

The words stung, but it was the look in his eyes that hurt the most. It wasn't just confusion or concern—it was something else. Something darker.

She recoiled as if struck, but before she could respond, Zareen and Cassandra entered the room, their faces drawn and weary. They, too, wore expressions of wariness, of something unspoken hanging in the air between them.

"Liana…" Cassandra began, her voice quieter than usual. "You've changed."

Liana's chest tightened at the words, a flood of guilt rushing through her. "What do you mean? I'm still… I'm still me. We stopped it. We stopped the Abyss. Isn't that enough?"

The silence that followed was suffocating. The Guardians exchanged glances, their faces hardening. Zareen was the first to speak, her voice heavy with an unspoken truth.

"You stopped the Abyss," she said slowly, her eyes searching Liana's, "but at what cost?"

Liana's heart skipped. "What are you talking about?"

The words spilled out, each one a knife to her heart.

"The Heart's power… it didn't just fade away when you pushed the Abyss back. You became part of it. You were its vessel." Zareen paused, her voice softening. "You're no longer just Liana. The Heart… it's still inside you, isn't it?"

Liana felt a cold chill seep through her, her hand instinctively going to her chest. The Heart had been so much a part of her, its power flowing through her veins, its presence at the very core of her being. But now, it felt… different. Distant. Like a ghost in her mind, whispering faintly but with no true connection.

She shook her head, trying to deny it, but her thoughts were muddled. Her connection to the Heart was fraying, but the remnants of its power still lingered, like a bitter aftertaste that wouldn't fade.

"I don't feel it," Liana whispered, her voice cracking. "I don't feel like me anymore."

Cassandra stepped forward, her hand gently resting on Liana's shoulder. "You're not the same, Liana. You've changed. The Heart's darkness has touched you, and it's not something we can just fix with a few words."

Rook's eyes were filled with uncertainty, his brow furrowed as if he was grappling with something deep within himself. "I don't know if we can save you. Not this time."

The words cut deeper than she could ever have expected, and for a moment, Liana felt as though the ground beneath her was shifting, as if the very foundations of everything she had known were crumbling away. Save me? Had they already decided she needed saving? Did they think her lost?

"No," she whispered, more to herself than to them. "I don't need saving."

But the truth was, she did. She could feel it in the depths of her soul—the Heart's power still swirling inside her, a constant reminder that she had become something more than human, yet less than what she had been. She could sense the distance between herself and the others now, a divide that hadn't been there before.

Zareen's gaze softened. "We want to help you, Liana. But we can't do it alone."

Liana swallowed hard, the weight of their words pressing down on her chest. She wanted to reach out, to beg for their forgiveness, to tell them she could control the Heart's power, that she wasn't lost, but the words felt stuck in her throat. The fracture between them was too wide, too deep to bridge with a few simple reassurances.

"No one can help me," she said, her voice cold and distant. "Not anymore."

The moment she spoke those words, she felt it—the Heart inside her shuddered. It was no longer just a weapon or a source of power. It was a force that was trying to assert its dominance, its will over hers, and she could feel it clawing at her mind.

"Liana…" Rook's voice cracked, the emotion in it raw and vulnerable. "Don't do this. Don't shut us out."

But Liana didn't know how to stop herself. The fracture was growing wider, the distance between her and the people she cared about stretching further. She could feel herself slipping away, her very essence being pulled in two different directions: one toward the Heart's darkness, and the other toward the people who had once been her family.

And as the gap between them continued to widen, Liana could no longer ignore the truth. The Heart was not the only thing that had changed. It was her. She had become something else entirely.

A distant voice, one that had been silent for so long, whispered to her again: You belong to the Abyss now. There is no going back.

Liana's eyes widened as the darkness within her stirred once more. But this time, she didn't fight it.
