Chapter 2: Shadows of the Past
Episode 2: A Glimpse Into Eternity
Naruto sat motionless on the Hokage Monument as the village below buzzed with life. The wind whispered through his spiky blonde hair, carrying faint echoes of a name that wasn't his but felt like it should be. His thoughts were an endless loop of confusion and curiosity. Who was the person in his dreams? Why did the movements during training feel so natural, as if they'd been ingrained in him for years?
He sighed, leaning back against the stone carving of the Fourth Hokage's face. "Why me? Can't I just have one normal day?"
Suddenly, his stomach growled loudly, breaking the tension. Naruto chuckled, his grin returning for a fleeting moment. "Guess even mysteries can't beat ramen."
He jumped to his feet and made his way toward Ichiraku Ramen. Despite the oddity of the morning, the thought of food was comforting. As he walked through the bustling streets, villagers gave him the usual mix of wary glances and whispers. He ignored them, as he always did, but today, something gnawed at him.
Why do they look at me like that?
The question wasn't new, but it was louder now, almost demanding an answer.
A Strange Encounter
Reaching Ichiraku, Naruto was greeted warmly by Teuchi and Ayame. "Naruto! Your usual?" Teuchi asked, already pulling out noodles.
"Yeah! Make it two bowls," Naruto replied, slapping a few coins on the counter.
As he waited, a chill ran down his spine. Turning, he saw a man cloaked in black standing across the street. The man's face was obscured by a hood, but his piercing gaze seemed locked onto Naruto.
"Hey, old man," Naruto said, leaning over the counter. "Do you see that guy over there?"
Teuchi glanced up but shook his head. "What guy? You feeling alright, Naruto?"
Naruto frowned and turned back, only to find the man gone. His heart raced. Was he imagining things?
The bowls of ramen arrived, momentarily distracting him. He dug in, savoring the warmth and flavor, but the unease lingered.
As he finished his meal, he felt it again—that heavy air from the morning. His vision blurred for a moment, and when it cleared, the world seemed... different. The colors were muted, the sounds distant.
"Oi, Naruto! You okay?" Ayame asked, her voice distorted.
Naruto blinked and shook his head. "Y-yeah, just tired." He quickly paid and left, eager to get back to the safety of his apartment.
Dreams or Memories?
That night, sleep came reluctantly. When it did, it brought vivid images that felt too real to be dreams.
Naruto found himself standing in a vast battlefield. The sky was a swirling mass of red and black, and the ground was littered with the remnants of a great war—shattered weapons, crumbled walls, and countless bodies.
In the distance, he saw a figure clad in ancient armor, standing tall against an army. The figure wielded a massive weapon, its blade glowing with a golden light that seemed to push back the darkness.
Naruto felt himself drawn to the scene, his feet moving on their own. As he approached, the figure turned to face him, and Naruto gasped. The man's face was his own—older, scarred, and hardened by countless battles.
"You've forgotten, haven't you?" the man said, his voice echoing as if coming from all directions.
"Forgotten what?" Naruto asked, his voice trembling.
"Who you are. Who you were. And who you must become."
Before Naruto could respond, the scene shattered like glass, and he woke up in a cold sweat.
The Seal Awakens
Naruto's hand shot to his chest, where the faint glow of the seal pulsed beneath his shirt. It wasn't burning like before, but it was warm, as if alive. He stumbled to the bathroom and splashed water on his face, trying to shake the lingering fear.
Staring at his reflection, he whispered, "Who am I?"
The seal flickered, and for a moment, he saw something in the mirror—his own eyes, but they were older and filled with an otherworldly glow. A voice echoed in his mind again.
"Find the truth, or it will find you."
The Next Morning
Naruto's exhaustion was evident as he arrived at the academy. His classmates noticed, but most chose to ignore him as usual. Only Sakura seemed to care enough to comment.
"Geez, Naruto, you look worse than usual. Did you stay up all night eating ramen again?"
Naruto forced a laugh. "Yeah, something like that."
Iruka entered the room, silencing the chatter. "Alright, class, today we'll be working on chakra control. Meet me at the training grounds in ten minutes."
Naruto groaned. Training was the last thing he wanted, but as the class headed out, he couldn't shake the feeling that something important was about to happen.
An Unusual Display
At the training grounds, Iruka demonstrated tree-climbing using chakra, a technique most of the class struggled with. Naruto, as expected, failed his first few attempts, but something clicked after a while.
The seal on his chest warmed again, and suddenly, he felt a surge of energy. Without realizing it, he ran up the tree effortlessly, reaching the top in seconds.
The class gasped, and Iruka stared in disbelief.
"How did you…?" Iruka began, but Naruto shrugged, equally confused.
Sasuke narrowed his eyes. "What's going on with you, dobe?"
"I don't know," Naruto admitted, genuinely puzzled.
But deep down, he felt something stirring—a power that wasn't his but felt like it belonged.
The Watcher Returns
Later that evening, as Naruto walked home, he sensed someone following him. He turned a corner and stopped, pretending to tie his shoe. When the footsteps grew closer, he spun around.
"Who are you?" he demanded, glaring at the cloaked figure from earlier.
The man stepped forward, his face still hidden. "You've started to remember."
Naruto's heart raced. "What do you mean? Remember what?"
"All will be revealed in time," the man said cryptically. "For now, be cautious. Others are watching you, and not all of them wish you well."
Before Naruto could ask more, the man vanished into the shadows, leaving only a faint trace of chakra in the air.
A New Resolve
Naruto stood there for a long moment, his fists clenched. He didn't understand what was happening, but one thing was clear—he couldn't ignore it.
"I don't know who I was," he said quietly, "but I'll find out. And whatever's coming, I'll face it head-on."
As he walked home under the moonlit sky, the seal on his chest pulsed once more, its glow a reminder that his journey had only just begun.
